Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Spindrift Gazes is a collection of short stories that thematically relate to how human dignity is engendered and how that sense of dignity is challenged, undercut, and regained. These fictional constructions are particularly concerned with issues of transformation, how and why change takes place. Of particular emphasis is how differing kinds of human relationships are instrumental in the nature of those changes. Of fundamental concern is to give fictional form to human rights issues.

Unable to accept Christianity, as NANCY D. HARGROVE points out, Sylvia Plath twisted its imagery to fashion a negative more comfortable to her troubled condition. Author of Landscape as Symbol in the Poetry of T. S. Eliot and articles on writers such as Yeats and
Welty, Hargrove is the recipient of several awards for teaching excellence at Mississippi State University where she is one of seven University Distinguished Professors.

English Theses & Dissertations
Journalism is not a field in which facts must always be written black on white, opinion deleted. As a writer, largely of features, rather than what editors in my profession call "hard news," I particularly like writing the personal column.
In those 14 inches I can explore issues of the day, take a closer look at my life, family and neighbors, The looks are at some times more thoughtful than at others. Some topics are meant merely to entertain. Others to fuel discussion. All are meant to be gentle examinations of the truth, the tidbits of life that keep all …

Presently Associate Professor of English at Canisius College in Buffalo, New York, D'Amico has written extensively on English and Italian Renaissance literature, particularly on theater and Machiavelli.

Pet Rock, July A. Jolly
Pet Rock, July A. Jolly
English Theses & Dissertations
This book is an attempt to re-create the essence of what life was like for an American family living in Zambia during the early 197Os. While it must be acknowledged that Pet Rock is semi-autobiographical--after all, my family, like the Petersons, lived in Zambia, and I, like Carrie, was sent away to the United States for school--the events dramatized are nevertheless completely imaginary, as are the characters involved. Even Carrie, who grew directly out of my own emotional remembrance, is not really me. And yet, although it doesn't tell "what actually happened," Pet Rock allows the reader to experience what …
The Happy Accident, Robert Manning
The Happy Accident, Robert Manning
New England Journal of Public Policy
In "The Happy Accident," Robert Manning's delightful memoir of his early newspaper days in Binghamton, New York, we are brought back to an earlier and seemingly more innocent time when New England — and America — stood on the threshold of change. The moral of going home, it seems, is that as much changes, much never changes — something we should perhaps remember in these last feverish days of the nineteen eighties.
