Lester Dowdy's Carnival, Gillian M. Devereux Jul 2000

Lester Dowdy's Carnival, Gillian M. Devereux

English Theses & Dissertations

In this manuscript, I attempt to reveal what Don DeLillo has called "the world inside the world." The manuscript's title and structure explore the dichotomy between a thing's interior and its exterior. A carnival, on its surface, is a collection of amusements: rides, games, barkers, cotton candy, and the like. However, as the title poem suggests, the word carnival also represents a time for celebration, general merry-making, and, in its most archaic sense, the liturgical season just before Lent. Thus, one can view a carnival as an amusement, or as a prelude to sacrifice and penance, or as a …

Whatever Shines: Poems, Kathleen Mcgookey Jun 2000

Whatever Shines: Poems, Kathleen Mcgookey

Dissertations

The poems in my manuscript can be divided into two groups: poems in verse and prose poems. The majority are prose poems. Though I did not set out to write in the prose poem form, I’ve become more and more attracted to it, eventually seeking what Baudelaire sought when he wrote the poems in Le Spleen de Paris, a poetic prose "musical without rhythm or rhyme, supple enough and shocking enough to adapt itself to lyrical movements of the soul, undulations of the reverie, sudden leaps of conscience." Charles Simic believes prose poems contain a tension between the lyric impulse …

The following is the true account of one woman' s experience in a Franciscan convent during the 1950' s and 60's. It is a study of motivation-why a young high school graduate would leave behind everything to pursue a life of service and why, thirteen years later, she would return to the world.

The Long Road Home, Chuck Sullivan May 2000

The Long Road Home, Chuck Sullivan

Dissertations and Theses

The Long Road Home, a short prose epic, concerns the adventure and political coming-of-age of two sixteen-year-old boys, Dean and Blake. The boys hitchhike from their hometown of Pittsburgh to Greensboro, North Carolina in order to attend a march against the Ku Klux Klan. Dean and Blake are politically idealistic and naïve boys who learn a lot about the complexities of race relations in America on their adventure. The boys encounter a variety of people on their trip and in Greensboro, some of whom are hostile, friendly, indifferent, deceptive, generous, and downright strange.

When the day of the march against …

I Won't Say Heaven: Notes On An Outer Banks Village, Judith Depietro Mercier Apr 2000

I Won't Say Heaven: Notes On An Outer Banks Village, Judith Depietro Mercier

English Theses & Dissertations

I Won't Say Heaven: Notes on an Outer Banks Village is a work of narrative nonfiction that focuses on Duck, North Carolina, a rapidly changing village on the northern Outer Banks, and the people, both living and dead, who have had a stake in it. This collection includes profiles, oral history, personal essay, and reportage. It attempts to recreate the past, detail the present, and speculate on the future of this once sparsely populated neighborhood of risk takers--the seafarers, fishermen, and hunters who lived there with their families.

Virtually hidden until the early 1980s, Duck enjoyed several centuries of solitude …

Swenson Poetry Award Winners

May Swenson Poetry Award Volume 4, with foreward by Maxine Kumin. Although the poems in this collection are not narrative, they do present a narrative, gradually unspooling the tale of the poet's rebel aunt, who left the family "to marry a Chinaman" in the 1930s. It's an old story, full of poignancy, mystery, family pride, and doubt. When the aunt returns to die, the poet, now grown, discovers in herself the need to reclaim the connections that her family had severed. She travels to China several times—to learn. Gradually, through wide-eyed insightful poems, we see the poet rebuild with her …
