The Jungle Down The Street, The Town Across The Bridge, All Is Very Well, Taylor B. Tyson Apr 2015

The Jungle Down The Street, The Town Across The Bridge, All Is Very Well, Taylor B. Tyson

Honors College Theses

The Jungle Down the Street, the Town Across the Bridge, All is Very Well is a series of short, nonfiction essays attempting to paint several portraits—regional, ecological, familial, and personal. Focused around the town of Apalachicola, Florida, it addresses themes of family, folklore, tragedy, and the “New Sublime,” or the feeling of wonder at the beauty that precedes an inevitable end. The piece attempts to blend multiple narrative and thematic arcs through the use of humor, anecdote, and historical research.

Avenge, O Lord, Tom Misch Apr 2015

Manuscripts

When Milton wrote his great sonnet, "On the Late Massacre in Piedmont," he had just been engaged in one of the most bitter Controversies in his life. In an anonymous pamphlet he had been attacked as a "monster, ugly, huge, bereft of sight," and he answered these charges in even more violent language. After this bitterness had passed, Milton brought forth the eloquent eighteenth sonnet, believed by many critics to be his greatest.

Who I Am Through The Lens Of Distortion, Mackenzie Alena Boyer Ms.

Capstone Projects

Who I Am Through the Lens of Distortion is a work of fact and fiction, mixing some of Mackenzie’s actual life events with surrealistic/dreamlike details. During Mackenzie’s time at Otterbein she has loved blending her loves of fiction writing and poetry into one beautiful art form. This project is a culmination of just that. Mackenzie has chosen to focus on her life as a college student, in regards to her memories and her growth as an independent adult, feminist, woman, and writer with distortion of place and time to spice things up. In this project she attempts to answer the …

Samwise Gamgee: Beauty, Truth, And Heroism In J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord Of The Rings, Christine Loraine Chichester Apr 2015

Samwise Gamgee: Beauty, Truth, And Heroism In J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord Of The Rings, Christine Loraine Chichester

Masters Theses

The Lord of the Rings is a well-established part of fantasy's literary canon because of J.R.R. Tolkien's creative imaginary setting and his use of legendary characters. However, this story, and in particular, its use of the archetypal hero's journey deals not only in the Beauty of myth, but also in the universal Truth of Story. Tolkien combines aspects of well-established archetypes with unchanging Truth in order to create a fitting and ultimately Good depiction of heroism. This thesis seeks to examine how Samwise Gamgee, an unexpected hero, experiences or does not experience the stages of Joseph Campbell's Adventure of the …
