The Midas Of The Wabash: A Biography Of John Purdue, Robert C. Kriebel
The Midas Of The Wabash: A Biography Of John Purdue, Robert C. Kriebel
Purdue University Press Books
A biography of noted businessman John Purdue (1802-1876), whose donations of time and money led to the founding of Indiana's land grant university-Purdue University-in 1869. Purdue also contributed to economically important bridge, railroad, and cemetery construction, the existence of Lafayette Savings Bank and the Battle Ground Collegiate Institute, cattle farming, Lafayette's public school system, and countless other worthy enterprises. To date there has been no published full length study of Mr. Purdue's life and work beyond casual street-talk that portrayed Purdue as a difficult individual with whom to work. This biography incorporates research efforts by previous writers with facts gleaned …

English Theses & Dissertations
Twenty years ago I was drawn to Mexico by forces that seemed beyond my control. Seduced by the beneficent sun, the warm people, and a palpable, omnipresent magic, I set off not so much to discover the land as to find myself. It was there, among hard-living, licentious Mexicans and expatriates alike, that I came to discover lost inner worlds through the gateway of the senses.
Beyond the Sea of Cortes recounts my early adventures in the town of San Miguel de Allende as well as in Mexico City, Zihuatenejo, Oaxaca, and Guanajuato. It strives to tell the story of …
Losing Cameron, Kerry D. Kisa
Losing Cameron, Kerry D. Kisa
English Theses & Dissertations
In March of 1997, my sister, Fran, and I took our children to a photography studio in downtown Winston-Salem, N.C. I had my twin girls, who were eight weeks old at the time. Fran had Cameron, a grinning nine month old with curly red hair and startling green eyes. I'll never forget how Cameron looked that morning, giggling as he clapped his stubby fingers together for the photographer. I'll never forget the expression on my sisters' face as she watched Cameron with pride from the rear of the small, cluttered studio.
It would be a long time before I saw …

English Theses & Dissertations
I left Iran on July 4, 1975, returned the following year for a visit, not realizing that I would never return. The Islamic Revolution toppled the government of Mohammed Reza Shah Pahlavi in 1979, forcing most of the Iranian Jewish community to leave a country we had called home for over 2000 years.
Undoubtedly, the exile has allowed the Iranian Jews to sharpen our sense of pride and belonging to our heritage. Having lived on the fringes of often anti-Semitic populations, we had rarely believed in our own strength, rarely been allowed to study our history. In Iran, we tried …

The Owl Question, Faith Shearin
The Owl Question, Faith Shearin
Swenson Poetry Award Winners
May Swenson Poetry Award Volume 6, with foreward by Mark Doty. The Owl Question underscores and relishes life's transitions from young girl to woman, from child to wife to mother, and from isolation to connection this poet's bright sense of abundance and awe, here expressed in finely tuned detail and refreshingly open observation, reads like a collective memory. Though private and closely held, these questionings are as familiar as our own souls, and in their transformation to poetry, Shearin has created the very "map" she wishes to guide her when she "can't learn the world fast enough."

The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning
Editors' Message
In his essay Two Kinds of Thinking Carl Jung describes direct and indirect thinking. Associated with language, direct thinking’s premier ability is parsing and defining reality so that we might work on that reality and act in the world. Associated with imagery, dreaming, and story telling, indirect thinking taps the realm of mythos where we dwell in fantasies and paradoxes. Indirect thinking is neither a contradiction nor denial of rationality. Rather, it is thinking that operates by a different logic, one capable of offering different insights, different versions of possible realities.
Jung’s two kinds of thinking reflect a …

True learning—learning which results in some permanent cognitive change—is far too unpredictable to be controlled by format curricular designs. The formal curriculum of English studies is valuable largely as a stage setting for educational accidents.
