Cascading Space Efficient Variation Of The Lzw Algorithm And Arithmetic Coding, Shobha Raj
Cascading Space Efficient Variation Of The Lzw Algorithm And Arithmetic Coding, Shobha Raj
Theses
Two known compression algorithms appropriate for communication are LZW and the Arithmetic Coding method. Both are adaptive and require no extra communication from the encoder to the decoder. Here we have considered a space efficient variation of the LZW algorithm which achieves better compression.
We present a scheme to cascade the space efficient variation of the LZW algorithm with Arithmetic Coding into a space efficient data compression algorithm which achieves a higher compression ratio and is appropriate for communication.

Composite Stock Cutting Through Simulated Annealing, Pipatpong Poshyanonda, Cihan H. Dagli
Computer Science Technical Reports
This paper explores the use of Simulated Annealing as an optimization technique for the problem Composite Material Stock Cutting. The shapes are not constrained to be convex polygons or even regular shapes. However, due to the composite nature of the material, the orientation of the shapes on the stock is restricted. For placements of various shapes, we show how to determine a cost function, annealing parameters, and performance.

Ilona: An Advanced Cai Tutorial System For The Fundamentals Of Logic, Otto Mayer, Graham E. Oberem, Fillia Makedon
Computer Science Technical Reports
An advanced tutorial system for teaching the fundamentals of logic has been developed to run on UNIX work stations and commonly available micro-computers. An important part of this tutorial is the intelligent problem solving environment which allows students to practise wiriting logical sentences in mathematical notation. A natural language system for intelligent logic narrative analysis (ILONA) allows students to type in their own logical sentences in plain English and then have the computer check their working when they write these in mathematical form. ILONA is an intelligent tutoring system which allows students a great deal of initiative in problem solving …
Fault-Tolerant Parallel Matrix Multiplication With One Iteration Fault Detection Latency, Chul-Eui Hong, Bruce M. Mcmillin
Fault-Tolerant Parallel Matrix Multiplication With One Iteration Fault Detection Latency, Chul-Eui Hong, Bruce M. Mcmillin
Computer Science Technical Reports
The checksum technique is a low cost method to detect errors in matrix operations performed by processor arrays. The fault detection of this method is done only at problem termination, so this method is not an effective fault tolerance technique for large scale matrix multiplication.
This paper presents a new algorithm, the ID algorithm, which minimizes the fault-detection latency, In the ID algorithm, a fault is detected as soon a5 the fault occurs instead of at problem termination. For 112 processors, the fault-latency time of the ID algorithm is l/11 of that of checksum algorithm with a run-time penalty of …

Binary Perfect Weighted Coverings (Pwc) I. The Linear Case, G. D. Cohen, S. N. Litsyn, H. F. Mattson Jr
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Technical Reports
This paper deals with an extension of perfect codes to fractional (or weighted) coverings. We shall derive a Lloyd theorem --- a strong necessary condition of existence---and start a classification of these perfect coverings according to their diameter. We illustrate by pointing to list decoding.

On Perfect Weighted Coverings With Small Radius, G. D. Cohen, S. N. Litsyn, H. F. Mattson Jr
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Technical Reports
We extend the results of our previous paper [8] to the nonlinear case: The Lloyd polynomial of the covering has at least R distinct roots among 1, ... , n, where R is the covering radius. We investigate PWC with diameter 1, finding a partial characterization. We complete an investigation begun in [8] on linear PMC with distance 1 and diameter 2.
A Comparison Of Load Balancing Algorithms For Parallel Computations, N. Mansouri, Geoffrey C. Fox
A Comparison Of Load Balancing Algorithms For Parallel Computations, N. Mansouri, Geoffrey C. Fox
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Technical Reports
Three physical optimization methods are considered in this paper for load balancing parallel computations. These are simulated annealing, genetic algorithms, and neural networks. Some design choices and the inclusion of additional steps lead to new versions of the algorithms with different solution qualities and execution times. The performances of these versions are critically evaluated and compared for test cases with different topologies and sizes. Orthogonal recursive coordinate bisection is also included in the comparison as a typical simple deterministic method. Simulation results show that the algorithms have diverse properties. Hence, different algorithms can be applied to different problems and requirements. …
Parallel Genetic Algorithms With Application To Load Balancing For Parallel Computing, N. Mansouri, Geoffrey C. Fox
Parallel Genetic Algorithms With Application To Load Balancing For Parallel Computing, N. Mansouri, Geoffrey C. Fox
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Technical Reports
A new coarse grain parallel genetic algorithm (PGA) and a new implementation of a data-parallel GA are presented in this paper. They are based on models of natural evolution in which the population is formed of discontinuous or continuous subpopulations. In addition to simulating natural evolution, the intrinsic parallelism in the two PGA's minimizes the possibility of premature convergence that the implementation of classic GA's often encounters. Intrinsic parallelism also allows the evolution of fit genotypes in a smaller number of generations in the PGA's than in sequential GA's, leading to superlinear speed-ups. The PGA's have been implemented on a …

An Application Of Interactive Computer Graphics To The Study Of Inferential Statistics And The General Linear Model, Stephen D. Pearce
An Application Of Interactive Computer Graphics To The Study Of Inferential Statistics And The General Linear Model, Stephen D. Pearce
Theses and Dissertations
This research created a learning environment, known as the Pearce Projection Modeling Environment (PPME) which is used as a tool by a teacher and student. The PPME was developed in an effort to create a new approach to the study of the General Linear Model through a constructive and projective, geometric approach. While the geometric approach to the GLM was developed over the past century, it has not been used extensively because of the inherent complexities associated with visualizing vector spaces. With the PPME, visualization is accomplished effortlessly. The PPME is a computer program that allows the student to enter …

Education Necessary For Air Force Software Managers To Use The Ada Programming Language And Software Engineering Effectively, James W. Worley Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
This research investigated the perceived Ada and software engineering education needs of software managers throughout the Air Force and provided recommendations to Air Staff for developing the education. Since the Department of Defense mandated all DOD agencies use the Ada programming language for software development, the education of the personnel who have to support the policy has lagged behind the implementation Ada is not a simple language to use and is only fully effective if used with sound software engineering principles. A survey was given to Air Force mid-level personnel who manage software in some capacity. Of the software personnel …

An Application Of Artificial Intelligence Technology Within The Standard Base Supply System, Richard G. Nelson
An Application Of Artificial Intelligence Technology Within The Standard Base Supply System, Richard G. Nelson
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigated the feasibility of applying artificial intelligence technology within the Standard Base Supply System (SBSS). With assembly endless reductions in manpower authorizations within the SBSS and the potential for a continued loss of expert knowledge, the use of knowledge-based system (KBSs) was examined to determine if these systems could alleviate this of manpower. Literature related to the fields of artificial intelligence, expert systems, and KBSs was traced, yielding a methodology for identifying candidate problems, and for the development, verification, and validation of prototype KBSs. This methodology was then employed within the research, culminating in the creation, verification, and …
A Topological Model For Parallel Algorithm Design, Jeffrey A. Simmers
A Topological Model For Parallel Algorithm Design, Jeffrey A. Simmers
Theses and Dissertations
This research demonstrates that formal, mathematical analysis in theoretical computer science can be recast in terms of the topology of complete metric spaces, and also presents a methodical technique for developing formal specifications. This effort shows that the topology of complete metric spaces provides a tool that can be used to both recreate major results about computational models and also to develop new results about these models. Using the two computational models CSP and UNITY, this effort shows that the required mathematics needed to support this alternative to the traditional analysis of computational models can be readily supported by a …
Visual Knowledge Query Language As A Front-End To Relational Systems, Keng Siau, Kok Phuang Tan, Hock Chuan Chan
Visual Knowledge Query Language As A Front-End To Relational Systems, Keng Siau, Kok Phuang Tan, Hock Chuan Chan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Relational query languages like SQL and QUEL require the users to understand the complex database structure. This is a burden on end users, especially novice end users who access the database on a casual and infrequent basis. To alleviate the need to know the logical database organization, this paper proposes the use of a semantic data model, known as the Enhanced Entity-Relationship (EER) model, as a front-end to the relational systems. A formal, high-level Visual Knowledge Query Language (VKQL) has also been designed for this interface. This language provides for knowledge abstraction as the user communicates only domain knowledge with …

A Self-Organizing Binary Decision Tree For Incrementally Defined Rule-Based Systems, Douglas M. Campbell, Tony R. Martinez
Faculty Publications
This paper presents an adaptive self-organizing concurrent system (ASOCS) model for massively parallel processing of incrementally defined rule systems in such areas as adaptive logic, robotics, logical inference, and dynamic control. An ASOCS is an adaptive network composed of many simple computing elements operating asynchronously and in parallel. This paper focuses on adaptive algorithm 3 (AA3) and details its architecture and learning algorithm. It has advantages over previous ASOCS models in simplicity, implementability, and cost. An ASOCS can operate in either a data processing mode or a learning mode. During the data processing mode, an ASOCS acts as a parallel …

Growing competition in the investment banking industry has given rise to increasing demand for high functionality software applications that can be developed in a short period of time. Yet delivering such applications creates a bottleneck in software development activities. This dilemma can be addressed when firms shift to development methods that emphasize software reusability. This article examines the productivity implications of object and repository-based integrated computer-aided software engineering (ICASE) software development in the context of a major investment bank's information systems strategy. The strategy emphasizes software reusability. Our empirical results, based on data from 20 projects that delivered software for …
Work-Preserving Real-Time Emulation Of Meshes On Butterfly Networks, Alf-Christian Achilles
Work-Preserving Real-Time Emulation Of Meshes On Butterfly Networks, Alf-Christian Achilles
Theses
The emulation of a guest network G on a host network H is work-preserving and real-time if the inefficiency, that is the ratio WG/WH of the amounts of work done in both networks, and the slowdown of the emulation are O(1).
In this thesis we show that an infinite number of meshes can be emulated on a butterfly in a work-preserving real-time manner, despite the fact that any emulation of an s x s-node mesh in a butterfly with load 1 has a dilation of Ω(logs).
The recursive embedding of a mesh in a butterfly presented by …
