Contrastive Video Question Answering Via Video Graph Transformer, Junbin Xiao Xiao, Pan Zhou, Angela Yao, Yicong Li, Richang Hong, Shuicheng Yan, Tat-Seng Chua Jul 2023

Contrastive Video Question Answering Via Video Graph Transformer, Junbin Xiao Xiao, Pan Zhou, Angela Yao, Yicong Li, Richang Hong, Shuicheng Yan, Tat-Seng Chua

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We propose to perform video question answering (VideoQA) in a Contrastive manner via a Video Graph Transformer model (CoVGT). CoVGT’s uniqueness and superiority are three-fold: 1) It proposes a dynamic graph transformer module which encodes video by explicitly capturing the visual objects, their relations and dynamics, for complex spatio-temporal reasoning. 2) It designs separate video and text transformers for contrastive learning between the video and text to perform QA, instead of multi-modal transformer for answer classification. Fine-grained video-text communication is done by additional cross-modal interaction modules. 3) It is optimized by the joint fully- and self-supervised contrastive objectives between the …

Discriminative Reasoning With Sparse Event Representation For Document-Level Event-Event Relation Extraction, Changsen Yuan, Heyan Huang, Yixin Cao, Yonggang Wen Jul 2023

Discriminative Reasoning With Sparse Event Representation For Document-Level Event-Event Relation Extraction, Changsen Yuan, Heyan Huang, Yixin Cao, Yonggang Wen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Document-level Event-Event Relation Extraction (DERE) aims to extract relations between events in a document. It challenges conventional sentence-level task (SERE) with difficult long-text understanding. In this paper, we propose a novel DERE model (SENDIR) for better document-level reasoning. Different from existing works that build an event graph via linguistic tools, SENDIR does not require any prior knowledge. The basic idea is to discriminate event pairs in the same sentence or span multiple sentences by assuming their different information density: 1) low density in the document suggests sparse attention to skip irrelevant information. Our module 1 designs various types of attention …

Large-Scale Correlation Analysis Of Automated Metrics For Topic Models, Jia Peng Lim, Hady Wirawan Lauw Jul 2023

Large-Scale Correlation Analysis Of Automated Metrics For Topic Models, Jia Peng Lim, Hady Wirawan Lauw

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Automated coherence metrics constitute an important and popular way to evaluate topic models. Previous works present a mixed picture of their presumed correlation with human judgement. In this paper, we conduct a large-scale correlation analysis of coherence metrics. We propose a novel sampling approach to mine topics for the purpose of metric evaluation, and conduct the analysis via three large corpora showing that certain automated coherence metrics are correlated. Moreover, we extend the analysis to measure topical differences between corpora. Lastly, we examine the reliability of human judgement by conducting an extensive user study, which is designed as an amalgamation …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The rapid development of aspect-based sentiment analysis (ABSA) within recent decades shows great potential for real-world society. The current ABSA works, however, are mostly limited to the scenario of a single text piece, leaving the study in dialogue contexts unexplored. To bridge the gap between fine-grained sentiment analysis and conversational opinion mining, in this work, we introduce a novel task of conversational aspect-based sentiment quadruple analysis, namely DiaASQ, aiming to detect the quadruple of target-aspect-opinion-sentiment in a dialogue. We manually construct a large-scale high-quality DiaASQ dataset in both Chinese and English languages. We deliberately develop a neural model to benchmark …

Multi-Target Backdoor Attacks For Code Pre-Trained Models, Yanzhou Li, Shangqing Liu, Kangjie Chen, Xiaofei Xie, Tianwei Zhang, Yang Liu Jul 2023

Multi-Target Backdoor Attacks For Code Pre-Trained Models, Yanzhou Li, Shangqing Liu, Kangjie Chen, Xiaofei Xie, Tianwei Zhang, Yang Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Backdoor attacks for neural code models have gained considerable attention due to the advancement of code intelligence. However, most existing works insert triggers into task-specific data for code-related downstream tasks, thereby limiting the scope of attacks. Moreover, the majority of attacks for pre-trained models are designed for understanding tasks. In this paper, we propose task-agnostic backdoor attacks for code pre-trained models. Our backdoored model is pre-trained with two learning strategies (i.e., Poisoned Seq2Seq learning and token representation learning) to support the multi-target attack of downstream code understanding and generation tasks. During the deployment phase, the implanted backdoors in the victim …

Augmenting Low-Resource Text Classification With Graph-Grounded Pre-Training And Prompting, Zhihao Wen, Yuan Fang Jul 2023

Augmenting Low-Resource Text Classification With Graph-Grounded Pre-Training And Prompting, Zhihao Wen, Yuan Fang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

ext classification is a fundamental problem in information retrieval with many real-world applications, such as predicting the topics of online articles and the categories of e-commerce product descriptions. However, low-resource text classification, with few or no labeled samples, poses a serious concern for supervised learning. Meanwhile, many text data are inherently grounded on a network structure, such as a hyperlink/citation network for online articles, and a user-item purchase network for e-commerce products. These graph structures capture rich semantic relationships, which can potentially augment low-resource text classification. In this paper, we propose a novel model called Graph-Grounded Pre-training and Prompting (G2P2) …

Information Screening Whilst Exploiting! Multimodal Relation Extraction With Feature Denoising And Multimodal Topic Modeling, Shengqiong Wu, Hao Fei, Yixin Cao, Lidong Bing, Tat-Seng Chua Jul 2023

Information Screening Whilst Exploiting! Multimodal Relation Extraction With Feature Denoising And Multimodal Topic Modeling, Shengqiong Wu, Hao Fei, Yixin Cao, Lidong Bing, Tat-Seng Chua

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Existing research on multimodal relation extraction (MRE) faces two co-existing challenges, internal-information over-utilization and external-information under-exploitation. To combat that, we propose a novel framework that simultaneously implements the idea of internal-information screening and external-information exploiting. First, we represent the fine-grained semantic structures of the input image and text with the visual and textual scene graphs, which are further fused into a unified cross-modal graph (CMG). Based on CMG, we perform structure refinement with the guidance of the graph information bottleneck principle, actively denoising the less-informative features. Next, we perform topic modeling over the input image and text, incorporating latent multimodal …

Cone: An Efficient Coarse-To-Fine Alignment Framework For Long Video Temporal Grounding, Zhijian Hou, Wanjun Zhong, Lei Ji, Difei Gao, Kun Yan, Wing-Kwong Chan, Chong-Wah Ngo, Mike Z. Shou, Nan. Duan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper tackles an emerging and challenging problem of long video temporal grounding (VTG) that localizes video moments related to a natural language (NL) query. Compared with short videos, long videos are also highly demanded but less explored, which brings new challenges in higher inference computation cost and weaker multi-modal alignment. To address these challenges, we propose CONE, an efficient COarse-to-fiNE alignment framework. CONE is a plug-and-play framework on top of existing VTG models to handle long videos through a sliding window mechanism. Specifically, CONE (1) introduces a query-guided window selection strategy to speed up inference, and (2) proposes a …

Prompt To Be Consistent Is Better Than Self-Consistent? Few-Shot And Zero-Shot Fact Verification With Pre-Trained Language Models, Fengzhu Zeng, Wei Gao Jul 2023

Prompt To Be Consistent Is Better Than Self-Consistent? Few-Shot And Zero-Shot Fact Verification With Pre-Trained Language Models, Fengzhu Zeng, Wei Gao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Few-shot or zero-shot fact verification only relies on a few or no labeled training examples. In this paper, we propose a novel method called ProToCo, to Prompt pre-trained language models (PLMs) To be Consistent, for improving the factuality assessment capability of PLMs in the few-shot and zero-shot settings. Given a claim-evidence pair, ProToCo generates multiple variants of the claim with different relations and frames a simple consistency mechanism as constraints for making compatible predictions across these variants. We update PLMs by using parameter-efficient fine-tuning (PEFT), leading to more accurate predictions in few-shot and zero-shot fact verification tasks. Our experiments on …

Multi-View Hypergraph Contrastive Policy Learning For Conversational Recommendation, Sen Zhao, Wei Wei, Xian-Ling Mao, Shuai: Yang Zhu, Zujie Wen, Dangyang Chen, Feida Zhu, Feida Zhu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Conversational recommendation systems (CRS) aim to interactively acquire user preferences and accordingly recommend items to users. Accurately learning the dynamic user preferences is of crucial importance for CRS. Previous works learn the user preferences with pairwise relations from the interactive conversation and item knowledge, while largely ignoring the fact that factors for a relationship in CRS are multiplex. Specifically, the user likes/dislikes the items that satisfy some attributes (Like/Dislike view). Moreover social influence is another important factor that affects user preference towards the item (Social view), while is largely ignored by previous works in CRS. The user preferences from these …

Generative Ai And Chatgpt: Applications, Challenges, And Ai-Human Collaboration, Fiona Nah, Ruilin Zheng, Jingyuan Cai, Keng Siau, Langtao Chen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Artificial intelligence (AI) has elicited much attention across disciplines and industries (Hyder et al., Citation2019). AI has been defined as “a system’s ability to correctly interpret external data, to learn from such data, and to use those learnings to achieve specific goals and tasks through flexible adaptation” (Kaplan & Haenlein, Citation2019, p. 15). AI has gone through several development stages and AI winters. In the first two decades (i.e., 1950s and 1960s), AI demonstrated success which included programs such as General Problem Solver (Newell et al., Citation1959) and ELIZA (Weizenbaum, Citation1966). However, limitations in processing capacity and reduced spending on …

Augmenting Fake Content Detection In Online Platforms: A Domain Adaptive Transfer Learning Via Adversarial Training Approach, Ka Chung Ng, Ping Fan Ke, Mike K. P. So, Kar Yan Tam

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Online platforms are experimenting with interventions such as content screening to moderate the effects of fake, biased, and incensing content. Yet, online platforms face an operational challenge in implementing machine learning algorithms for managing online content due to the labeling problem, where labeled data used for model training are limited and costly to obtain. To address this issue, we propose a domain adaptive transfer learning via adversarial training approach to augment fake content detection with collective human intelligence. We first start with a source domain dataset containing deceptive and trustworthy general news constructed from a large collection of labeled news …

Knowledge-Enhanced Mixed-Initiative Dialogue System For Emotional Support Conversations, Yang Deng, Wenxuan Zhang, Yifei Yuan, Wai Lam

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Unlike empathetic dialogues, the system in emotional support conversations (ESC) is expected to not only convey empathy for comforting the help-seeker, but also proactively assist in exploring and addressing their problems during the conversation. In this work, we study the problem of mixed-initiative ESC where the user and system can both take the initiative in leading the conversation. Specifically, we conduct a novel analysis on mixed-initiative ESC systems with a tailor-designed schema that divides utterances into different types with speaker roles and initiative types. Four emotional support metrics are proposed to evaluate the mixed-initiative interactions. The analysis reveals the necessity …

Towards Robust Personalized Dialogue Generation Via Order-Insensitive Representation Regularization, Liang Chen, Hongru Wang, Yang Deng, Wai-Chung Kwan, Zezhong Wang, Kam-Fai Wong Jul 2023

Towards Robust Personalized Dialogue Generation Via Order-Insensitive Representation Regularization, Liang Chen, Hongru Wang, Yang Deng, Wai-Chung Kwan, Zezhong Wang, Kam-Fai Wong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Generating persona consistent dialogue response is important for developing an intelligent conversational agent. Recent works typically fine-tune large-scale pre-trained models on this task by concatenating persona texts and dialogue history as a single input sequence to generate the target response. While simple and effective, our analysis shows that this popular practice is seriously affected by order sensitivity where different input orders of persona sentences significantly impact the quality and consistency of generated response, resulting in severe performance fluctuations (i.e., 29.4% on GPT2 and 83.2% on BART). To mitigate the order sensitivity problem, we propose a model-agnostic framework, ORder Insensitive Generation …

Product Question Answering In E-Commerce: A Survey, Yang Deng, Wenxuan Zhang, Qian Yu, Wai Lam

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Product question answering (PQA), aiming to automatically provide instant responses to customer’s questions in E-Commerce platforms, has drawn increasing attention in recent years. Compared with typical QA problems, PQA exhibits unique challenges such as the subjectivity and reliability of user-generated contents in E-commerce platforms. Therefore, various problem settings and novel methods have been proposed to capture these special characteristics. In this paper, we aim to systematically review existing research efforts on PQA. Specifically, we categorize PQA studies into four problem settings in terms of the form of provided answers. We analyze the pros and cons, as well as present existing …

Goal Awareness For Conversational Ai: Proactivity, Non-Collaborativity, And Beyond, Yang Deng, Wenqiang Lei, Minlie Huang, Tat-Seng Chua Jul 2023

Goal Awareness For Conversational Ai: Proactivity, Non-Collaborativity, And Beyond, Yang Deng, Wenqiang Lei, Minlie Huang, Tat-Seng Chua

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Conversational systems are envisioned to provide social support or functional service to human users via natural language interactions. Conventional conversation researches mainly focus on the responseability of the system, such as dialogue context understanding and response generation, but overlooks the design of an essential property in intelligent conversations, i.e., goal awareness. The awareness of goals means the state of not only being responsive to the users but also aware of the target conversational goal and capable of leading the conversation towards the goal, which is a significant step towards higher-level intelligence and artificial consciousness. It can not only largely improve …

Strategy‑Aware Bundle Recommender System, Yinwei Wei, Xiaohao Liu, Yunshan Ma, Xiang Wang, Liqiang Nie, Tat‑Seng Chua Jul 2023

Strategy‑Aware Bundle Recommender System, Yinwei Wei, Xiaohao Liu, Yunshan Ma, Xiang Wang, Liqiang Nie, Tat‑Seng Chua

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A bundle is a group of items that provides improved services to users and increased profits for sellers. However, locating the desired bundles that match the users' tastes still challenges us, due to the sparsity issue. Despite the remarkable performance of existing approaches, we argue that they seldom consider the bundling strategy (i.e., how the items within a bundle are associated with each other) in the bundle recommendation, resulting in the suboptimal user and bundle representations for their interaction prediction. Therefore, we propose to model the strategy-aware user and bundle representations for the bundle recommendation.Towards this end, we develop a …

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

Recently, deep learning (DL) models have excelled in a wide range of fields. All of these successes are built on intricate DL models. The hundreds of millions or even billions of parameters and high-performance computing graphical processing units or tensor processing units are largely responsible for their achievement. DL model integration into real-time devices with tight latency limitations, limited memory, and power-constrained requirements is the key driving force behind investigation of DL model compression techniques. Also, there is an increase in data availability that encourages multimodal fusion in DL models to boost the models' predictive accuracy. In order to create …

Neutrosophic Decision Making Model For Investment Portfolios Selection And Optimizing Based On Wide Variety Of Investment Opportunities And Many Criteria In Market, Ayman H. Abdel-Aziem, Hoda K. Mohamed, Ahmed Abdelhafeez

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications

Investment portfolio selection is a difficult subject due to the presence of competing factors. Choosing a portfolio for one's investments is a major choice that may have far-reaching effects on one's financial well-being. Risk tolerance, time horizon, investing objectives, asset allocation, and investment selection are only a few of the factors that will be studied in this article. The Stable Preference Ordering Towards Ideal Solution (SPOTIS) technique is the basis for our proposed integrated multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) model. This paper used the single-valued neutrosophic set as a framework to deal with uncertain data. The purpose of the suggested SPOTIS–Neutrosophic model …

Can You Answer This? - Exploring Zero-Shot Qa Generalization Capabilities In Large Language Models, Saptarshi Sengupta, Shreya Ghosh, Preslav Nakov, Prasenjit Mitra

Natural Language Processing Faculty Publications

The buzz around Transformer-based Language Models (TLMs) such as BERT, RoBERTa, etc. is well-founded owing to their impressive results on an array of tasks. However, when applied to areas needing specialized knowledge (closed-domain), such as medical, finance, etc. their performance takes drastic hits, sometimes more than their older recurrent/convolutional counterparts. In this paper, we explore zero-shot capabilities of large language models for extractive Question Answering. Our objective is to examine the performance change in the face of domain drift, i.e., when the target domain data is vastly different in semantic and statistical properties from the source domain, in an attempt …

Graphprompt: Graph-Based Prompt Templates For Biomedical Synonym Prediction, Hanwen Xu, Jiayou Zhang, Zhirui Wang, Shizhuo Zhang, Megh Bhalerao, Yucong Liu, Dawei Zhu, Sheng Wang

Computer Vision Faculty Publications

In the expansion of biomedical dataset, the same category may be labeled with different terms, thus being tedious and onerous to curate these terms. Therefore, automatically mapping synonymous terms onto the ontologies is desirable, which we name as biomedical synonym prediction task. Unlike biomedical concept normalization (BCN), no clues from context can be used to enhance synonym prediction, making it essential to extract graph features from ontology. We introduce an expert-curated dataset OBO-syn encompassing 70 different types of concepts and 2 million curated concept-term pairs for evaluating synonym prediction methods. We find BCN methods perform weakly on this task for …

Stability-Based Generalization Analysis For Mixtures Of Pointwise And Pairwise Learning, Jiahuan Wang, Jun Chen, Hong Chen, Bin Gu, Weifu Li, Xin Tang Jun 2023

Stability-Based Generalization Analysis For Mixtures Of Pointwise And Pairwise Learning, Jiahuan Wang, Jun Chen, Hong Chen, Bin Gu, Weifu Li, Xin Tang

Machine Learning Faculty Publications

Recently, some mixture algorithms of pointwise and pairwise learning (PPL) have been formulated by employing the hybrid error metric of “pointwise loss + pairwise loss” and have shown empirical effectiveness on feature selection, ranking and recommendation tasks. However, to the best of our knowledge, the learning theory foundation of PPL has not been touched in the existing works. In this paper, we try to fill this theoretical gap by investigating the generalization properties of PPL. After extending the definitions of algorithmic stability to the PPL setting, we establish the high-probability generalization bounds for uniformly stable PPL algorithms. Moreover, explicit convergence …

Probing As A Technique To Understand Abstract Spaces, Ashlen A. Plasek Jun 2023

Probing As A Technique To Understand Abstract Spaces, Ashlen A. Plasek

Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal

Machine learning models, while very powerful, have their operation obfuscated behind millions of parameters. This obfuscation can make deriving a human meaningful process from a machine learning model very difficult. However, while the intermediate states of a machine learning model are similarly obfuscated, using probing, we can start to explore looking at possible structure in those intermediate states. Large language models are a prime example of this obfuscation, and probing can begin to allow novel experimentation to be performed.

Grm: Generative Relevance Modeling Using Relevance-Aware Sample Estimation For Document Retrieval, Iain Mackie, Ivan Sekulic, Shubham Chatterjee, Jeffrey Dalton, Fabio Crestani

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Recent studies show that Generative Relevance Feedback (GRF), using text generated by Large Language Models (LLMs), can enhance the effectiveness of query expansion. However, LLMs can generate irrelevant information that harms retrieval effectiveness. To address this, we propose Generative Relevance Modeling (GRM) that uses Relevance-Aware Sample Estimation (RASE) for more accurate weighting of expansion terms. Specifically, we identify similar real documents for each generated document and use a neural re-ranker to estimate their relevance. Experiments on three standard document ranking benchmarks show that GRM improves MAP by 6-9% and R@1k by 2-4%, surpassing previous methods.

Towards An Experimental Bibliography Of Hemispheric Reconstruction Newspapers, Joshua Ortiz Baco, Benjamin Charles Germain Lee, Jim Casey, Sarah H. Salter Jun 2023

Towards An Experimental Bibliography Of Hemispheric Reconstruction Newspapers, Joshua Ortiz Baco, Benjamin Charles Germain Lee, Jim Casey, Sarah H. Salter

Criticism

Digital collections of newspapers have drawn broader attention to the fragmented and scattered print histories of minoritized communities. Attempts to survey these histories through bibliography, however, quickly meet with a fundamental problem: the practice of bibliographic description calls for creating a static record of social affiliations. Given the overwhelming scholarly consensus that categories such as race, ethnicity, and language are socially constructed, this article introduces an experimental bibliographic method for mapping the vast landscape of historical newspapers. This method extends the machine learning affordances of a recent project called Newspaper Navigator to enumerate the newspapers in Chronicling America according to …

Quantifying Implicit Bias In Judicial Legal Opinions: A Natural Language Processing Approach, Philip N. Surendran Jun 2023

Quantifying Implicit Bias In Judicial Legal Opinions: A Natural Language Processing Approach, Philip N. Surendran

Quantitative Social Science Undergraduate Senior Theses

Implicit bias and criminal justice are two concepts that have long been intertwined. There is no justice without neutrality, and yet how do we tell if the actors enforcing the system are actually impartial? In this thesis, I utilize recent advancements in machine learning to attempt to answer this question. Specifically, I use natural language processing to examine the text of opinions written by judges in appellate courts, and I leverage these findings to build quantifiable measures of implicit bias. In particular, I look at the over/under-representation of certain emotions, sentiments and linguistic styles as a proxy for disparate treatment …
