THE GRATIFYING RECEPTION our more discerning readers gave the first two articles in our October number ( "Alternative to Futility" and "The Case of Harold Rugg") encouraged the editors to select another discussion of the problems of higher education in America for inclusion in this issue. An increasingly broad variety of manuscripts coming our way has made possible the selection of four other articles within the general area of twentieth century American life and letters, with particular emphasis on letters. From the tidal wave of verse contributions which threatened for a time to inundate us …

God, Man And The Devil In The Talent Scout, Frank Salamone
The Angle
In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

Following a semantic approach, the Atlantic reviewer went on …

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought
in this issue. . .
AS THE MIDWEST QUARTERLY begins its third year of publication, the editors present an issue containing articles on our customarily wide variety of subjects. In this issue, however, we present our first discussions of American education. In view of the fact that this journal is the successor to The Educational Leader published by this college for over twenty years, it may seem a little strange that it has taken us so long to arrive at this point. From its inception, it has been our aim to offer a broad selection of articles on various subjects of contemporary significance. Throughout our …

The "first hundred days" of the Kennedy Administration are about to become history, and there are other activities on the American and the midwestern scenes which are essentially political in nature and/ or origin. The Centennial of Kansas statehood has officially begun, and the Centennial of the American Civil War likewise. More importantly, rank-and-file Americans seem to be taking more interest in political activities and problems than is their usual wont, although this may be only a seasonal thing, what with state legislatures in session as …
