An Approach For Minimizing Spurious Errors In Testing Ada Tasking Programs, N. Mansouri, Amrit L. Goel
An Approach For Minimizing Spurious Errors In Testing Ada Tasking Programs, N. Mansouri, Amrit L. Goel
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Technical Reports
We propose an approach for detecting deadlocks and race conditions in Ada tasking software. It is based on an extension to Petri net-based techniques, where a concurrent program is modeled as a Petri net and a reachability graph is then derived and analyzed for desired information. In this approach, Predicate-Action subnets representing Ada programming constructs are described, where predicates and actions are attached to transitions. Predicates are those found in decision statements. Actions involve updating the status of the variables that affect the tasking behavior of the program and updating the Read and Write sets of shared variables. The shared …

Gateway Design For Lan Interconnection Via Isdn, Xian-Yu Zhang, Robert H. Deng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Recently, the use of bridges/gateways to interconnect physically distant local area networks (LANs) has become increasingly popular. There are various ways of connecting these bridges/gateways. ISDN is one of them and an attractive one. In this paper we discuss our work in the gateway design for interconnecting LANs via ISDN.

Robot Pedagogics: The Adaptation, Analysis, And Computer Control Of A Model Manipulator, Edward T. Hammerand, Chung You Ho
Computer Science Technical Reports
The subject of robotics is addressed by many different fields, among them computer science, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering. This work is an attempt to bring together all of these aspects from the perspective of a computer science background. Different techniques are considered and reconciled with one another in the analytical area, while detail and explanation are added in all areas that were not previously available. In addition, geometrical interpretations arc presented for concepts that have heretofore been presented only in the form of equations.

BEEFIN is a computer model (Barker et at. 1986) that calculates profit maximizing diets for finishing cattle to a specified carcass weight and fat thickness. It predicts cattle growth, feed conversion ratio, final liveweight, number of days on feed and amount of available feedstuffs to finish the cattle to specification.
BEEFIN calculates an enterprise profit and loss budget and performs a sensitivity analysis on cattle and feed price changes. A sensitivity analysis of returns to assets, variable costs and per tonne of feed fed is also calculated.
Ctran: Transforming Scientific Fortran Programs To Unix Based Computing Environments, Qi Chen
Ctran: Transforming Scientific Fortran Programs To Unix Based Computing Environments, Qi Chen
Masters Theses
FORTRAN is one of the most popular scientific programming languages. The efficiency, rich libraries, and popularity of FORTRAN support its continued use as a programming language for scientific computing in the near future. However, in current multiprocessor UNIX environments, C is often better supported. The desire to use existing FORTRAN subroutines within such a C environment leads to several options. In this thesis, we introduce a "modern" scientific programming language called CTRAN for this purpose.
We begin with a brief review of the history of scientific programming languages. An introduction of CTRAN is given in Chapter HI. In Chapter IV, …

Sql/Ds, Ingres And Indexes: A Comparative Study Of The Use Of Indexes In Two Database Systems, Karen L. Bourn
Sql/Ds, Ingres And Indexes: A Comparative Study Of The Use Of Indexes In Two Database Systems, Karen L. Bourn
Masters Theses
Many people in data processing desire to know more about the performance of relational databases. Little information about performance exists in the product or public literature. The purpose of this study is to compare one aspect of the performance of relational databases. The aspect explored is the indexing of tables in a relational database. This paper compares the use of indexing in two relational databases, SQL/DS (Ver. 2, Rel. 1) and INGRES (Rel. 5.0/0.6). Queries were created and executed on tables in both databases, first without an index and then with several different indexes.
The findings in this study show …

Visual Protocol Collection For The Enhancement Of The Radiological Diagnostic Process, Erika Rogers, Ronald C. Arkin, M. Baron, N. Ezquerra, E. Garcia
Computer Science and Software Engineering
This paper describes the Observation Phase of a research project that is designed to explore the nature of visual radiological diagnosis. It is concerned with the collection and analysis of visual protocol data in an effort to determine the salient image features that may impact on the different stages of the diagnostic process, both perceptual and cognitive. These features, once identified, will lead to the formulation of image enhancement hypotheses and the development of knowledge-based visualization techniques to assist the radiological diagnostic process.

A Logic Grammar Foundation For Document Representation And Document Layout, Allen Brown Jr., Howard A. Blair
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Technical Reports
We present a powerful grammar-based paradigm for electronic document markup: coordinated definite clause translation grammars. This markup is of a declarative character, being, in effect, a collection of constraints on the logical and physical structure of documents. To the best of our knowledge, coordinated grammars and their parsers can accommodate all of the descriptive and layout processing functionality enjoyed by extant electronic markup languages. We describe an operational prototype that demonstrates the feasibility of a syntax-directed basis for formalizing and realizing document layout.

Introductory Dataperfect® Instruction, Frances Jenson Larsen
Theses and Dissertations
The project should be used in a beginning computer class. These units contain projects from simple to complex. The first instructional unit uses a database that comes with the DataPerfect® program. The students build and manipulate a small database. Reports are prepared, and finally the students design an original database. These instructional units are intended to be used in a high school classroom with the DataPerfect® computer program. DataPerfect® is a copyrighted program marketed by WordPerfect Corporation of Orem, Utah.
Diagnostics Software For Concurrent Processing Computer Systems, Robert L. Jones Iii
Diagnostics Software For Concurrent Processing Computer Systems, Robert L. Jones Iii
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Diagnostics software for analyzing ATAMM based concurrent processing systems is presented in this thesis. ATAMM (Algorithm to Architecture Mapping Model) is a new model developed by researchers at Old Dominion University and the NASA-Langley Research Center. ATAMM is capable of modeling the execution of large grain algorithms on distributed data flow architectures. Investigating a real or simulated ATAMM based system requires the aid of software tools. The software tool presented in this thesis can evaluate the behavior and performance of an ATAMM based system. The tool graphically portrays algorithm activities and processor activities. The tool's measurement capabilities indicate computing speed, …
A Fast O(K) Multicast Message Routing Algorithm, Thomas J. Sager, Bruce M. Mcmillin
A Fast O(K) Multicast Message Routing Algorithm, Thomas J. Sager, Bruce M. Mcmillin
Computer Science Technical Reports
In many multicomputer applications is it necessary for one node to send an identical message to many nodes. One to many communications are called multicasts. Although broadcasts (one to all) and unicasts (one to one) have been widely implemented, multicasts, in spite of their importance to efficient use of multicomputer systems, have not received much attention.
Minimal traffic multicasting is equivalent to the minimal Steiner tree problem and is known to be NP-complete. Therefore, a heuristic polynomial time approximation must be used; but, to take advantage of advances in second generation multicomputer hardware such as wormhole routing, a distributed multicast …
