They Lie Now In Small Packets Upon The Desk, A Position Hardly..., Dan Mcgurk

The Angle

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"They lie now in small packets upon the desk, a position hardly appropriate for what they contain. In the clutter and waste that surround them they appear to be almost another pile of insignificant odds and ends. Occasionally will be extracted from this wasteland and examined but these brief glances hardly do justice to the memories they evoke."

The Passion Of Estelle Jordan, Ernest Hebert Jan 1987

The Passion Of Estelle Jordan, Ernest Hebert

Dartmouth Scholarship

Sometimes the characters in Ernest Hebert's Darby Chronicles hew close to real life. When the author was a college student pulling shifts part time at a hospital laundry, he worked alongside a woman in her fifties--unadorned, sweet-natured, and with long gray-black hair that was her pride. Nights, Hebert frequented the beer bar in Keene, New Hampshire, where he encountered a sassy, self-empowered, forty-something bleached blonde who could bamboozle any man she met. Borrowing qualities from these women, Hebert would shape one of his most memorable characters: Estelle, the "witch" of the Jordan clan.

A major character in earlier Darby novels …

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

in this issue. . .

Egalitarianism begets totalitarianism and antisemitism. That is the provocative thesis of RONALD LARSON. Professor of Social Science at Wytheville Community College in Virginia and playwright, Larson has studied and written about modem narcissism in a number of different forums.

BETTY R. McGRAW and RODNEY O. FOX link literature and science to explore the modem view of life's basic components as lacking the certainty and unity so apparent to earlier generations of philosophers, scientists, and writers, and they end with a mention of new topics for consideration. McGraw is Associate Professor of French and Fox is …

Figure Eight : A Collection Of Short Stories, Martha Kilgore Rice Jan 1987

Figure Eight : A Collection Of Short Stories, Martha Kilgore Rice

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Most of the eight stories in this collection are about individuals who are alienated. They are unable or unwilling to break through the barriers that separate them from others. The stories are contemporary; the settings are urban/suburban. The past plays an important part in defining and limiting the present, and fantasy sometimes replaces reality as an option for dealing with the loneliness of isolation. Direct confrontation is another option. Desire for power and the need for assertiveness are important elements in the action of the stories. By contrast, retreat into submission may become the sad alternative.

The voices change with …

The Technical Achievement Of C. Rossetti In Goblin Market And Other Poems, Jay D. Fisk Jan 1987

The Technical Achievement Of C. Rossetti In Goblin Market And Other Poems, Jay D. Fisk

Masters Theses

During Christina Rossetti's lifetime (1830-1894), and for some fifty years after her death, critical attention focused on her life, more specifically on how that life affected her poetry. Critics tried to show how her Italian ancestors, artistic brothers, spiritual mother and sister, and her many illnesses influenced her works. Other than these basic facts, little else was known.

Later, psychological critics found much sexual symbolism in the "repressed" poet's works. "Goblin Market," with its tale of strange little goblin men seducing innocent maids with their fruits seemed particularly well-suited to a Freudian approach. This poem received so much attention that …
