This project involved the creation of an electronic gradebook designed to realistically meet the needs of classroom teachers. The computer source code was written in Pascal, a compiled language that allowed fast execution of any part of the program. The electronic gradebook called GradeS uses the graphic Desktop Intert'ace. It tracks up to 42 students per class, allowing up to 50 assignments per grading period. An unlimited number of classes can be stored on data disks. It produces four different types of whole class and individual student reports both on the screen and the printer. The project includes a report …

Adaptive Histogram Equalization, A Parallel Implementation, Charles W. Kurak Jr. Jan 1990

Adaptive Histogram Equalization, A Parallel Implementation, Charles W. Kurak Jr.

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Adaptive Histogram Equalization (AHE) has been recognized as a valid method of contrast enhancement. The main advantage of AHE is that it can provide better contrast in local areas than that achievable utilizing traditional histogram equalization methods. Whereas traditional methods consider the entire image, AHE utilizes a local contextual region.

However, AHE is computationally expensive, and therefore time-consuming. In this work two areas of computer science, image processing and parallel processing, are combined to produce an efficient algorithm. In particular, the AHE algorithm is implemented with a Multiple-Instruction-Multiple-Data (MIMD) parallel architecture. It is proposed that, as MIMD machines become more …

Computational Intelligence In Cad/Cam Applications, Chaman Sabharwal, Thomas G. Melson, Martin D. Fraser

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a fundamental, direct, and powerful approach to the surface/surface intersection problem in CAD/CAM applications. The algorithm is designed and implemented in three steps: a) Preprocessing- locate the potentially intersecting sections of the surfaces and decompose the surfaces into surface elements within specified flatness tolerance; b) Intersection- decompose the possibly intersecting pairs of surface elements into continuous surface triangulations to find the approximate intersections between the pairs of surface elements; c) Postprocessing-assemble the intersection primitives into curves of intersection, refine the accuracy of computed intersection points, and compact the intersection curves. This surface/surface intersection algorithm is applicable to …

The Development Of An Expert System For The Diagnosis Of Diseases In Fibre And Dairy Goats, Tim S. Roberts Jan 1990

The Development Of An Expert System For The Diagnosis Of Diseases In Fibre And Dairy Goats, Tim S. Roberts

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This thesis details the development of an expert system for the diagnosis of diseases in fibre and dairy goats. Divided into five sections, five appendices, and a bibliography, this thesis centres on the methods used to build the expert system: the decisions taken at the outset of, and during the course of, development; some of the problems encountered, and the solutions to those problems. A detailed appraisal is made of the development process and suggestions are made for future developments over similar domains (for example, the diagnosis of diseases in animals other than goats). Much emphasis is placed on three …

Trellis-Coded Multidimensional Phase Modulation, S. S. Pietrobon, Robert H. Deng Jan 1990

Trellis-Coded Multidimensional Phase Modulation, S. S. Pietrobon, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A 2L-dimensional multiple phase-shift keyed (L×MPSK) signal set is obtained by forming the Cartesian product of L two-dimensional MPSK signal sets. A systematic approach to partitioning L×MPSK signal sets that is based on block coding is used. An encoder system approach is developed. It incorporates the design of a differential precoder, a systematic convolutional encoder, and a signal set mapper. Trellis-coded L×4PSK, L×8PSK, and L×16PSK modulation schemes are found for 1⩽L⩽4 and a variety of code rates and decoder complexities, many of which are fully transparent to discrete phase rotations of the signal set. The new codes achieve asymptotic coding …

Parity Retransmission Hybrid Arq Using Rate 1/2 Convolutional Codes On A Nonstationary Channel, L. R. Lugand, D. J. Costello, Jr., Robert H. Deng Jul 1989

Parity Retransmission Hybrid Arq Using Rate 1/2 Convolutional Codes On A Nonstationary Channel, L. R. Lugand, D. J. Costello, Jr., Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A parity retransmission hybrid automatic repeat request (ARQ) scheme is proposed which uses rate 1/2 convolutional codes and Viterbi decoding. A protocol is described which is capable of achieving higher throughputs than previously proposed parity retransmission schemes. The performance analysis is based on a two-state Markov model of a nonstationary channel. This model constitutes a first approximation to a nonstationary channel. The two-state channel model is used to analyze the throughput and undetected error probability of the protocol presented when the receiver has both an infinite and a finite buffer size. It is shown that the throughput improves as the …

Towards A Bound For The Compression Of The Lzw Algorithm, Anoop Kumar Srivastava, Shinu Gupta May 1989

Towards A Bound For The Compression Of The Lzw Algorithm, Anoop Kumar Srivastava, Shinu Gupta

Theses

The LZW algorithm is a well known efficient adaptive compression algorithm. It is based on constructing a dictionary containing character strings from the text. A number of researchers have attempted to add variations to the original algorithm to achieve higher compression values. In this thesis we attempt to find a bound for the LZW approach. That is, we build a dictionary which gives maximum compression and satisfies prefix property of LZW algorithm.

In order to build such an optimum dictionary, the dynamic programming technique is applied. The final dictionary selected consists of entries which give maximum overall compression and also …

Scientific Computing In The Soviet Union, Seymour E. Goodman, William Mchenry, Peter Wolcott May 1989

Scientific Computing In The Soviet Union, Seymour E. Goodman, William Mchenry, Peter Wolcott

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications

In the last decade, the Soviet Union has placed increased emphasis on the development of high-speed computers and networks for use in scientific, economic, and military applications. When Communist Party General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev labeled supercomputer development a "top priority task for our science and economy" in April, 1987, he added new urgency to the production of machines that would both support activities in these applications and also serve as high-profile standard-bearers for perestroika, his program of restructuring and modernization for the nation. The Soviets have also undertaken some major projects in networking, including the creation of a nationwide packet-switched …

A Classification Approach For Automated Reasoning Systems--A Case Study In Graph Theory, Rong Lin Apr 1989

A Classification Approach For Automated Reasoning Systems--A Case Study In Graph Theory, Rong Lin

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

Reasoning systems which create classifications of structured objects face the problem of how object descriptions can be used to reflect their components as well as relations among these components. Current reasoning systems on graph theory do not adequately provide models to discover complex relations among mathematical concepts (eg: relations involving subgraphs) mainly due to the inability to solve this problem. This thesis presents an approach to construct a knowledge-based system, GC (Graph Classification), which overcomes this difficulty in performing automated reasoning in graph theory. We describe graph concepts based on an attribute called Linear Recursive Constructivity (LRC). LRC defines classes …

Method For Automatic Level Matching In A Local Network, In Particular A Multicomputer Arrangement, Comprising A Bus System Having Lightwaves Guides, For The Purpose Of Collision Recognition, Hans Thinschmidt, Franz J. Kurfess

Computer Science and Software Engineering

A method is disclosed for automatic level matching in a local network, particularly for a multicomputer arrangement, comprising an optical bus system, for the purpose of collision recognition. Given a required level matching, the process is executed such that a fundamental phase is provided in which level matching devices respectively individually assigned to the computers are synchronized with one another. A first matching phase is provided in which all level matching devices simultaneously execute a process for setting a reference voltage to the lowest received level, whereby the sum of all attenuation components of the signal path at the receiving …
