Data Reduction Procedure For An Experimental Method Of Measuring The Velocity-Coupled Response Function Of Solid Propellants, William H. Jarvis Apr 1989

Data Reduction Procedure For An Experimental Method Of Measuring The Velocity-Coupled Response Function Of Solid Propellants, William H. Jarvis

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

A computer program has been developed for calculation of the velocity-coupled response function of solid-propellants from experimentally measured pressure data. The proposed velocity-coupled response function measurement apparatus consists of an end-burner combustor where the propellant sample is oscillated in a direction normal to the flow in the presence of a standing acoustic wave within the combustion chamber. The pressure measurements are made at select points along the length of the chamber.

The data reduction program consists of a Runge-Kutta routine driven by a BFGS multivariable search routine. The Runge-Kutta routine determines the pressure distribution within the chamber of the proposed …

Performance Modeling And Enhancement For The Atamm Data Flow Architecture, Sukhamoy Som Apr 1989

Performance Modeling And Enhancement For The Atamm Data Flow Architecture, Sukhamoy Som

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Algorithm To Architecture Mapping Model (ATAMM) is a new marked graph model from which the rules for data and control flow in a homogeneous, multicomputer, data flow architecture may be defined. This research is concerned with performance modeling and performance enhancement for periodic execution of large-grain, decision-free algorithms in such an ATAMM defined architecture. Performance measures and bounds are established. Algorithm transformation techniques are identified for performance enhancement and reduction of computing element requirements. Operating strategies are developed for optimum time performance and for sub-optimum time performance under limited availability of computing elements. An ATAMM simulator is used to test …

A Classification Approach For Automated Reasoning Systems--A Case Study In Graph Theory, Rong Lin Apr 1989

A Classification Approach For Automated Reasoning Systems--A Case Study In Graph Theory, Rong Lin

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

Reasoning systems which create classifications of structured objects face the problem of how object descriptions can be used to reflect their components as well as relations among these components. Current reasoning systems on graph theory do not adequately provide models to discover complex relations among mathematical concepts (eg: relations involving subgraphs) mainly due to the inability to solve this problem. This thesis presents an approach to construct a knowledge-based system, GC (Graph Classification), which overcomes this difficulty in performing automated reasoning in graph theory. We describe graph concepts based on an attribute called Linear Recursive Constructivity (LRC). LRC defines classes …

An Analysis Of High Dimensional Data, Ravishankar Swamy Apr 1989

An Analysis Of High Dimensional Data, Ravishankar Swamy

Masters Theses

Projection of a high dimensional data set into a two dimensional subspace can lead to very interesting projections. Note that P dimensional data can be projected onto P orthogonal two dimensional planes, which completely determines the original data. Two dimensional orthogonal projections can be analyzed for patterns in several ways.

In this work we will be trying to explore an unknown P dimensional data set by comparing its test projections with a set of standard patterns. A set of P dimensional data is transformed into K.K grid counts and the whole process of recognition is done using these K.K grid …

Parameter Non-Stationarity In A Model To Estimate The Business Value Of Information Technology, Robert J. Kauffman Apr 1989

Parameter Non-Stationarity In A Model To Estimate The Business Value Of Information Technology, Robert J. Kauffman

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Developing robust and refined measures to quantify strategic impacts is a major challenge facing researchers who seek to improve methods for IT investment evaluation. This paper presents a means to test for parameter "non-stationarity" in a model which quantifies the strategic contribution of IT. An iterative "jackknife" procedure is used to diagnose if different local competitive and demographic conditions present in branch banking enhance or suppress leverage on deposit market share associated with membership in an ATM network. Preliminary results suggest this approach will be useful for managers who need to evaluate similar ITs which operate in different environments.

Model-Based Interpretation Of Time-Varying Medical Data, Michael G. Kahn, Lawrence M. Fagan Washington University In St. Louis, Lewis B. Sheiner Washington University In St. Louis

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Temporal concepts are critical is medical therapy-planning. If given early enough, specific therapeutic choices may abort or suppress evolving undesired changes in a patient’s clinical status. Effective medical decision making demands recognition and interpretation of complex temporal changes that permeate the medical record. This paper presents a methodology for representing and using medical knowledge about temporal relationships to infer the presence of clinically relevant events, and describes a program, called TOPAZ, that uses this methodology to generate a narrative summary of such events. A unique feature of TOPAZ is the use of numeric and symbolic modeling techniques to perform temporal …

The Nature Of Parallel Programming, Per Brinch Hansen Mar 1989

The Nature Of Parallel Programming, Per Brinch Hansen

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Technical Reports

Parallel programming is the art of writing programs for computers that perform many operations simultaneously. This essay discusses the nature of parallel programming without going into technical details. It uses a sorting problem to illustrate what it means to solve a problem in parallel, how we write parallel programs, how parallel computers execute them, and how fast they run. The author expects that scientific users of parallel computers may find ease of programming more important than maximum performance. He suggests ways to make this possible.

Isometries Homotopic To The Identity, Douglas A. Norris Mar 1989

Isometries Homotopic To The Identity, Douglas A. Norris

Mathematics and Computer Science

The types of surfaces which admit nontrivial isometries homotopic to the identity are classified up to diffeomorphism. In dimension three this is done for complete manifolds of constant negative curvature. Three-dimensional visibility manifolds that admit nontrivial isometries homotopic to the identity are shown to be diffeomorphic to a product L x RI.

Impacts Of Industrial Robotics: Potential Effects On Labor And Costs Within The Metalworking Industries, Steven M. Miller Mar 1989

Impacts Of Industrial Robotics: Potential Effects On Labor And Costs Within The Metalworking Industries, Steven M. Miller

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

According to leading expert opinion, industrial robots are among the most important innovations of recent decades. Yet there is very considerable uncertainty (and disagreement) as to the rate at which the use of robots will spread and what their effects on employment, costs, and market structure will be. As stressed in 1983 by Congress’s Office of Technology Assessment: “A central question for an analysis of the social and economic impacts of programmable automation is whether programmable automation is likely to spread especially rapidly among firms and industries, and why.” The author analyzes the job displacement effects of industrial robots, as …

Method For Automatic Level Matching In A Local Network, In Particular A Multicomputer Arrangement, Comprising A Bus System Having Lightwaves Guides, For The Purpose Of Collision Recognition, Hans Thinschmidt, Franz J. Kurfess

Computer Science and Software Engineering

A method is disclosed for automatic level matching in a local network, particularly for a multicomputer arrangement, comprising an optical bus system, for the purpose of collision recognition. Given a required level matching, the process is executed such that a fundamental phase is provided in which level matching devices respectively individually assigned to the computers are synchronized with one another. A first matching phase is provided in which all level matching devices simultaneously execute a process for setting a reference voltage to the lowest received level, whereby the sum of all attenuation components of the signal path at the receiving …
