The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

in this issue. . .

THIS is a historic month, and the editors of THE MIDWEST QUARTERLY have perforce taken this fact into account in selecting the material appearing in this issue. The presidential elections are behind us, and a new national administration will be inaugurated on the twentieth of this month. On the twenty-ninth, Kansans will observe the centennial of statehood and inaugurate a year of celebrations of all sorts for this important midwest milestone. In a sense, this month of January, 1961, is a meeting point for the Old Frontier of the Kansas past and the New Frontiers …

The Angle

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"It is likely that more Americans have seen the name of Francoise Sagan in a gossip column than on a title page. Mlle Sagan's colorful personal life has caught the public fancy, and it is supposed that the characters in her novels are similar to her public image, that is, that they are young and disenchanted, indifferent or hostile to conventionality."

The editors have taken into account several incontestable facts in selecting these discussions for publication. This issue appears a short month before the American presidential election. The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

in this issue. . .

WITH this number, THE MIDWEST QUARTERLY rounds out Volume I and in effect reaches a kind of maturity. Like the April issue, this fourth number moves our horizons further out by broadening the scope of material published. Once more the editors are able to offer a fairly wide variety of intellectual fare for our discerning readers. And, manuscripts already in hand indicate, …

Periods Of Plight And Persecution, Norma M. Nixon

Student Scholarship

This honors project, completed by Norma M. Nixon between 1959 and 1960, serves as a comprehensive study of the personal essay as a literary form. The work is divided into two distinct components: a historical and analytical review of prominent essayists from the seventeenth through the twentieth centuries, and a collection of original personal essays written by the author to demonstrate the insights gained through her research. The analytical portion involves the study of various masters of the craft, including Michel de Montaigne, Francis Bacon, John Earle, Joseph Addison, and Samuel Johnson, as well as more modern figures like Mark …
