Penetration Of Zigbee-Based Wireless Sensor Networks, Michael N. Johnstone, Jeremy A. Jarvis Jan 2011

Penetration Of Zigbee-Based Wireless Sensor Networks, Michael N. Johnstone, Jeremy A. Jarvis

Australian Information Warfare and Security Conference

Wireless Sensor Networks are becoming popular as a simple means of collecting data by public utilities, motor vehicle manufacturers and other organisations. Unfortunately the devices on such networks are often insecure by default, which presents problems in terms of the integrity of the data provided across those networks. This paper explores a range of attacks that were successful on a network consisting of nodes using the ZigBee protocol stack and proposes defences that can be put in place to circumvent these attacks thus leading to more secure systems and increasing user confidence.

Designing A Knowledge Distribution Simulator, Martin Hill, Graham Fletcher Jan 2011

Designing A Knowledge Distribution Simulator, Martin Hill, Graham Fletcher

Australian Information Warfare and Security Conference

To make good decisions, we need to be suitably informed. 'Good' and 'Suitably' in this case depend on the informational needs of the decision and the mechanisms of getting the information to the decision maker in time. The trade-offs in qualities, quantities, timeliness, impacts on other activities, and so on are infamously wickedly complex, and usually buried in a clutter of special circumstances, personality characteristics, environments unsuitable for study, and so on. Decision-making systems can be explored using case studies and exercises, but these are limited by the expense and time of using real people. A virtual simulator for large …

Development And Testing Of An Unmanned Aircraft System For Environmental Science, Jerald James Brady Jan 2011

Development And Testing Of An Unmanned Aircraft System For Environmental Science, Jerald James Brady

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

For some environmental science applications, Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UASs) are increasingly recognized for their capacity to collect remotely sensed data in a safer, more efficient and effective manner than is permitted with manned aircraft and satellite remote sensing platforms. To date, however, technological, human, and other challenges have constrained adoption of UASs in the environmental sciences. This study developed and tested a new UAS for an archetypical environmental science research group (stakeholder) composed of non-UAS experts. Specifically, this thesis: 1) Assessed the research and operational needs of the stakeholder to determine the optimum UAS platform; 2) Developed an Unmanned Aerial …

Intelligence Analysis And Threat Assessment: Towards A More Comprehensive Model Of Threat, Charles Vandepeer Jan 2011

Intelligence Analysis And Threat Assessment: Towards A More Comprehensive Model Of Threat, Charles Vandepeer

Australian Security and Intelligence Conference

A central focus of intelligence is the identification, analysis and assessment of threat. However, as acknowledged by intelligence practitioners, threat assessment lags behind the related field of risk assessment. This paper highlights how definitions of threat currently favoured by intelligence agencies are primarily based on threatening entities alone. Consequently, assessments of threat are almost singularly concerned with understanding an identified enemy’s intentions and capabilities. This ‘enemy-centric’ approach to intelligence analysis has recently come in for criticism. In particular, the shortcomings of the current approach become apparent where the focus of intelligence analysis is on threats from difficult-to-identify sub-state or non-state …

Security Aspects Of Sensor-Based Defence Systems, Michael N. Johnstone Jan 2011

Security Aspects Of Sensor-Based Defence Systems, Michael N. Johnstone

Australian Information Security Management Conference

The Australian Defence Force (ADF) has IMAP and JMAP to perform planning prior to the deployment of forces, but there is a knowledge gap for on-ground forces during the execution of an operation. Multi-agent based sensor systems can provide on-ground forces with a significant amount of real-time information that can be used to modify planning due to changed conditions. The issue with such sensor systems is the degree to which they are vulnerable to attack by opposing forces. This paper explores the types of attack that could be successful and proposes defences that could be put in place to circumvent …

Designing Cyber Warfare Information Infrastructure Resilience, Semir Daskapan, Jan Van Der Berg Jan 2011

Designing Cyber Warfare Information Infrastructure Resilience, Semir Daskapan, Jan Van Der Berg

Australian Information Warfare and Security Conference

Due to many cyber attacks in the last years, governments are realizing how vulnerable they have become should there be a break out of a cyberwar. This urged them to establish a cyber warfare information infrastructure in a short time. However, this cyber warfare information infrastructure relies heavily on public infrastructures, like electricity and the Internet, which will be most likely targeted themselves. Therefore, a cyber warfare information infrastructure is by definition a vulnerable infrastructure that needs to be secured against attacks and made resilient. In this paper, we provide a method inspired by the theory of Complex Adaptive Systems …

Analysis Of Key Installation Protection Using Computerized Red Teaming, Tirtha Ranjeet, Philip Hingston, Chiou Peng Lam, Martin Masek

Research outputs 2011

This paper describes the use of genetic algorithms (GAs) for computerized red teaming applications, to explore options for military plans in specific scenarios. A tool called Optimized Red Teaming (ORT) is developed and we illustrate how it may be utilized to assist the red teaming process in security organizations, such as military forces. The developed technique incorporates a genetic algorithm in conjunction with an agent-based simulation system (ABS) called MANA (Map Aware Non-uniform Automata). Both enemy forces (the red team) and friendly forces (the blue team) are modelled as intelligent agents in a multi-agent system and many computer simulations of …

Developing methods for ensuring the secure exchange of information is one of the oldest occupations in history. With the revolution in Information Technology, the need for securing information and the variety of methods that have been developed to do it has expanded rapidly. Much of the technology that forms the basis for many of the techniques used today was originally conceived for use in military communications and has since found a place in a wide range of industrial and commercial sectors. This has led to the development of certain industry standards that are compounded in specific data processing algorithms together …

High-Dimensional Objective-Based Data Farming, Zeng Fanchao, James Decraene, Malcolm Low, Wentong Cai, Suiping Zhou, Philip F. Hingston Jan 2011

High-Dimensional Objective-Based Data Farming, Zeng Fanchao, James Decraene, Malcolm Low, Wentong Cai, Suiping Zhou, Philip F. Hingston

Research outputs 2011

In objective-based data farming, decision variables of the Red Team are evolved using evolutionary algorithms such that a series of rigorous Red Team strategies can be generated to assess the Blue Team's operational tactics. Typically, less than 10 decision variables (out of 1000+) are selected by subject matter experts (SMEs) based on their past experience and intuition. While this approach can significantly improve the computing efficiency of the data farming process, it limits the chance of discovering “surprises” and moreover, data farming may be used only to verify SMEs' assumptions. A straightforward solution is simply to evolve all Red Team …

Security Risk Management: A Psychometric Map Of Expert Knowledge Structure, David Brooks

Research outputs 2011

The security industry operates within a diverse and multi-disciplined knowledge base, with risk management as a fundamental knowledge domain within security to mitigate its risks. Nevertheless, there has been limited research in understanding and mapping security expert knowledge structures within security risk management to consider if parts of security risk management are unique from more general risk management. This interpretive study applied a technique of multidimensional scaling (MDS) to develop and present a psychometric map within the knowledge domain of security risk management, validated with expert interviews. The psychometric MDS security risk management concept map presented the expert knowledge structure …

“Make A Bomb In Your Mums Kitchen”: Cyber Recruiting And Socialisation Of ‘White Moors’ And Home Grown Jihadists, Robyn Torok Nov 2010

“Make A Bomb In Your Mums Kitchen”: Cyber Recruiting And Socialisation Of ‘White Moors’ And Home Grown Jihadists, Robyn Torok

Australian Counter Terrorism Conference

As a consequence of the war on terror, al-Qaeda and associated jihad groups have evolved and made increasing use of internet technologies for cyber recruitment. Recently, there has been an increasing focus on recruiting home grown terrorists who can more easily escape the scrutiny of cross border entries. Case study analysis indicates that links do exist between cyber tools, radicalisation and terrorism, however, the strength and nature of these relationships is generally unclear. Evidence does seem to support that cyber tools are most significant in the initial phases of recruitment and radicalisation. Coupled with this is the strong evolution of …

Australian Critical Infrastructure Protection: A Case Of Two Tales, Matthew Warren, Graeme Pye, William Hutchinson Nov 2010

Australian Critical Infrastructure Protection: A Case Of Two Tales, Matthew Warren, Graeme Pye, William Hutchinson

Australian Information Warfare and Security Conference

The protection of critical infrastructures and the choices made in terms of priorities and cost, all impact upon the planning, precautions and security aspects of protecting these important systems. Often the when choices made is difficult to assess at the time the decision is taken and it is only after an incident that the truth of the choices made become fully evident. The paper focuses on two recent examples of Australian Critical Infrastructure protection and the issues that related to those examples.

Influence Operations: Action And Attitude, William Hutchinson Nov 2010

Influence Operations: Action And Attitude, William Hutchinson

Australian Information Warfare and Security Conference

This paper investigates the relationships between attitudes, behaviour and influence. The major objective of influence operations is predominantly to exert soft power and in doing this there is an assumption that it will change attitudes. It is assumed that by changing attitudes favourable to the influencer that behaviours will be changed. However, this is a problematic assumption. Influence operations whose messages seem to contradict the real behaviour of the influencer tends to nullify the message; and, in fact, might reinforce the attitudes and behaviours of the foe and begin to alienate friends. Messages should be based on a credible reality; …

Defining The Security Professional: Definition Through A Body Of Knowledge, Mel Griffiths, David J. Brooks, Jeffrey Corkill Nov 2010

Defining The Security Professional: Definition Through A Body Of Knowledge, Mel Griffiths, David J. Brooks, Jeffrey Corkill

Australian Security and Intelligence Conference

A subject that eludes a consensus definition, security is an amalgam of disciplines that is moving inexorably towards professionalisation. Yet identifying who or what defines a security professional remains as difficult and elusory as a comprehensive definition of security that captures all of its modern facets and many actors. The view of elevating such a discipline as security to the status of a profession provokes polarised opinions. This article reviews the literature, examining what elements identify a security professional and exploring the significant themes and issues. To support these elements, security experts (n=27) were surveyed using a multidimensional scaling technique …

International Relations And Cyber Attacks: Official And Unofficial Discourse, Kay Hearn, Patricia A H Williams, Rachel J. Mahncke

Australian Information Warfare and Security Conference

The potential for cyberwarfare is vast and is of concern to all nations, and national security defence. It appears that many countries are actively trying to protect their computer networks, whilst looking for ways that might bring down the networks of other countries, although this is not officially acknowledged. Bringing down another nations computer networks could give the attacking national intelligence and control. These kinds of interactions are now a part of the way in which international relations are played out, and the internet is also a place in which international relations are contested. As such the internet plays a …

2d Spatial Distributions For Measures Of Random Sequences Using Conjugate Maps, Qingping Li, Jeffrey Zhi J. Zheng

Australian Information Warfare and Security Conference

Advanced visual tools are useful to provide additional information for modern information warfare. 2D spatial distributions of random sequences play an important role to understand properties of complex sequences. This paper proposes time-sequences from a given logical function of 1D Cellular Automata in both Poincare map and conjugate map. Multiple measure sequences of Markov chains can be used to display spatial distributions using conjugate maps. Measure sequences recursively produced by different logical functions generating maps. Possible complementary feature exits between pair functions, Conjugate symmetry relationships between a pair of logical functions in conjugate maps can be observed.

Wikileaks: The Truth Or Not, Ian Rosewall, Matthew J. Warren

Australian Information Warfare and Security Conference

We live in the Information Age, an age where information is shared in a global context and in real time. The issue is whether all information should be disclosed. In the ‘Information Age’ do secrets still exist? Another major issue is whether groups of vigilantes are the ones who should be disclosing this information, should these vigilante groups be trusted? This paper will focus upon the impact of Wikileaks and the problem of Information disclosure especially when that information is confidential. It will identify cases for discussion. In the main these cases will be of a military flavour.

Information Warfare: Time For A Redefinition, Patricia A H Williams Nov 2010

Information Warfare: Time For A Redefinition, Patricia A H Williams

Australian Information Warfare and Security Conference

Information warfare has become an increasingly diverse field. The changes to its composition have been primarily driven by changes in technology and the resulting increased access to information. Further, it has been the progressively more diverse methods available for communication that has fuelled expanding applications for information warfare techniques into non-military environments. In order for younger generations of students to understand the place of information warfare in the larger security picture, there is a need to shift the emphasis from many of the military underpinnings to its relevance in modern society and the challenges in the commercial environment. This paper …

Hijacking User Uploads To Online Persistent Data Repositories For Covert Data Exfiltration, Curtis P. Barnard

Theses and Dissertations

As malware has evolved over the years, it has gone from harmless programs that copy themselves into other executables to modern day botnets that perform bank fraud and identity theft. Modern malware often has a need to communicate back to the author, or other machines that are also infected. Several techniques for transmitting this data covertly have been developed over the years which vary significantly in their level of sophistication. This research creates a new covert channel technique for stealing information from a network by piggybacking on user-generated network traffic. Specifically, steganography drop boxes and passive covert channels are merged …

Solving The Data Deluge Problem, Jens G. Pohl

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

The paper postulates that the information technology revolution that is commonly referred to as the Information Age is currently in a transition stage between data-processing and knowledge management that should be more aptly referred to as the Data Age. Symptoms of this transition stage are a data deluge problem that is evidenced by the inability of human computer-users to effectively analyze and draw useful conclusions from the overwhelming volume of data that is being collected, the increasing complexity of networked systems, and the acknowledged vulnerability of virtually all existing digital systems to cyber security threats.

The author suggests that the …

Current technologies for computer network and host defense do not provide suitable information to support strategic and tactical decision making processes. Although pattern-based malware detection is an active research area, the additional context of the type of malware can improve cyber situational awareness. This additional context is an indicator of threat capability thus allowing organizations to assess information losses and focus response actions appropriately. Malware Type Recognition (MaTR) is a research initiative extending detection technologies to provide the additional context of malware types using only static heuristics. Test results with MaTR demonstrate over a 99% accurate detection rate and 59% …

Change in our lives is an ongoing, complex, and difficult process that cannot be avoided, and in order for any organization comprised of people to be successful, change must be managed. There are many documented instances of organizations failing in their change efforts, and it is not always the technology that causes change failures, but it is the people aspect towards change that is neglected. This paper focuses on the ADKAR model which is a sequential and cumulative goal-oriented change management model with targeted results and consists of the elements Awareness, Desire, Knowledge, Ability, and Reinforcement, and how the model …

Handshaking Protocols And Jamming Mechanisms For Blind Rendezvous In A Dynamic Spectrum Access Environment, Aaron A. Gross Mar 2010

Handshaking Protocols And Jamming Mechanisms For Blind Rendezvous In A Dynamic Spectrum Access Environment, Aaron A. Gross

Theses and Dissertations

Blind frequency rendezvous is an important process for bootstrapping communications between radios without the use of pre-existing infrastructure or common control channel in a Dynamic Spectrum Access (DSA) environment. In this process, radios attempt to arrive in the same frequency channel and recognize each other’s presence in changing, under-utilized spectrum. This paper refines existing blind rendezvous techniques by introducing a handshaking algorithm for setting up communications once two radios have arrived in the same frequency channel. It then investigates the effect of different jamming techniques on blind rendezvous algorithms that utilize this handshake. The handshake performance is measured by determining …

Utilizing The Digital Fingerprint Method For Secure Key Generation, Jennifer C. Anilao

Theses and Dissertations

This research examines a new way to generate an uncloneable secure key by taking advantage of the delay characteristics of individual transistors. The user profiles the circuit to deduce the glitch count of each output line for each number of selectable buffers added to the circuit. The user can then use this information to generate a specific glitch count on each output line, which is passed to an encryption algorithm as its key. The results detail tests of two configurations for adding a selectable amount of buffers into each glitch circuit in order to induce additional delay. One configuration adds …
