Navigating Generative Ai In Honors, Anne Dotter, Victoria M. Bryan
Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive
Considering the historical significance and pedagogical impact of educational technologies on teaching and learning in higher education, authors suggest that generative artificial intelligence creates more questions than solutions for honors practitioners. What might meaningful AI literacy look like throughout a multidisciplinary honors curriculum? To what extent will generative AI level educational inequities, or create new ones? If policing AI misuse is ultimately a losing battle, how might this understanding reshape assignment design, assessment practices, and even our definitions of academic dishonesty? Drawing on examples in current teaching practice, authors observe the two sides of generative AI—one holding powerful possibilities for …

Teaching Ai Literacy Through Science Studies, Rhetoric, And Ethical Reasoning, Michael J. Klein, Philip L. Frana
Teaching Ai Literacy Through Science Studies, Rhetoric, And Ethical Reasoning, Michael J. Klein, Philip L. Frana
Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive
Building on the idea of productive troublemaking, this essay presents a team-taught interdisciplinary honors course that integrates science and technology studies, rhetorical analysis, ethical reasoning, and artificial intelligence policy. Rather than framing AI as a threat, this course invites honors students to experiment with AI technologies and develop competencies by analyzing AI as a social and subjectivity-shaping phenomenon—writing policy briefs, producing rhetorical analyses of science fiction, and completing self-paced AI literacy modules. Honors education is uniquely positioned to model responsible and human-centered uses of intelligent systems, thereby cultivating graduates who can both use and critically interrogate the AI tools that …
Honoring Intellectual Risk-Taking: A Dialogue, Julie Bowman, Alexis Teagarden
Honoring Intellectual Risk-Taking: A Dialogue, Julie Bowman, Alexis Teagarden
Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive
Presented in the form of a Socratic dialogue, this piece considers what honors courses should strive to teach. Bowman, an experienced instructor of both non-honors and honors classes, notes that while universities’ honors colleges prize intellectual curiosity, her honors students might not. Teagarden, the other interlocutor and a writing program administrator, wonders whether curiosity is a sufficient end goal for honors or any teaching. The speakers turn to whether curiosity or courage is the more important virtue to instill, explore a classical difference between courage and audacity, and then discuss whether and how courage could be taught.

Generative Ai And The Honors Thesis: A Rhetorical Framework For Gai Policy, Pedagogy, And Equity, Sean Chadwick
Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive
This article offers a rhetorical framework for understanding how honors students engage with the capstone thesis following the emergence of generative AI (GAI) tools. Author reviews the nature of the honors thesis and analyzes some rhetorical models for thinking about GAI and literacy before offering a heuristic framework identifying four interdependent skill categories—writing, social, executive, and subject matter—that shape students’ thesis work. Drawing on findings from an interview study, this framework clarifies how GAI tools interface with existing thesis practices and pain points, allowing honors practitioners to better articulate our values, evaluate use cases, and craft GAI-informed policy. As a …
A Study Of Conceptual Primitive Elimination: Embedding Ingest Into Ptrans, Jamie C. Macbeth, Alexis Kilayko
A Study Of Conceptual Primitive Elimination: Embedding Ingest Into Ptrans, Jamie C. Macbeth, Alexis Kilayko
Computer Science: Faculty Publications
In cognitive systems and cognitive linguistics, primitive decomposition systems attempt to explain cognitive phenomena by breaking things down into conceptual building blocks and provide rich and flexible representations for systems. A prime example is the Schank–Minsky Conceptual Dependency Trans-frames system, which maintains a commitment to keeping the number of primitives small and allowing them to be combined in complex ways in representing meaning, knowledge, and dynamic episodic memory. Motivated by the desire to keep the set of primitives small, this paper describes an effort to eliminate the Conceptual Dependency INGEST primitive and reconstitute its uses through combinations of the CD …
An Argument Against Gradual Type Systems In Programming Language Semantics, Natalie Lau
An Argument Against Gradual Type Systems In Programming Language Semantics, Natalie Lau
LMU Theses and Dissertations
In 2006, Jeremy Siek and Walid Taha formalized the concept of gradual type systems, which integrates static and dynamic typing in a single programming language. This allows the programmer to statically or dynamically type portions of their code at will, which offers more flexibility than languages that require all code to be statically typed. Despite the added convenience, gradual typing comes with its own set of tradeoffs, and researchers have been debating whether the drawbacks of integrating static and dynamic types outweigh its benefits. This thesis builds off of previous research to investigate the advantages and disadvantages of using a …

Video Large Language Models (Video-LLMs) have made remarkable progress in video understanding tasks. However, they are constrained by the maximum length of input tokens, making it impractical to input entire videos. Existing frame selection approaches, such as uniform frame sampling and text-frame retrieval, fail to account for the information density variations in the videos or the complex instructions in the tasks, leading to sub-optimal performance. In this paper, we propose Frame-Voyager that learns to query informative frame combinations, based on the given textual queries in the task. To train Frame-Voyager, we introduce a new data collection and labeling pipeline, by …

The in-context learning (ICL) capability of large language models (LLMs) enables them to perform challenging tasks using provided demonstrations. However, ICL is highly sensitive to the ordering of demonstrations, leading to instability in predictions. This paper shows that this vulnerability can be exploited to design a natural attack - difficult for model providers to detect - that achieves nearly 80% success rate on LLaMA-3 by simply permuting the demonstrations. Existing mitigation methods primarily rely on post-processing and fail to enhance the model's inherent robustness to input permutations, raising concerns about safety and reliability of LLMs. To address this issue, we …

Large language models (LLMs) often exhibit hallucinations, producing incorrector outdated knowledge. Hence, model editing methods have emerged to enabletargeted knowledge updates. To achieve this, a prevailing paradigm is the locatingthen-editing approach, which first locates influential parameters and then edits themby introducing a perturbation. While effective, current studies have demonstrated that this perturbation inevitably disrupt the originally preserved knowledge within LLMs, especially in sequential editing scenarios. To address this, we introduce AlphaEdit, a novel solution that projects perturbation onto the null space of the preserved knowledge before applying it to the parameters. We theoretically prove that this projection ensures the output …

Large Language Models (LLMs) generating unsafe responses to toxic prompts is a significant issue in their applications. While various efforts aim to address this safety concern, previous approaches often demand substantial human data collection or rely on the less dependable option of using another LLM to generate corrective data. In this paper, we aim to take this problem and overcome limitations of requiring significant high-quality human data. Our method requires only a small set of unsafe responses to toxic prompts, easily obtained from the unsafe LLM itself. By employing a semantic cost combined with a negative Earth Mover Distance (EMD) …

Experimental evaluations of software engineering innovations, e.g., tools and processes, often include human-subject studies as a component of a multi-pronged strategy to obtain greater generalizability of the findings. However, human-subject studies in our field are challenging, due to the cost and difficulty of finding and employing suitable subjects, ideally, professional programmers with varying degrees of experience. Meanwhile, large language models (LLMs) have recently started to demonstrate human-level performance in several areas. This paper explores the possibility of substituting costly human subjects with much cheaper LLM queries in evaluations of code and code-related artifacts. We study this idea by applying six …

This paper aims to efficiently enable large language models (LLMs) to use external knowledge and goal guidance in conversational recommender system (CRS) tasks. Advanced LLMs (e.g., ChatGPT) are limited in domain-specific CRS tasks for 1) generating grounded responses with recommendation-oriented knowledge, or 2) proactively leading the conversations through different dialogue goals. In this work, we first analyze those limitations through a comprehensive evaluation, showing the necessity of external knowledge and goal guidance which contribute significantly to the recommendation accuracy and language quality. In light of this finding, we propose a novel ChatCRS framework to decompose the complex CRS task into …

General virtual agents need to handle multimodal observations, master complex action spaces, and self-improve in dynamic, open-domain environments. However, existing environments are often domain-specific and require complex setups, which limits agent development and evaluation in real-world settings. As a result, current evaluations lack in-depth analyses that decompose fundamental agent capabilities. We introduce AgentStudio, a trinity of environments, tools, and benchmarks to address these issues. AgentStudio provides a lightweight, interactive environment with highly generic observation and action spaces, e.g., video observations and GUI/API actions. It integrates tools for creating online benchmark tasks, annotating GUI elements, and labeling actions in videos. Based …

Fuzzy-Virtual Inertia Control To Improve The Frequency Response Of Multi-Area Power Systems, Nourelhouda Djaraf, Yacine Daili, Abderrahim Zemmit, Abdelghani Harrag
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Virtual inertia control (VIC) is essential for power systems dominated by electronic devices to compensate for the lack of inertia and ensure frequency regulation. However, most existing VICs often focus solely on optimizing the virtual inertia parameter to adapt to the high penetration of renewable energy sources (RESs) without considering the damping factor. This oversight can lead to significant fluctuations and power mismatches, especially in interconnected systems where the coordination between MGs is sensitive and essential, and there is a risk of propagation of deviations between MGs, which makes the control more complex. To address these issues, this paper presents …

Abstract: To address problems such as the premature phenomenon in the three-way clustering algorithm caused by the random selection of initial cluster centers and the need for repeated experiments to determine the value of q in the q-nearest neighbor concept, a three-way clustering algorithm optimized by a variant of the firefly algorithm is proposed. The firefly algorithm is employed to solve the problem of sensitivity to initial cluster centers. The target function value is taken as the brightness intensity of firefly to search the clustering center point, and the optimal solution is taken as the clustering center of the algorithm …

Examining Intersectional Queer Biases In Large Language Models: A Combined Statistical And Visual-Qualitative Approach For Quantification And Explanation, Huu Duong (Chip) Nguyen
Computer Science Senior Theses
Despite significant advancements in research on (intersectional) social biases in Large Language Models (LLMs), intersectional biases affecting subgroups within the LGBTQ+ community remain critically understudied. Existing bias detection methodologies often prioritize quantification but lack depth in explaining the specific stereotypes/biases that shape evaluation metrics. To address these gaps, this study proposes a combined statistical and visual-qualitative approach to quantify and identify persistent intersectional queer biases in five recent, state-of-the-art LLMs through a downstream story generation task. Findings from analysis uncover substantial evidence of stereotypes that perpetuate harmful, reductive narratives against intersectionally marginalized groups within the LGBTQ+ community. To promote public …

Leveraging Large Language Models For Knowledge-Free Weak Supervision In Clinical Natural Language Processing, Enshuo Hsu, Kirk Roberts
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
The performance of deep learning-based natural language processing systems is based on large amounts of labeled training data which, in the clinical domain, are not easily available or affordable. Weak supervision and in-context learning offer partial solutions to this issue, particularly using large language models (LLMs), but their performance still trails traditional supervised methods with moderate amounts of gold-standard data. In particular, inferencing with LLMs is computationally heavy. We propose an approach leveraging fine-tuning LLMs and weak supervision with virtually no domain knowledge that still achieves consistently dominant performance. Using a prompt-based approach, the LLM is used to generate weakly-labeled …
