Simulation Of A Video-On-Demand System, Song Bac Toh Jun 1995

Simulation Of A Video-On-Demand System, Song Bac Toh

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

This paper presents a simulation study of a video-on-demand system. The focus of the study is the effectiveness of different caching strategies on a video-on-demand system with two levels of cache, RAM and disks, in front of a tape library. Using an event-driven simulator, I show that caching was helpful in increasing the service capacity of the system. On-demand caching showed its advantages especially when the requests were clustered around a few popular titles (in other words, there was temporal locality).

In this paper, we discuss gigabit network applications enabled by "Mission to Planet Earth," an international effort to monitor the Earth as a system. We describe the design of a network architecture to support applications developed as part of this program; introduce a new component, public access resource centers (PARC9s); and discuss how PARC's would facilitate access by users outside the traditional research community. We also describe how a particular class of users, agriculture users, might to Planet Earth program and delivered in a value-added form to them by a so-called AgPARC. The suggested architecture requires the deployment of high-bandwidth …

A Meta-Interpreter For Circuit-Extraction, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan May 1995

A Meta-Interpreter For Circuit-Extraction, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan

Kno.e.sis Publications

The design of a VLSI circuit consists of a description of the circuit in terms of its components and subcomponents, at various levels of detail. To verify that the layout of a VLSI circuit conforms to its design, one needs to work backwards from the lowest-level description of the circuit and recognize the higher-level components it constitutes. This paper is concerned with the application of logic programming techniques in the formal verification of the structural correctness of the VLSI circuit layouts. In particular, we review Michael Dukes' Generalized Extraction System (1990) that compiles design descriptions into a set of extraction …

An Evaluation Of Design Tradeoffs In A High Performance Media-On-Demand Server, Divyesh Jadav, Chutimet Srinilta, Alok Choudhary, P. B. Berra

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

One of the key components of a multi-user multimedia-on-demand system is the data server. Digitalization of traditionally analog data such as video and audio, and the feasibility of obtaining network bandwidths above the gigabit-per-second range are two important advances that have made possible the realization, in the near future, of interactive distributed multimedia systems. Secondary-to-main memory I/O technology has not kept pace with advances in networking, main memory and CPU processing power. Consequently, the performance of the server has a direct bearing on the overall performance of such a system. In this paper we present a high-performance solution to the …

Knowledge-Based Image Enhancement For Cooperative Tele-Assistance, Erika Rogers, Versonya Dupont, Robin R. Murphy, Nazir Warsi

Computer Science and Software Engineering

There is an increasing need in complex environments for computerized assistance, both for the effective filtering and display of pertinent information or data, and also for the decision-making task itself. The combination of artificial intelligence techniques with image processing and graphics capabilities provides the foundation for building intelligent systems which act as mediaries between the human and the task domain. In the field of tele-assistance, this type of system enables cooperative problem-solving between a remote semi-autonomous robot and a local human supervisor. This paper describes current work on such a system, with an emphasis on the development of knowledge-based image …

Nonrecursive Incremental Evaluation Of Datalog Queries, Guozhu Dong, Jianwen Su, Rodney Topor Jan 1995

Nonrecursive Incremental Evaluation Of Datalog Queries, Guozhu Dong, Jianwen Su, Rodney Topor

Kno.e.sis Publications

We consider the problem of repeatedly evaluating the same (computationally expensive) query to a database that is being updated between successive query requests. In this situation, it should be possible to use the difference between successive database states and the answer to the query in one state to reduce the cost of evaluating the query in the next state. We use nonrecursive Datalog (which are unions of conjunctive queries) to compute the differences, and call this process “incremental query evaluation using conjunctive queries”. After formalizing the notion of incremental query evaluation using conjunctive queries, we give an algorithm that constructs, …

A Taxonomy Of Workgroup Computing Applications, Warren Von Worley Jan 1995

A Taxonomy Of Workgroup Computing Applications, Warren Von Worley

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

The goal of workgroup computing is to help individuals and groups efficiently perform a wide range of functions on networked computer systems (Ellis, Gibbs, & Rein, 1991). Early workgroup computing tools were designed for limited functionality and group interaction (Craighill, 1992). Current workgroup computing applications do not allow enough control of group processes and they provide little correlation between various workgroup computing application areas (Rodden and Blair, 1991). An integrated common architecture may produce more effective workgroup computing applications. Integrating common support functions into a common framework will avoid duplication of these functions for each workgroup computing application (Pastor & …

Error Control For Continuous Media And Multipoint Applications, Christos Papadopoulos, Guru Parulkar Jan 1995

Error Control For Continuous Media And Multipoint Applications, Christos Papadopoulos, Guru Parulkar

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

High-bandwidth multimedia applications pose new challenges to error control. These include the support of error control for Continuous Media (CM) streams and the scalable support of error control in multipoint applications where the number of participants is large. Current error control mechanisms provide no support for the above applications. In this report we present new error control mechanisms that provide the required support. Continuous media applications have strict timing requirements which greatly affect recovery. To support continuous media applications we have designed and implemented a point-to-point error control mechanism which features the following: (1) selective repeat retransmission, (2) conditional retransmission, …

The Use Of The National Information Infrastructure And High Performance Computers In Industry, Geoffrey C. Fox, Wojtek Furmanski Jan 1995

The Use Of The National Information Infrastructure And High Performance Computers In Industry, Geoffrey C. Fox, Wojtek Furmanski

Northeast Parallel Architecture Center

We divide potential NII (National Information Infrastructure) services into five broad areas: Collaboration and televirtuality; InfoVISiON (Information, Video, Imagery, and Simulation on Demand), and digital libraries; commerce; metacomputing; WebTop productivity services. The latter denotes the broad suite of tools we expect to be offered on the Web in a general environment we term WebWindows. We review current and future World Wide Web technologies, which could underlie these services. In particular, we suggest an integration framework WebWork for High Performance (parallel and distributed) computing and the NII. We point out that pervasive WebWork and WebWindows technologies will enable, facilitate and substantially …

High Performance Distributed Computing, Geoffrey C. Fox Jan 1995

High Performance Distributed Computing, Geoffrey C. Fox

Northeast Parallel Architecture Center

High Performance Distributed Computing (HPDC) is driven by the rapid advance of two related technologies -- those underlying computing and communications, respectively. These technology pushes are linked to application pulls, which vary from the use of a cluster of some 20 workstations simulating fluid flow around an aircraft, to the complex linkage of several hundred million advanced PCs around the globe to deliver and receive multimedia information. The review of base technologies and exemplar applications is followed by a brief discussion of software models for HPDC, which are illustrated by two extremes -- PVM and the conjectured future World Wide …

A Portable Computer System For Recording Heart Sounds And Data Modeling Using A Backpropagation Neural Network, Erik Mark Hudson Jan 1995

A Portable Computer System For Recording Heart Sounds And Data Modeling Using A Backpropagation Neural Network, Erik Mark Hudson

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Cardiac auscultation is the primary tool used by cardiologists to diagnose heart problems. Although effective, auscultation is limited by the effectiveness of human hearing. Digital sound technology and the pattern classification ability of neural networks may offer improvements in this area. Digital sound technology is now widely available on personal computers in the form of sound cards. A good deal of research over the last fifteen years has shown that neural networks can excel in diagnostic problem solving. To date, most research involving cardiology and neural networks has focussed on ECG pattern classification. This thesis explores the prospects of recording …

Optimizing Object Invocation Using Optimistic Incremental Specialization, Jon Inouye, Andrew P. Black, Charles Consel, Calton Pu, Jonathan Walpole Jan 1995

Optimizing Object Invocation Using Optimistic Incremental Specialization, Jon Inouye, Andrew P. Black, Charles Consel, Calton Pu, Jonathan Walpole

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

To make object invocation efficient, it is important to minimize overhead. In general, overhead is incurred in order to maintain transparency; with the advent of mobile computer systems, persistence, increasing security and privacy concerns, transparency becomes more expensive and overhead is increasing. Invocation mechanisms maintain transparency by finding objects, choosing communication media, performing data translation into common formats (e.g., XDR), marshalling arguments, encrypting confidential data, etc. Performing all of these operations on every invocation would lead to unacceptable performance, so designers often avoid operations by specializing object invocation for more restricted environments. For example, the Emerald compiler performs several optimizations …

Space Modeler: An Expanded, Distributed, Virtual Environment For Space Visualization, John C. Vanderburgh Dec 1994

Space Modeler: An Expanded, Distributed, Virtual Environment For Space Visualization, John C. Vanderburgh

Theses and Dissertations

The Space Modeler is the first truly immersive virtual environment that models the solar system, models satellites in near-Earth orbit, and can operate in a Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) environment. It increases the capabilities of the 1993 Satellite Modeler by expanding the physical limits of the environment and by implementing a new three-dimensional user interface. Satellite orbits are modeled using NASA two line element sets. The positions of the Sun, Moon and planets are computed using an algorithm based on planetary orbital element sets using a linear polynomial fit. For higher precision, the planetary orbits can be computed using an …

Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation And Head Motion Tracking In A Virtual Environment: An Engineering Approach, James E. Russell Dec 1994

Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation And Head Motion Tracking In A Virtual Environment: An Engineering Approach, James E. Russell

Theses and Dissertations

Software engineering tools and techniques were applied to design and implement an application that reduces lag typically present in virtual environment displays. The application was a Multiple Model Adaptive Estimator (MMAE), composed of three Kalman filters, that predicted head orientation one sample period into the future. The environment rendering software used these predictions to generate the environment display. Each of the filters in the MMAE was designed for a different assumed head motion type (benign, moderate, or heavy), which allowed the MMAE to adapt to changes in head movement characteristics. The use of Ada 9X as an implementation language for …

The "Infoharness" Information Integration Platform, Leon Shklar, Satish Thatte, Howard Marcus, Amit P. Sheth Oct 1994

The "Infoharness" Information Integration Platform, Leon Shklar, Satish Thatte, Howard Marcus, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

The "InfoHarness" information integration platform, tools, and services being developed at Bellcore are aimed at providing integrated and rapid access to huge amounts of heterogeneous information independent of the type, representation, and location of information. InfoHarness provides advanced search and browsing capabilities without imposing the burden of restructuring, reformatting or relocating information on information suppliers or creators. This is achieved through object-oriented encapsulation of information and the associated meta-information (e.g., type, location, access rights, owner, creation date, etc.). The meta-information extraction methods ensure rapid and largely automatic creation of information repositories. A gateway that supports access to InfoHarness repositories from …
