MAXINE SHEETS-JOHNSTONE uses a study of hunting activities to inform a new view of humans as more than sensory receptors dangling from the intelligent brain. With a doctorate in dance and study toward a second doctorate in zoology, Sheets-Johnstone has written two books on dance and has published numerous articles on philosophical anthropology in journals devoted to science, philosophy, the humanities, and the arts. She is presently gathering material for a book on the paleonanthropological hermeneutics of the body. She has taught at U.C.L.A., in the S.U.N.Y. system, at the University of Waterloo in Canada, …

J.D. Salinger's Code Hero: The Moral Character In An Immoral World, Rebecca Hendrick Aug 1986

J.D. Salinger's Code Hero: The Moral Character In An Immoral World, Rebecca Hendrick

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

J.D. Salinger's fiction can be approached by looking at the various elements of fiction, but his largest statement rests in the ways that his characters interac within his world. This interaction leads to a code of behavior that the heroes follow, and can be used to determine the heroic character within a particular piece of fiction, much as the Hemingway code developed by Carlos Baker identified the characteristics of the Hemingway hero, Salinger's heroes are all aware of the phony which is in the world around them. They see this phoniness as something undesirable within the world, yet they must …

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

in this issue. . .

That James Joyce was concerned that his audience understood Bloom and Stephen were going about lives matched with Ulysses and Telemachus has become clear, but his purpose in doing so is the subject of WILLIAM O'NEILL. Author of short stories, reviews, and an article on Yeats in this journal, O'Neill teaches English at the University of Wisconsin-Stout.

A. CARL BREDAHL develops Sherwood Anderson's alternative to the novel form, a "divided narrative," by examining Winesburg, Ohio. With numerous publications on writers as diverse as Charles Brockden Brown, Herman Melville, Harold Frederic, John Steinbeck, Thomas Wolfe, and …

Matoaka, June Nan Cooper Jul 1986

Matoaka, June Nan Cooper

Institute for the Humanities Theses

"Matoaka" is the first draft and partial scoring of an original music/play about the Powhatan Indians of Tidewater, Virginia. This music/play is actually the second in a projected series of three about the Powhatan Indians and the Native American world view. "Matoaka" is staged from a Powhatan perspective on the events surrounding the English settlement of Jamestowne in the year 1607. As much of the Powhatan culture has been destroyed, the Powhatan world view is reconstructed and interpreted from current and historical readings about Native Americans. The introduction includes a discussion of the author's creative process in the writing of …
