An Efficient Scheme For Authenticating Public Keys In Sensor Networks, Wenliang Du, Ronghua Wang, Peng Ning Jan 2005

An Efficient Scheme For Authenticating Public Keys In Sensor Networks, Wenliang Du, Ronghua Wang, Peng Ning

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

With the advance of technology, Public Key Cryptography (PKC) will sooner or later be widely used in wireless sensor networks. Recently, it has been shown that the performance of some public key algorithms, such as Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC), is already close to being practical on sensor nodes. However, the energy consumption of PKC is still expensive, especially compared to symmetric-key algorithms. To maximize the lifetime of batteries, we should minimize the use of PKC whenever possible in sensor networks. This paper investigates how to replace one of the important PKC operations–the public key authentication–with symmetric key operations that are …

Polymorphic Self-* Agents For Stigmergic Fault Mitigation In Large-Scale Real-Time Embedded Systems, Derek Messie, Jae C. Oh Jan 2005

Polymorphic Self-* Agents For Stigmergic Fault Mitigation In Large-Scale Real-Time Embedded Systems, Derek Messie, Jae C. Oh

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

Organization and coordination of agents within large-scale, complex, distributed environments is one of the primary challenges in the field of multi-agent systems. A lot of interest has surfaced recently around self-* (self-organizing, self-managing, self-optimizing, self-protecting) agents. This paper presents polymorphic self-* agents that evolve a core set of roles and behavior based on environmental cues. The agents adapt these roles based on the changing demands of the environment, and are directly implementable in computer systems applications. The design combines strategies from game theory, stigmergy, and other biologically inspired models to address fault mitigation in large-scale, real-time, distributed systems. The agents …

Student Usability Project Recommendations Define Information Architecture For Library Technology, Erika Rogers

Computer Science and Software Engineering

This paper demonstrates how interaction and usability evaluation techniques (e.g., Preece 2002) support the restructuring of information in a number of functional library areas. Senior level computer science students studying human-computer interaction principles worked with library leaders on three different projects: i) a prototype of an interactive data visualization application for more effective collections management; ii) usability recommendations for improving access to the electronic database systems; and iii) design and development of a technology-mediated, Web accessible digital research portal. All three cases started out as quarter-long (8-week) class projects with teams of three to four computer science students whose goals …

Intelligent Software Systems In Historical Context, Jens G. Pohl Jan 2005

Intelligent Software Systems In Historical Context, Jens G. Pohl

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

The purpose of this chapter is to trace the evolution of intelligent software from data-centric applications that essentially encapsulate their data environment to ontology-based applications with automated reasoning capabilities. It is argued that a distinction may be drawn between human intelligence and component capabilities within a more general definition of intelligence, and that such component capabilities can be embedded in computer software. The primary vehicle in the quest for intelligent software has been the gradual recognition of the central role played by data and information, rather than the logic and functionality of the application. The three milestones in this evolution …

Pigtail: A Pig Addendum, Todd W. Neller, Clifton G.M. Presser Jan 2005

Pigtail: A Pig Addendum, Todd W. Neller, Clifton G.M. Presser

Computer Science Faculty Publications

The object of the jeopardy dice game Pig is to be the first player to reach 100 points. Each turn, a player repeatedly rolls a die until either a 1 is rolled or the player holds and scores the sum of the rolls (i.e., the turn total). At any time during a player’s turn, the player is faced with two choices: roll or hold. If the player rolls a 1, the player scores nothing and it becomes the opponent’s turn. If the player rolls a number other than 1, the number is added to the player’s turn total …

Unifying An Introduction To Artificial Intelligence Course Through Machine Learning Laboratory Experiences, Ingrid Russell, Zdravko Markov, Todd W. Neller, Michael Georgiopoulos, Susan Coleman

Computer Science Faculty Publications

This paper presents work on a collaborative project funded by the National Science Foundation that incorporates machine learning as a unifying theme to teach fundamental concepts typically covered in the introductory Artificial Intelligence courses. The project involves the development of an adaptable framework for the presentation of core AI topics. This is accomplished through the development, implementation, and testing of a suite of adaptable, hands-on laboratory projects that can be closely integrated into the AI course. Through the design and implementation of learning systems that enhance commonly-deployed applications, our model acknowledges that intelligent systems are best taught through their application …
