West African Dwarf Goat Response To Supplementary Feeding In Cameroon, E. Tedonkeng Pamo, B. Boukila, F. Tendonkeng, J. R. Kana Apr 2023

West African Dwarf Goat Response To Supplementary Feeding In Cameroon, E. Tedonkeng Pamo, B. Boukila, F. Tendonkeng, J. R. Kana

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The production of the West African Dwarf goat (WADG) in Cameroon is very low, because of lack of proper nutrition. Nitrogen content is generally very low and fibre content is high, both in the grass and the crop residues which form the basis of their diet particularly during the dry season. Supplementation of these roughages is a promising way of alleviating nutrient deficiencies. Different types of supplementary feeding have been advocated to boost goat production (Leng, 2003), of which supplementary feeding with leguminous tree leaves is of high merit. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the effects of supplementary …

Urea Molasses Multi-Nutrient Block (Ummb) As A Feed Supplement: Effect On Reducing Liveweight Losses In Yaks During The Cold Season Of Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, China, R. J. Long, S. K. Dong, X. H. Wei, J. P. Wu

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Urea molasses multi-nutrient block (UMMB) has been widely used as a feed supplement to balance nutrition of ruminants fed low-quality forage-based diets in tropical and sub-tropical areas. This study was carried out to determine the effects of UMMB in reducing liveweight loss of both yak cows and calves grazing on low-quality pastures during winter on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, China.

New Advance In Forage Production And Dairy Industry In China, Zhiqiang Q. Li, J. G. Han Apr 2023

New Advance In Forage Production And Dairy Industry In China, Zhiqiang Q. Li, J. G. Han

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

There were 6.9 million dairy cows in China in 2002 with milk yield of 13 million t. These values were 21.4 and 26.7% higher respectively than in 2001. Milk yield per cow was 1891 kg, 4.4 % higher than in the previous year, but still one third lower than the world average. Milk fat and protein contents were about 3.2 and 3.0 % respectively, a little below the world average. Milk consumption was 10.9 kg per person, much lower than the world average (97.6 kg) So, although great changes have taken place in dairy breeding, forage production and disease control, …

Productivity Of Sahiwal And Friesian-Sahiwal Crossbreds In Marginal Grasslands Of Kenya, W. B. Muhuyi, F. B. Lukibisi, S. N. Ole Sinkeet Apr 2023

Productivity Of Sahiwal And Friesian-Sahiwal Crossbreds In Marginal Grasslands Of Kenya, W. B. Muhuyi, F. B. Lukibisi, S. N. Ole Sinkeet

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Dual-purpose cattle can be used to exploit the production potential of semi-arid grasslands of Kenya for milk and meat production. Although the Sahiwal is adapted to these grasslands, its productivity is low. In order to increase milk and meat productivity, the Sahiwal has been crossed with the Friesian to produce Friesian-Sahiwal crossbreds (McDowell et al., 1996) adapted to the tropical environment. The objective of this study was to evaluate the productivity of Sahiwal and Friesian-Sahiwal crossbreds.

The Effects Of A High Grass Input Feeding System Compared To High Concentrate Input Feeding System Offered To Spring Calving Dairy Cows In Early Lactation, E. Kennedy, M. O'Donovan, J. P. Murphy, F. P. O'Mara, L. Delaby Apr 2023

The Effects Of A High Grass Input Feeding System Compared To High Concentrate Input Feeding System Offered To Spring Calving Dairy Cows In Early Lactation, E. Kennedy, M. O'Donovan, J. P. Murphy, F. P. O'Mara, L. Delaby

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Grazed grass is the cheapest feed available on Irish dairy farms. The inclusion of grass in the diet of the spring-calving dairy cow in early lactation is recommended. Previous studies focused on introducing grazed herbage into the cows diet in early spring in conjunction with grass silage and concentrate, and compared this to cows fed indoors. The objective of this study was to compare the milk production and feed budget of two contrasting early lactation feeding regimes. One regime was based on a high herbage inclusion with a low concentrate level (HG), while the other was based on a high …

A Comparison Of A Full Time Grazing And A Partial Storage Feeding System, For Dairy Cows, C. P. Ferris, D. C. Patterson Apr 2023

A Comparison Of A Full Time Grazing And A Partial Storage Feeding System, For Dairy Cows, C. P. Ferris, D. C. Patterson

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Partial storage feeding has been adopted by a number of Northern Ireland dairy farmers in recent years. This is due in part to increasing cow numbers, and as such, insufficient pasture close to the milking parlour to permit full time grazing. Partial storage feeding may also have environmental benefits, as well as reducing labour requirements associated with 'droving' and pasture management. In view of this, a study was undertaken to examine animal performance with either a full-time grazing, or a partial storage feeding regime.

Effect Of A Summer Period At Pasture On The Performance Of Young Bulls Offered Concentrates Ad Libitum, R. J. Fallon, M. G. Keane Apr 2023

Effect Of A Summer Period At Pasture On The Performance Of Young Bulls Offered Concentrates Ad Libitum, R. J. Fallon, M. G. Keane

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Holstein bull calves can produce a 250 kg carcass at 11 to 12 months of age on indoor feeding of ad libitum concentrates. An outdoor period at pasture would reduce housing costs. Two experiments were undertaken to determine the effect of an outdoor period at pasture on concentrate intake, liveweight gain and selected carcass traits of Holstein young bulls.

Animal Unit Of Sheep (Zel Breed) Grazing In Mazandaran Grasslands In Iran, Hossein Arzani, Reza Erfanzadeh, S. Farazmand

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Animal unit equivalents (AUEs), provide a means of summarising grazing capacity, calculating stocking rates and other stocking variables (Scarnecchia, 1990). Animal units (AU) are often defined in relation to the dominant animal type in an area In Iran there are 27 sheep breeds which are classified into three main body size classes, namely: small, medium and large. The objective of this experiment was to define animal units, animal and forage requirements for sheep grazing in Mozandaran grasslands.

Mixed Fattening Of Steers And Lambs On Improved Grasslands In Uruguay: I. Pasture Performance, D. F. Risso, Fabio Montossi, E. J. Berretta, R. Cuadro, I. De Barbieri, R. San Julián, A. Dighiero, A. Zarza Apr 2023

Mixed Fattening Of Steers And Lambs On Improved Grasslands In Uruguay: I. Pasture Performance, D. F. Risso, Fabio Montossi, E. J. Berretta, R. Cuadro, I. De Barbieri, R. San Julián, A. Dighiero, A. Zarza

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The use of P fertilisers together with legume broadcasting is a low cost and high impact technology for improving native grassland (Risso et al., 2001). Its use is increasing in Uruguay, although not for mixed grazing, even though this management is a common practice on native grasslands. Good pasture response may occur under mixed grazing when it is adequately managed (Nolan & Connolly, 1989). The following trials characterise pasture response with such management, in Uruguayan conditions.

Mixed Fattening Of Steers And Lambs On Improved Grasslands In Uruguay: Ii. Animal Performance And Productivity, D. F. Risso, Fabio Montossi, E. J. Berretta, R. Cuadro, I. De Barbieri, R. San Julián, A. Dighiero, A. Zarza Apr 2023

Mixed Fattening Of Steers And Lambs On Improved Grasslands In Uruguay: Ii. Animal Performance And Productivity, D. F. Risso, Fabio Montossi, E. J. Berretta, R. Cuadro, I. De Barbieri, R. San Julián, A. Dighiero, A. Zarza

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

In cow-calf operations in Uruguay, mixed cattle and sheep grazing on rangelands is predominant, while fattening is a specialised process. Within certain limits of the lamb/steer ratio and stocking rate, a complementary grazing effect occurs under mixed grazing, improving net results (Nolan & Connolly, 1977; Risso et al., 2002). These trials characterise animal performance under such management.

Feed evaluation was an emphasis of research from the foundation of the "Oskar-Kellner-Institute of Animal Nutrition" in 1953 at Rostock by Prof. Kurt Nehring. The aim of the research work was the elaboration of a feed evaluation system containing reference numbers of feed values and requirements of farm animals. The approach and the present system are outlined in this paper.

Constraints On Dairy Cattle Production From Locally Available Forages In Bangladesh, M. A. S. Khan Apr 2023

Constraints On Dairy Cattle Production From Locally Available Forages In Bangladesh, M. A. S. Khan

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The productivity of milk producing animals in Bangladesh is low because of low individual yield and poor fertility. The reasons for the low productivity are complex but, in order of priority, appear to be (a) the imbalanced nature of the nutrients that arise from the digestion of the forage resources, (b) the incidence of disease/parasitism, and (c) the often harsh climatic circumstances. Thus, the purpose of this study was to find out the practical constraints on dairy cattle production from locally available forages under small holding village conditions of Bangladesh.

Effects Of Supplementary Concentrate Level And Separate Or Mixed Feeding Of Grass Silage And Concentrates On Rumen Fluid Composition In Steers, J. Caplis, M. G. Keane, F. P. O'Mara Apr 2023

Effects Of Supplementary Concentrate Level And Separate Or Mixed Feeding Of Grass Silage And Concentrates On Rumen Fluid Composition In Steers, J. Caplis, M. G. Keane, F. P. O'Mara

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The effects of dietary concentrate level and method of feeding (separate or mixed) on performance and carcass traits of steers may be mediated through changes in rumen fluid composition. The objectives of this study were to determine the effects on rumen fluid composition of (1) supplementary concentrate level with grass silage, and (2) separate or mixed feeding of silage and concentrates,

Body Temperature In Free-Roaming Beef Cattle, T. L. Mader, S. L. Colgan Apr 2023

Body Temperature In Free-Roaming Beef Cattle, T. L. Mader, S. L. Colgan

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Body temperature (BT) measurements are traditionally used in diagnosing sick animals, but may also be used as an indicator of stress or activity. Based on results of metabolism studies, Mader et al. (1999) reported that BT can vary as much as 0.9oC and can depend on metabolisable energy (ME) of the diet consumed. Acceptable measures of BT can be obtained from the rectum, vagina, or ear canal. Technologies are also being developed for continuously monitoring BT via radio-telemetry. The objectives of this study were to determine the effect of high concentrate (low fibre) versus high fibre diets on …

Characterizing A Vertebrate Microsite In The Late Cretaceous Hell Creek Formation, Anna L. Luessman Apr 2023

Characterizing A Vertebrate Microsite In The Late Cretaceous Hell Creek Formation, Anna L. Luessman

Research & Creative Achievement Day

The Late Cretaceous Hell Creek Formation, located in Eastern Montana and parts of North and South Dakota, represents a tidally-influenced fluvial environment that was home to a thriving ecosystem 66 million years ago. Today the formation is made of mudstones and sandstones that contain many vertebrate fossil microsites. Microsites are concentrations of fossilized vertebrate bones and teeth ranging in size from fractions of a millimeter to several centimeters. These sites frequently contain many different species of animals and plants, allowing us to paint a picture of what that environment was like in the Late Cretaceous Period. For this study, I …

Development And Evaluation Of Pennisetum Purpureum Mutants Through Irradiation With 60Co, R. S. Herrera, M. García, R. Tuero, A. M. Cruz, A. Romero, N. Fraga Apr 2023

Development And Evaluation Of Pennisetum Purpureum Mutants Through Irradiation With 60Co, R. S. Herrera, M. García, R. Tuero, A. M. Cruz, A. Romero, N. Fraga

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The development of plant mutants is a commonly used procedure nowadays. One way of obtaining mutant plants has been seed irradiation with gamma rays. As these studies are not common in tropical pasture species (Micke et al., 1993, Herrera, 2001), the objective of this study was the development and evaluation of Pennisetum purpureum mutants through irradiation with 60Co.

Agronomic Characteristics Of Novi Sad Winter Vetch Cultivars, V. Mihailović, A. Mikić, B. Ćupina, S. Vasiljević, D. Milić

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Genus Vicia. contains important annual food and forage species such as field bean, V. faba., narbon vetch, V. narbonensis, and common vetch, V. sativa (Maxted, 1995), while Hungarian V. pannonica Crantz and hairy vetch V. villosa also play an important role in the Balkans. Winter vetches are excellent forage catch crops useful for sustainable agriculture and organic farming (Ċupina et al., 2004). Our study was aimed at determining the agronomic characteristics of the winter vetch cultivars developed in Novi Sad, assessing thus their ability for successful growing in the prevailing conditions of Serbia and Montenegro.

New Pigeon Pea (Cajanus Cajan) Hybrids With Desirable Forage Traits, P. B. Alcantara, J. A. Usberti Jr., C. A. Colombo, V. B. G. Alcantara, R. Usberti, M. A. C. Lucena, M. Harris Apr 2023

New Pigeon Pea (Cajanus Cajan) Hybrids With Desirable Forage Traits, P. B. Alcantara, J. A. Usberti Jr., C. A. Colombo, V. B. G. Alcantara, R. Usberti, M. A. C. Lucena, M. Harris

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Pigeon pea is a tropical forage legume usually sown in mixed pastures with tropical forage grasses. Most of the available cultivars shows erect and tall plants with poor tillering potential, breakable thick stems, low leaf/stem ratios (fresh/dry matter) and low persistence under animal grazing. It shows a high dry matter production, due to low leaf/stem ratios (Barnes & Addo, 1997). Pigeon pea shows good crude protein levels/dry matter (ranging from 14-23%) and regular in vitro digestibility indexes (52-58%) (Karachi & Matata, 1996); animal consumption is affected by high tannin levels of young leaves. Being a self-pollinated species, the variability for …

Development Of High-Yielding And Early-Maturing Korean Hairy Vetch, C. N. Shin, K. H. Ko Apr 2023

Development Of High-Yielding And Early-Maturing Korean Hairy Vetch, C. N. Shin, K. H. Ko

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

There are a number of forage cultivars recommended by the government, but only a few winter-spring legumes are available for the farmers in Korea. Hairy vetch has superior winter hardiness and produces high dry matter (DM) yield compared with crimson clover, Persian clover, rose clover, common vetch and Chinese milk vetch in Korea. However, under a double cropping forage production system an early maturing vetch cultivar was more productive than a late maturing one (Shin et al., 2000). The objective of this research was to develop a high yielding and early flowering new hairy vetch cultivar derived from an …

Seasonal Variation Of Tannin Content On Pigeon Pea (Cajanus Cajan (L.) Millsp) Plants, Rodolfo Godoy, P. M. Santos, L. A. R. Batista Apr 2023

Seasonal Variation Of Tannin Content On Pigeon Pea (Cajanus Cajan (L.) Millsp) Plants, Rodolfo Godoy, P. M. Santos, L. A. R. Batista

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Tannins reduce forage digestibility and palatability by reacting with proteins (Makkar, 1989) and due to that, tannin content is considered to be an important characteristic of leguminous crops and it has been used as a selection criterion on pigeon-pea improvement programs (Godoy et al., 1994). In Southeastern Brazil, pigeon pea is less consumed by bovines in the rainy season (October through March) than in the dry season (from April on), when flowering occurs. Alencar et al. (1991) found very little consumption by Canchim cows during the rainy season, and Lourenço et al. (1984) recommend pigeon-pea for feeding bovines in …

Quantifying The Variation In Protein Content In White Clover (Trifolium Repens L.), A. H. Marshall, E. Sizer, A. Kingston-Smith, A. Williams, M. T. Abberton Apr 2023

Quantifying The Variation In Protein Content In White Clover (Trifolium Repens L.), A. H. Marshall, E. Sizer, A. Kingston-Smith, A. Williams, M. T. Abberton

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

White clover (Trifolium repens L.) is the main legume in temperate pastures. It has relatively low levels of water-soluble carbohydrate but produces forage of high quality with a high crude protein (CP) content and dry-matter digestibility (Beever, 1993). Some studies have suggested that the forage quality of white clover can be problematic because its high CP content may contribute to inefficient use of nitrogen in the rumen and exacerbate diffuse pollution via excreta (Waghorn & Caradus, 1994). The development of white clover germplasm with lower CP content would potentially benefit forage production and grassland management. A study was carried …

New Approaches To Clover Breeding, M. T. Abberton, T. A. Williams, T. P. T. Michaelson-Yeates, A. H. Marshall, C. Jones, E. Sizer-Coverdale, R. P. Collins Apr 2023

New Approaches To Clover Breeding, M. T. Abberton, T. A. Williams, T. P. T. Michaelson-Yeates, A. H. Marshall, C. Jones, E. Sizer-Coverdale, R. P. Collins

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

White clover (Trifolium repens L.) and red clover (T. pratense) are the major forage legumes of temperate pastures. Breeding efforts have focused on overcoming the constraints to productivity and reliability in this species and thereby optimising their contribution to mixed swards. In recent years there has been an increased emphasis on livestock production and the efficient utilisation of forage material in the rumen. In this paper we report on a shift in the aims of forage legume breeding at IGER, building on a strong agronomic platform but giving greater consideration to the environmental footprint of our varieties …

Breeding White Clover With Improved Tolerance Of Nitrogen Fertiliser, T. A. Williams, M. T. Abberton, P. Olyott Apr 2023

Breeding White Clover With Improved Tolerance Of Nitrogen Fertiliser, T. A. Williams, M. T. Abberton, P. Olyott

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

White clover (Trifolium repens L.) is often considered a forage legume with a primary use in 'low input/ low output' systems. One facet of this is the perception that the persistency of this species is poor when Nitrogen (N) fertiliser is applied. However, new varieties of white clover are able to play a significant role in highly productive systems (Williams et al., 2000) and show consistent yields over ten years at a range of applied N levels (Williams et al., 2003). Germplasm improvement for nitrogen tolerance has been carried out with the aim of not only allowing white …

Evaluation Of Lucerne Cultivars For Dry Matter And Seed Production In Latvia, S. Rancane, M. Sparnina Apr 2023

Evaluation Of Lucerne Cultivars For Dry Matter And Seed Production In Latvia, S. Rancane, M. Sparnina

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Lucerne is highly productivity and has a high quality. Nevertheless, lucerne growing in Latvia is limited, because of a large area of acid soils (pHKCl<5.8) as well as low and unstable seed yields (Berzins, 2002). In recent years lucerne has taken a more important place in forage production in Latvia, because it is a fast growing crop and in good years gives 3-4 harvests per season. It is important to determine which cultivars of lucerne are more productive and give good seed yields every year in Latvia (Luksa, 2002).

Genetic Variability In Different Lucerne (Medicago Sativa) Genotypes, V. Mikić, J. Radović, Z. Lugić, D. Lazarević Apr 2023

Genetic Variability In Different Lucerne (Medicago Sativa) Genotypes, V. Mikić, J. Radović, Z. Lugić, D. Lazarević

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

One of the basic goals of modern lucerne breeding programmes is creation of new cultivars with a great potential for high quality and stable yields of both forage and hay (Riday & Brummer, 2002). Such cultivars meet increased needs of animal husbandry and must contribute to diverse farming systems (Luki , 2000). Our trial was aimed at determining genetic variability of yield components in 7 lucerne genotypes, as well as at evaluation of their breeding potential as gene donors to new lucerne cultivars

The Genetic Charactaristic Of Salt Tolerance At The Stage Of Seed Germination In Lucerne, H. Zhou, Q. Yang Apr 2023

The Genetic Charactaristic Of Salt Tolerance At The Stage Of Seed Germination In Lucerne, H. Zhou, Q. Yang

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Superweak luminescence exists in all animal and plants; it shows important genetic information. We report the relationship between superweak luminescence and genetic characteristics to salt resistant in lucerne (Medicago sativa). The method can quickly and exactly evaluate the salt-resistance of plants.

Molecular Clone Of The Na+/H+ Antiporter Gene Atnhx1 And Study Of Transgenic Salt Tolerant Lucerne, Q. Yang, H. Zhou, Y. N. Tongquan Apr 2023

Molecular Clone Of The Na+/H+ Antiporter Gene Atnhx1 And Study Of Transgenic Salt Tolerant Lucerne, Q. Yang, H. Zhou, Y. N. Tongquan

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Lucerne (Medicago sativa) with its good quality and ease of cultivation occupies an important position in animal feeding. Salinity is a major constraint of crop productivity, because it reduces yield and limits expansion of agriculture. Na+ /H+ antiporter catalyses the counter transport of Na+ and H+ across membranes. Vacuolar Na+ /H+ antiporter plays an important role in developing salt-tolerance of plants. Therefore, we could use the gene involved in this mechanism to modify salt tolerance of lucerne.

Leaves Of High Yielding Perennial Ryegrass Contain Less Aggregated Rubisco Than S23, A. Kingston-Smith, P. W. Wilkins Apr 2023

Leaves Of High Yielding Perennial Ryegrass Contain Less Aggregated Rubisco Than S23, A. Kingston-Smith, P. W. Wilkins

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Breeding diploid perennial ryegrass for improved dry matter yield under nitrogen-limiting conditions has reduced the nitrogen (N) concentration of the herbage (Wilkins et al., 2003). Reduced N concentration in the ruminant diet is one potential way to reduce losses of N to the environment by reducing the amount of N that animals excrete. The underlying physiological basis of this increased N-use efficiency in ryegrass was investigated.

Genetic Variability Between Adapted Populations Of Annual Ryegrass (Lolium Multiflorum Lam) In Argentina, A. Andrés, B. S. Rosso, J. De Battista, M. Acuña Apr 2023

Genetic Variability Between Adapted Populations Of Annual Ryegrass (Lolium Multiflorum Lam) In Argentina, A. Andrés, B. S. Rosso, J. De Battista, M. Acuña

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) is one of the most important annual grasses used in Argentina because it adapts better to the intensive animal system of the Humid Pampas than other annual forage grass. Although much research has been done to study its productive potential and management technologies, little work has focused on breeding and selection. There is ample evidence that genetic variability occurs within grass species (Snaydon, 1987; Andrés and Barufaldi, 1997) both in morphology and physiology. As a result the variation of attributes related with yield potential, quality and adaptation to different management systems, is often used …

Minimising Bloat Through Development Of White Clover (T. Repens) With High Levels Of Condensed Tannins, M. T. O’Donoghue, C. Spillane, E. Guiney Apr 2023

Minimising Bloat Through Development Of White Clover (T. Repens) With High Levels Of Condensed Tannins, M. T. O’Donoghue, C. Spillane, E. Guiney

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

White clover constitutes a low percentage of the overall sward content in Irish pastureland despite EU directives limiting the use of nitrogenous fertilizers. This is mainly due to the tendency of large amounts of white clover to cause bloat. Bloat is a potentially fatal build up of proteinaceous foam in the guts of ruminants. Some lesser cultivated legumes such as Lotus species contain condensed tannins (CT) that decrease the incidence of bloated animals. The project’s objective is to reduce the risk of bloat by generating white clover cultivars with high CT content. We are investigating whether expression of the ANTHOCYANIN …
