Advancing Voice Spoofing Detection In Thai : A Comprehensive Dataset And Performance Analysis On Speaking Styles And Channel Effects, Ticho Urai Jan 2025

Advancing Voice Spoofing Detection In Thai : A Comprehensive Dataset And Performance Analysis On Speaking Styles And Channel Effects, Ticho Urai

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Voice authentication is increasingly used in applications such as banking and call center verification, but it faces serious risks from spoofed voices. Recent advances in text-to-speech (TTS) and voice cloning make it possible to generate highly natural fake speech, creating an urgent need for robust anti-spoofing systems. While most prior work focuses on English, little research addresses the Thai language. To fill this gap, we present the Chula Spoofed Speech (CSS) dataset, a large-scale Thai corpus containing 1.3M utterances of both bona fide and synthetic speech. The synthetic samples are generated using five state-of-the-art TTS systems from the same utterances …

Motion Artifacts (Ma) At-Rest In Measured Arterial Pulse Signals: Time-Varying Amplitude In Each Harmonic And Non-Flat Harmonic-Ma Coupled Baseline, Md Mahfuzur Rahman, Mamun Hasan, Zhili Hao Jan 2025

Motion Artifacts (Ma) At-Rest In Measured Arterial Pulse Signals: Time-Varying Amplitude In Each Harmonic And Non-Flat Harmonic-Ma Coupled Baseline, Md Mahfuzur Rahman, Mamun Hasan, Zhili Hao

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

Motion artifacts (MA) cause great variability in a measured arterial pulse signal, and treatment of MA solely as a baseline drift (BD) fails to eliminate its effect on the measured signal. This paper presents a study on the effect of MA at rest (< 0.7 Hz) on measured arterial pulse signals using a microfluidic-based tactile sensor. By taking full account of the dynamic behavior of the transmission path from the true pulse signal in an artery to a measured pulse signal at the sensor, the tissue-contact-sensor (TCS) stack, an analytical model of MA in a measured pulse signal is developed. In this model, the TCS stack is treated as a 1DOF system for its dynamic behavior; MA is quantified as the displacement (i.e., BD) and time-varying system parameters (TVSP) of the TCS stack. The mathematical expression of MA in a measured pulse signal reveals that while BD remains as low-frequency additive noise, TVSP causes time-varying harmonics in a measured pulse signal. Further time-frequency analysis (TFA) of measured pulse signals validates the existence of TVSP and, for the first time, reveals its effect on a measured pulse signal: time-varying amplitude in each harmonic and non-flat harmonic-MA-coupled baseline.

Online Adaptive Optimal Tracking Control Of Uncertain Strict Feedback Discrete-Time Systems With Hardware Verification Using A Quadrotor Uav, Maxwell Geiger, S. Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This article considers the infinite time horizon optimal tracking control problem for discrete time (DT) partially uncertain strict feedback systems with application to quadrotor UAVs. First, the strict feedback DT system is transformed into an equivalent affine nonlinear DT system in terms of tracking error dynamics. The optimal tracking control problem is solved using an augmented system approach, where a horizon of future reference trajectory points are used in the augmented state, as compared to using a single point. The internal dynamics of the original nonlinear strict feedback system and the transformed affine system in terms of error dynamics are …

Improved Optimal Tracking Of Uncertain Nonlinear Discrete-Time Systems Using Experience Replay, Maxwell Geiger, Sarangapani Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper addresses the infinite horizon optimal tracking control problem for partially uncertain control-affine nonlinear discrete-time (DT) systems, where the control input dynamics are known. Multi-layer critic and actor neural networks (MNNs) are utilized for online estimation of the infinite horizon value function and optimal control input. The NN weights are tuned online using a direct temporal difference error (TDE)-driven learning approach, which modifies the singular values of the gradient with respect to the NN weights to accelerate their convergence. The critic NN uses a novel experience replay technique to improve sample efficiency without introducing biased TDEs and guarantee the …

An Extensive Analysis Of Match-Tracking Methods For Artmap, Niklas M. Melton, Leonardo Enzo Brito Da Silva, Donald C. Wunsch

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper identifies and studies five match-tracking (MT) methods in the adaptive resonance theory (ART) literature and conducts a detailed comparative analysis of these in ARTMAP applications. We focus on model performance for each MT method with respect to time and space efficiency as well as classification accuracy. Experimental results indicate that one MT variant, used in ARTMAP applications for the first time in this work, provides significant improvements in computational efficiency: depending on the ARTMAP variant, it was able to achieve up to one order of magnitude reduction in both time and space requirements, albeit with a compromise in …

State Preparation Of Lattice Field Theories Using Quantum Optimal Control, Jack Y. Araz, Siddhanth Bhowmick, Matt Grau, Thomas J. Mcentire, Felix Ringer

Physics Faculty Publications

We explore the application of quantum optimal control (QOC) techniques to state preparation of lattice field theories on quantum computers. As a first example, we focus on the Schwinger model, quantum electrodynamics in 1 + 1 dimensions. We demonstrate that QOC can significantly speed up the ground state preparation compared to gate-based methods, even for models with long-range interactions. Using classical simulations, we explore the dependence on the interqubit coupling strength and the device connectivity, and we study the optimization in the presence of noise. While our simulations indicate potential speedups, the results strongly depend on the device specifications. In …

Enhanced Continual Reinforcement Learning-Based Output Feedback Control Of Heterogeneous Quadrotors Formation, Ehsan Soleimani, S. Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a unified framework for the safe and optimal control of heterogeneous quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicles (QUAVs) in formation, enabling multitask missions without requiring precise system dynamics. To address partial state observability, a multilayer neural network (MNN) observer is designed to estimate unmeasured states. Reinforcement learning (RL) is employed for optimal control utilizing an MNN ensuring adaptability. Barrier Lyapunov Functions (BLFs) are integrated into the RL framework to enforce safety by maintaining QUAVs within predefined constraints. An enhanced continual learning (ECL) method is proposed to improve the adaptability of MNNs. This method enables effective multitask learning while mitigating …

Ethics Vs.. Regulation: Converging Frameworks For Trustworthy Human-Centered Ai In Biomedical Research, Tayo Obafemi-Ajayi, Tiffani J. Bright, Emily F. Wong, Donald Wunsch, Joan Peckham, Jason H. Moore

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The accelerating impact of AI in biomedical research is driving significant advances in precision medicine. As these systems increasingly shape health outcomes, the imperative to develop trustworthy, reliable, and ethically grounded AI becomes more pressing, particularly in addressing concerns related to data integrity, patient safety, and equitable outcomes. While the potential of AI to transform biomedical research is clear, its responsible integration depends on more than technological capability. Ensuring that these systems are aligned with societal values requires a dual commitment: the operationalization of ethical principles throughout the AI life cycle and the establishment of robust regulatory mechanisms. Ethics provides …

Understanding The Influence Of Image Enhancement On Underwater Object Detection: A Quantitative And Qualitative Study, Ashraf Saleem, Ali Awad, Sidike Paheding, Evan Lucas, Timothy C. Havens, Peter C. Esselman Jan 2025

Understanding The Influence Of Image Enhancement On Underwater Object Detection: A Quantitative And Qualitative Study, Ashraf Saleem, Ali Awad, Sidike Paheding, Evan Lucas, Timothy C. Havens, Peter C. Esselman

Michigan Tech Publications

Underwater image enhancement is often perceived as a disadvantageous process to object detection. We propose a novel analysis of the interactions between enhancement and detection, elaborating on the potential of enhancement to improve detection. In particular, we evaluate object detection performance for each individual image rather than across the entire set to allow a direct performance comparison of each image before and after enhancement. This approach enables the generation of unique queries to identify the outperforming and underperforming enhanced images compared to the original images. To accomplish this, we first produce enhanced image sets of the original images using recent …

Exploring The Impact Of Value Co-Creation Through Ai-Driven Chatbbots On Customer Repeat Purchases, Dooyoung Choi, Jaeha Lee Jan 2025

Exploring The Impact Of Value Co-Creation Through Ai-Driven Chatbbots On Customer Repeat Purchases, Dooyoung Choi, Jaeha Lee

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Faculty Publications

Drawing on the Stimulus-Organism-Response (S-O-R) framework, this study explores how perceived value co-creation during chatbot interactions influences customer repeat purchase intentions through cognitive, emotional, and social responses to chatbots. A survey of 220 participants revealed that perceived value co-creation significantly affected repeat purchase intentions, with cognitive evaluations, emotional reactions, and social value serving as key mediators. However, the direct effect of value co-creation on purchase intentions was not significant. The findings suggest that while value co-creation enhances consumer engagement, repeat purchases occur only when consumers experience positive cognitive, emotional, and social outcomes. Therefore, it is crucial for retailers to incorporate …

In the context of higher education, however, the challenges take a different shape. Faculty members may express concerns about how AI could disrupt traditional teaching methods, necessitate changes in course delivery, and raise issues related to job security …

Towards Dynamic Learner State: Orchestrating Ai Agents And Workplace Performance Via The Model Context Protocol, Mohan Yang, Nolan Lovett, Belle Li, Zhen Hou Jan 2025

Towards Dynamic Learner State: Orchestrating Ai Agents And Workplace Performance Via The Model Context Protocol, Mohan Yang, Nolan Lovett, Belle Li, Zhen Hou

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Faculty Publications

Current learning and development approaches often struggle to capture dynamic individual capabilities, particularly the skills they acquire informally every day on the job. This dynamic creates a significant gap between what traditional models think people know and their actual performance, leading to an incomplete and often outdated understanding of how ready the workforce truly is, which can hinder organizational adaptability in rapidly evolving environments. This paper proposes a novel dynamic learner-state ecosystem—an AI-driven solution designed to bridge this gap. Our approach leverages specialized AI agents, orchestrated via the Model Context Protocol (MCP), to continuously track and evolve an individual’s multi-dimensional …

Automating International Human Rights Adjudication, Veronika Fikfak, Laurence R. Helfer Jan 2025

Automating International Human Rights Adjudication, Veronika Fikfak, Laurence R. Helfer

Faculty Scholarship

International human rights courts and treaty bodies are increasingly turning to automated decision-making (“ADM”) technologies to expedite and enhance their review of individual complaints. These tribunals have yet to consider many of the legal, normative, and practical issues raised by the use of different types of automation technologies for these purposes. This article offers a comprehensive and balanced assessment of the benefits and challenges of introducing ADM into international human rights adjudication. We argue in favor of using ADM to digitize documents and for internal case management purposes and to make straightforward recommendations regarding registration, inadmissibility, and the calculation of …

Artificial Intelligence And Procedural Due Process, Brandon L. Garrett Jan 2025

Artificial Intelligence And Procedural Due Process, Brandon L. Garrett

Faculty Scholarship

Artificial intelligence (AI) violates procedural due process rights if the government uses it to deprive people of life, liberty, and property without adequate notice or an opportunity to be heard. A wide range of government agencies deploy AI systems, including in courts, law enforcement, public benefits administration, and national security. If the government refuses to disclose the reasons why it denied a person bail, public benefits, or immigration status, serious due process concerns arise. If the government delegates such tasks to an AI system, the due process analysis does not change. One asks whether a person received adequate notice and …

The Reliability Response To Patent Law’S Ai Challenges, Arti K. Rai Jan 2025

The Reliability Response To Patent Law’S Ai Challenges, Arti K. Rai

Faculty Scholarship

Pervasive AI use adds newfound importance to longstanding debates over patent timing and reliability. Patent claims on speculative ideas generated by AI, or even the infusion of speculative AI-generated ideas into the public domain, may defeat patent incentives for more careful research. Although challenges that AI use poses for patent validity requirements like human inventorship and nonobviousness have received more attention, reliability is equally important.

Indeed, as this Article argues, the issues are linked. If requirements for inventorship and nonobviousness were adjusted to emphasize reliability, a human role could be preserved, and AI use would not necessarily threaten patents. Currently, …

The Future Of Ai Regulation In Drug Development: A Comparative Analysis, Gabriela Lenarczyk, Timo Minssen, Nicholson Price, Arti Rai Jan 2025

The Future Of Ai Regulation In Drug Development: A Comparative Analysis, Gabriela Lenarczyk, Timo Minssen, Nicholson Price, Arti Rai

Faculty Scholarship

As artificial intelligence (AI) transforms drug development, regulatory frameworks are evolving to oversee its implementation, particularly at the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA). This paper makes three contributions to understanding emerging regulatory approaches. First, we offer a comparative analysis of how these agencies have responded to AI-driven advances, incorporating new US executive orders and the European Union (EU)’s AI Act. Second, we propose a novel analytical framework to understand regulatory divergence: the FDA’s flexible, dialog-driven model contrasts with the EMA’s structured, risk-tiered approach, reflecting broader institutional and political-economic differences. While the former encourages …

Information Retrieval In The Age Of Generative Ai: A Mismatch That Matters, Alex Zhang Jan 2025

Information Retrieval In The Age Of Generative Ai: A Mismatch That Matters, Alex Zhang

Faculty Scholarship

This short piece explores a widespread and yet underexamined or even overlooked misconception, that is, large language models (LLMs) function like traditional legal research databases. They do not. As a matter of fact, information retrieval from databases functions very differently from LLMs in terms of inputs, retrieval processes, and outputs. These differences have significant implications for transparency, traceability, and overall effectiveness in AI-driven legal research. Without intentional oversight and adaption, these changes could profoundly affect how we develop research skills and a cumulative knowledge base, both of which are essential skills for lifelong learning in the legal field.

A Two-Phase Learning Approach Integrated With Multi-Source Features For Cloud Service Qos Prediction, Fuzan Chen, Jing Yang, Haiyang Feng, Harris Wu, Minqiang Li

Information Technology & Decision Sciences Faculty Publications

Quality of Service (QoS) is a key factor for users when choosing cloud services. However, QoS values are often unavailable due to insufficient user evaluations or provider data. To address this, we propose a new QoS prediction method, Multi-source Feature Two-phase Learning (MFTL). MFTL incorporates multiple sources of features influencing QoS and uses a two-phase learning framework to make effective use of these features. In the first phase, coarse-grained learning is performed using a neighborhood-integrated matrix factorization model, along with a strategy for selecting high-quality neighbors for target users. In the second phase, reinforcement learning through a deep neural network …

A Spoofing Speech Detection Method Combining Multi-Scale Features And Cross-Layer Identification, Hongyan Yuan, Linjuan Zhang, Baoning Niu, Xianrong Zheng

Information Technology & Decision Sciences Faculty Publications

Pre-trained self-supervised speech models can extract general acoustic features, providing feature inputs for various speech downstream tasks. Spoofing speech detection, which is a pressing issue in the age of generative AI, requires both global information and local features of speech. The multi-layer transformer structure in pre-trained speech models can effectively capture temporal information and global context in speech, but there is still room for improvement in handling local features. To address this issue, a speech spoofing detection method that integrates multi-scale features and cross-layer information is proposed. Consider a Markovian tandem line with finite intermediate buffers and an equal number of stations and servers. Servers are flexible but noncollaborative, so that a job can be processed by at most one server at any time. When a job is being processed, it can be damaged and wasted depending on the proficiency of the server. We identify the dynamic server assignment policy that maximizes the long-run average throughput of the system with two stations and two servers. We find that the optimal policy is either a single or a double threshold policy on the number of jobs in the …

Development Of An Ecg-Based Deep Learning Model For Pediatric Congenital Heart Disease (Chd) Diagnosis, Annbar Mekouar

Selected Full-Text Master Theses 2021-

Congenital heart disease (CHD) stands as the leading congenital anomaly which affects pediatric populations throughout the world. The effectiveness of treatment depends on both early diagnosis and accurate identification but echocardiography requires manual interpretation which proves time-consuming and inconsistent especially when examining pediatric patients with their distinct cardiac systems. The research aims to create a deep learning-based diagnostic framework which uses ECG data to identify coronary artery disease subtypes in pediatric patients. The model uses high-quality datasets from Dr. Ignacio Lugones to extract R-R intervals and QRS durations through convolutional neural networks (CNNs). The system addresses pediatric-specific challenges while enhancing …

A Machine Learning Based Framework For Predicting Drug Cardiotoxicity Using A Combination Of Ecg Biomarkers And Drug Dosage Data, Jamie Wong Jan 2025

A Machine Learning Based Framework For Predicting Drug Cardiotoxicity Using A Combination Of Ecg Biomarkers And Drug Dosage Data, Jamie Wong

Selected Full-Text Master Theses 2021-

Drug-induced cardiotoxicity presents a significant challenge in clinical practice and drug clinical development, particularly with medications that modulate calcium, potassium, and sodium channels that influence cardiac electrophysiology. Clinical practice often relies on QTc prolongation alone as a predictor, which lacks specificity and may lead to excluding other safe therapeutic options. To address this limitation, this study integrates electrocardiogram (ECG) biomarkers with normalized drug dosage data to improve the accuracy of cardiotoxicity risk prediction using machine learning techniques. ECG features, including QT, QRS, RR, and PR intervals, were analyzed alongside normalized dosage data to account for dose-dependent cardiac effects. A physiologically …

Strategic Identification Of Prognostic Biomarkers For Knee Osteoarthritis Via Optimized Regression Techniques, Varun Sri Sai Vemuri Jan 2025

Strategic Identification Of Prognostic Biomarkers For Knee Osteoarthritis Via Optimized Regression Techniques, Varun Sri Sai Vemuri

Selected Full-Text Master Theses 2021-

Knee Osteoarthritis (KOA) is a progressive musculoskeletal disease involving cartilage matrix degradation, subchondral bone remodeling, and systemic inflammation, significantly impairing joint function and mobility. Existing KOA prediction models are not designed to account for nonlinear multimodal biomarker interactions or to integrate biochemical and imaging data, thus limiting their clinical utility. The current method for early detection and prediction of KOA disease progression is primarily based on machine learning-based approaches using radiographic imaging data, static feature selection, and deterministic outputs. These machine learning approaches often fail to capture the pathophysiology of KOA disease progression, which involves a complex cascade of processes, …
