Waste Land Or Promised Land: T.S. Eliot's The Idea Of A Christian Society, Amy Wallace Jul 1987

Waste Land Or Promised Land: T.S. Eliot's The Idea Of A Christian Society, Amy Wallace

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

In T. S. Eliot's The Idea of a Christian Society, the poet questions the nature of our society's foundations; he believes that Western culture is moving dangerously closer to the liberal and secular and that this shift could be disastrous. To facilitate this change in direction, Eliot stresses the importance of an educational system which takes a Christian perspective. Also important in his thinking is a Community of Christians, who would act as leaders, and the Christian community (encompassing most of the …

New England Journal of Public Policy

Vermont Revisited, William Jay Smith's sweet-bitter memoir of Pownal, Vermont, captures the political and social minutiae of a small, rural New England town in transition which continued to preoccupy itself in almost conspiratorial drama with its own parochial agendas, denying, even if not oblivious of, the changes at its doorstep. Yet Smith's observations of the machinations that were grist for the mill of the small-town intrigues are tinged with a sadness, with an awareness of an old order dying, of old values under siege, of a new order intruding itself — less private, more depriving if perhaps more equitable, and …

The Ranch, Cornell Juliano Jan 1987

The Ranch, Cornell Juliano

The Angle

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"The road was dirt and gravel. It dead-ended at the ranch where the two of us lived in the foothills of the Colorado Rockies. A blizzard that had rolled in from the mountains two days earlier was blowing like God's wrath. The road wouldn't be cleared anytime soon."
