This 1989 edition includes winners of the T. E. Ferguson writing Contest, two honorable mentions, and a number of other entries that we felt deserved to be published. I would like to give special thanks to all the judges of the Ferguson Writing Contest who helped make this publication possible, and especially to Dr. Patricia Russell, who one again proved to be an invaluable asset. Her dedication and love for the organization and all it stands for has made this one of the most successful years ever.

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
I wrote my first story in third grade. “Francine and the Head-Chopper Man” borrowed its plot from “Beauty and the Beast,” but my teacher didn’t seem to mind. In fact, she arranged for me to read the story to the fifth-grade class down the hall. After that first public reading, I was hooked. I knew at age seven I was going to be a writer.
When I discovered journalism in the ninth grade, I knew just what type of writing I was going to do. In junior high and high school, I was editor of the newspapers, and in college …

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
In the introduction to The World of the Short Story, Kay Boyle challenges the short story writer "to invest a brief sequence of events with reverberating human significance by means of style, selection and ordering of detail, and -- most important -- to present the whole action in such a way that it is at once a parable and a slice of life, at once symbolic and real, both a valid picture of some phase of experience, and a sudden illumination of one of the perennial moral and psychological paradoxes which lie at the heart of la condition humaine." …

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought
in this issue. . .
These are normal times, not crisis times, in the other-end-of-the-telescope view of MATTHEW MELKO, and we should value this age as such and use this insight to improve the lives of others and ourselves. A professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, and a pioneer in worldview studies, Melko's essay here summarizes thoughts which will shortly be given book-length treatment by Paragon. This is Melko's second article in The Midwest Quarterly.
JON ROPER discusses the ethical dimension of democracy as it passed from the Greeks to Americans …
