"As above, so below, as within, so without, as the universe, so the soul." Hermes Trismegistus
I am but a humbly painted vessel of the Almighty Artist, here to share in this uniquely significant piece of the great mural. They say that art imitates life and that through the creation of art we become one with the divine painter of the universe. That is why the calling of the artist is the most noble of pursuits, for the artist is the truest reflection of the source of things. Yet art is not finite and cannot be nailed down. Like the …

Creative Expressive Writing And Perceived Self-Efficacy In The Writing Center—A Tutor’S Narrative, Allison King
McNair Scholars Research Journal
You know the story…the one about a curious little girl, captivated by a little white rabbit? Like young Alice, my curiosity compelled me to follow my own white rabbit down an unknown path, at least to me. It found me when I attained an internship in our university writing center the fall of 2012. And down the rabbit-hole, I fell. My adventures in writing center wonderland grew into an infatuation with writing—the tutoring of, the process of, the pedagogies of, the praxis of. Many discourses of writing pull at me, begging to be consumed and adapted to suit the situation. …

English Theses & Dissertations
As a reader, I am drawn to poetry and literature that inform me of something new, writings that move me emotionally but more importantly, quench my thirst for new knowledge, culture, and little known history. As a writer, I am compelled to inform my readers of these facts and present them in a way as to evoke deeper meanings and emotions.
THE NEWS REEL is a collection of poems that explores cultural identities, the experimental poetic journalism. It is defined by literature which strives to provide a forum for public criticism and compromise, based on current or past relevant news …

Paricutin, Marie Hammontree
Paricutin, Marie Hammontree

The liveliest and youngest of the world's volcanoes, Paricutin is now a mecca for visitors from every continent. For years the farm of Dionisio Pulido, two miles outside of the village of Paricutin, had been a favorite picnic spot for neighboring Mexicans because the ground was so warm and dry and hospitable. On February 20, 1943, while plowing in his cornfield, Senor Pulido heard a noise from under the soil. Louder it came and then with an earth shaking roar began pouring rocks and cinders. into the air. The next day there was a cone-shaped pile twenty-five feet high. Within …

Freedom: A Symposium, William Harper, Earl Murphy, David E. Barnhart, Fred Mcnanny
Manuscripts
Note: The idea of freedom has been a vital motivation for speculation, deliberation, and action throughout all time. In Its wake lie both assurance and confusion. Its backward glance falls upon olive branches some still wet with blood, for freedom ranges from divine heights' to satanic depths in man's definition and application. What and how we think of freedom is important to these times, the beginnings of our future. The four essays in this collection are attempts to reach a definition of freedom. We hope they may lead to individual considerations of this problem.

A picnic was spread on the bank and they surrounded it in positions of spiritual abandon. One, a long and somewhat undulant girl, lay among them gazing into the river that rolled peacefully yet dense with clay after the spring flood. The opposite bank, mysterious as an arabesque, hid in its shadow-work of trees the lives that like theirs, had moved back from afternoon; lives bound to the waterway by probing beak and wading leg, by a diet of fish or of insects Whose larval time is passed in mud and water. Look closely! implied the arabesque: a leaf may …
Culture And Religion, Russell Foster
Culture And Religion, Russell Foster
Manuscripts
Matthew Arnold was a deeply religious man; his training as a child insured that, but in his essay, "Culture and Anarchy," shallow reading might lead to the false assumption that he had little faith in religion. More intensive study, however, makes his underlying faith apparent . True, he found fault with religious organizations which were so self-satisfied because they preached the subduing of animalities that they lost sight of the goal of real religion, a way of life striving for the brotherhood of man.
Digital Media Literacy In A Sports, Popular Culture, And Literature Course, Carolyn Fortuna
Digital Media Literacy In A Sports, Popular Culture, And Literature Course, Carolyn Fortuna
Journal of Media Literacy Education
Abstract: This article considers how media sports culture is an apt space for digital media literacy instruction. Describing a senior year high school English course that requires students to deconstruct and compose with sports media texts, the author outlines how learning modules, analysis of curated collections of texts through heuristics, and mentor texts help students achieve higher literacy levels. The author argues that sports media literacy, due to its authenticity and relevance, can be a model for traditional literacy classrooms as ways to infuse multimodal texts and help students to gain both enhanced communication skills and critical distance from media …

The Goose
'The Rooster and the Lemon' is a collaborative work of critical-creative writing and photography between artists-writers Luis Mario Guerra and Connie Michele Morey. The text and image is a part of a larger body of work that emerged from a trip to Havana in December 2013 and is still in the process of unfolding through additional visual forms. The prose and photographs question the im/possibility of stasis and taxonomical containment in an ecological continuum where the processes of death and life and interdependent and imperceptibly entangled.

They spilled out over the German countryside in all directions. They stood bareheaded along the roads gaping pitifully at the invaders, still dumbfounded by their sudden release from the slave labor camp. A few hours before, their guards had fled inland to escape the long steel probing fingers of the allied armies. Like wild animals fleeing a forest fire, the prisoners that could still walk had poured forth (rum the hated camp as soon as their guards disappeared. They had no destination. At that moment they were nothing but starved animals putting all possible space between them and their infamous …

When the deadly, billowing, mushroom- shaped cloud signifying the explosion of the atomic bomb surged skyward over Bikini Atoll, it marked the opening of another chapter in the history of man's attempts to control the universe. Small, weak, and insignificant though he appeared when contrasted to the unlimited expanse of the cosmos, that branch of the animal world known as man had now tightened and extended his control over the universe. Is it any wonder that his chest swelled with pride as he contemplated his latest achievement of power? Is he to blame for suddenly wondering if he could not …

HAVE you ever seen death? Not dead people, but death? Did you ever see a dog hit by a car, and watch him struggle, and whine, and sob? That is part of death. Have you ever read about a person taking poison and the way he gasped in agony, breath coming shorter and faster until there was no more breath? That too, is part of death. Have you ever smelled the odor of gangrene? No struggle here, just a repugnant odor. Did you ever sit up all night with an old person, all worn out by life, and watch him …
