Improving The Hopfield Network Through Beam Search, Tony R. Martinez, Xinchuan Zeng Jul 2001

Improving The Hopfield Network Through Beam Search, Tony R. Martinez, Xinchuan Zeng

Faculty Publications

In this paper we propose a beam search mechanism to improve the performance of the Hopfield network for solving optimization problems. The beam search readjusts the top M (M > 1) activated neurons to more similar activation levels in the early phase of relaxation, so that the network has the opportunity to explore more alternative, potentially better solutions. We evaluated this approach using a large number of simulations (20,000 for each parameter setting), based on 200 randomly generated city distributions of the 10-city traveling salesman problem. The results show that the beam search has the capability of significantly improving the network …

Lazy Training: Improving Backpropagation Learning Through Network Interaction, Timothy L. Andersen, Tony R. Martinez, Michael E. Rimer Jul 2001

Lazy Training: Improving Backpropagation Learning Through Network Interaction, Timothy L. Andersen, Tony R. Martinez, Michael E. Rimer

Faculty Publications

Backpropagation, similar to most high-order learning algorithms, is prone to overfitting. We address this issue by introducing interactive training (IT), a logical extension to backpropagation training that employs interaction among multiple networks. This method is based on the theory that centralized control is more effective for learning in deep problem spaces in a multi-agent paradigm. IT methods allow networks to work together to form more complex systems while not restraining their individual ability to specialize. Lazy training, an implementation of IT that minimizes misclassification error, is presented. Lazy training discourages overfitting and is conducive to higher accuracy in multiclass problems …

Application-Centric Analysis Of Ip-Based Mobility Management Techniques, Archan Misra, Subir Das, Prathima Agrawal Jul 2001

Application-Centric Analysis Of Ip-Based Mobility Management Techniques, Archan Misra, Subir Das, Prathima Agrawal

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper considers three applications—VoIP, mobile Web access and mobile server-based data transfers—and evaluates the applicability of various IP-based mobility management mechanisms. We first survey the features and characteristics of various IP mobility protocols, such as MIPv4, MIPv6, MIP-RO, SIP, CIP, HAWAII, MIP-RR and IDMP, and then evaluate their utility on an application-specific basis. The diversity in the mobility-related requirements ensures that no single mobility solution is universally applicable. We recommend a hierarchical mobility architecture. The framework uses our Dynamic Mobility Agent (DMA) architecture for managing intra-domain mobility and multiple application-based binding protocols for supporting inter-domain mobility. Thus, we recommend …

Recent Advances In Content-Based Video Analysis, Chong-Wah Ngo, Ting-Chuen Pong, Hong-Jiang Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we present major issues in video parsing, abstraction, retrieval and semantic analysis. We discuss the success, the difficulties and the expectations in these areas. In addition, we identify important opened problems that can lead to more sophisticated ways of video content analysis. For video parsing, we discuss topics in video partitioning, motion characterization and object segmentation. The success in video parsing, in general, will have a great impact on video representation and retrieval. We present three levels of abstracting video content by scene, keyframe and key object representations. These representation schemes in overall serve as a good …

Minimum Mean Square Error Spectral Peak Envelope Estimation For Automatic Vowel Classification, Jaishree Venugopal Jul 2001

Minimum Mean Square Error Spectral Peak Envelope Estimation For Automatic Vowel Classification, Jaishree Venugopal

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Spectral feature computations continue to be a very difficult problem for accurate machine recognition of speech. In this work, which focuses on vowels, a new spectral peak envelope method for vowel classification is developed, based on a missing frequency components model of speech recognition. According to the missing frequency components model, vowel recognition depends only on the spectral (harmonic) peaks. Smoothing and interpolation of the spectra, performed in the standard cepstral analysis method commonly used in automatic speech recognition, actually loses valuable information and results in reduced recognition accuracy. The new method for feature extraction presented in this thesis is …

On The Utility Of Entanglement In Quantum Neural Computing, Dan A. Ventura Jul 2001

On The Utility Of Entanglement In Quantum Neural Computing, Dan A. Ventura

Faculty Publications

Efforts in combining quantum and neural computation are briefly discussed and the concept of entanglement as it applies to this subject is addressed. Entanglement is perhaps the least understood aspect of quantum systems used for computation, yet it is apparently most responsible for their computational power. This paper argues for the importance of understanding and utilizing entanglement in quantum neural computation.

An Evaluation Of Shared Multicast Trees With Multiple Active Cores, Daniel Zappala, Aaron Fabbri Jul 2001

An Evaluation Of Shared Multicast Trees With Multiple Active Cores, Daniel Zappala, Aaron Fabbri

Faculty Publications

Core-based multicast trees use less router state, but have significant drawbacks when compared to shortest-path trees, namely higher delay and poor fault tolerance. We evaluate the feasibility of using multiple independent cores within a shared multicast tree. We consider several basic designs and discuss how using multiple cores improves fault tolerance without sacrificing router state. We examine the performance of multiple-core trees with respect to single-core trees and find that adding cores significantly lowers delay without increasing cost. Moreover, it takes only a small number of cores, placed with a k-center approximation, for a multiple-core tree to have lower delay …

Information-Centric Decision-Support Systems: A Blueprint For ‘Interoperability’, Jens G. Pohl Jun 2001

Information-Centric Decision-Support Systems: A Blueprint For ‘Interoperability’, Jens G. Pohl

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

For the past 20 years the US military services have suffered under the limitations of stove-piped computer software applications that function as discrete entities within a fragmented data-processing environment. Lack of interoperability has been identified by numerous think tanks, advisory boards, and studies, as the primary information systems problem (e.g., Army Science Board 2000, Air Force SAB 2000 Command and Control Study, and NSB Network-Centric Naval Forces 2000). Yet, despite this level of attention, all attempts to achieve interoperability within the current data-centric information systems environment have proven to be expensive, unreliable, and generally unsuccessful.

Gravitational Acceleration In Hades, Andrew Simoson Jun 2001

Gravitational Acceleration In Hades, Andrew Simoson

ACMS Conference Proceedings 2001

Does acceleration due to gravity increase or decrease upon descending from Earth’s surface? The answer—as we show—depends on one’s model for Earth’s density. For our Earth, gravity increases before it collapses to zero at Earth center.

Genetic Algorithms For Communications Network Design - An Empirical Study Of The Factors That Influence Performance, Hsinghua Chou, G. Premkumar, Chao-Hsien Chu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We explore the use of GAs for solving a network optimization problem, the degree-constrained minimum spanning tree problem. We also examine the impact of encoding, crossover, and mutation on the performance of the GA. A specialized repair heuristic is used to improve performance. An experimental design with 48 cells and ten data points in each cell is used to examine the impact of two encoding methods, three crossover methods, two mutation methods, and four networks of varying node sizes. Two performance measures, solution quality and computation time, are used to evaluate the performance. The results obtained indicate that encoding has …

Effect Of Exponential Averaging On The Variability Of A Red Queue, Archan Misra, Teunis Ott, John Baras Jun 2001

Effect Of Exponential Averaging On The Variability Of A Red Queue, Archan Misra, Teunis Ott, John Baras

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The paper analyzes how using a longer memory of the past queue occupancy in computing the average queue occupancy affects the stability and variability of a RED queue. Extensive simulation studies with both persistent and Web TCP sources are used to study the variance of the RED queue as a function of the memory of the averaging process. Our results show that there is very little performance improvement (and in fact, possibly significant performance degradation) if the length of memory is increased beyond a very small value. Contrary to current practice, our results show that a longer memory reduces the …

Implementation And Performance Evaluation Of Telemip, Kaushik Chakraborty, Archan Misra, Subir Das, Anthony J. Mcauley, Ashutosh Dutta, Sajal K. Das

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we present our implementation of TeleMIP a two-level architecture for IP based mobility management TeleMIP essentially uses an Intra-Domain Mobility Management Protocol IDMP for managing mobility within a domain and Mobile IP for supporting inter-domain global mobility. Unlike other proposed schemes for intra-domain mobility management IDMP uses two care of addresses for mobility management The global care of address is relatively stable and identifies the mobile nodes current domain[1] while the local care of address changes every time the mobile changes subnets and identifies the mobiles current point of attachment. The paper describes our TeleMIP implementation based …

Waqs : A Web-Based Approximate Query System, George Jyh-Shian Chang

Dissertations

The Web is often viewed as a gigantic database holding vast stores of information and provides ubiquitous accessibility to end-users. Since its inception, the Internet has experienced explosive growth both in the number of users and the amount of content available on it. However, searching for information on the Web has become increasingly difficult. Although query languages have long been part of database management systems, the standard query language being the Structural Query Language is not suitable for the Web content retrieval.

In this dissertation, a new technique for document retrieval on the Web is presented. This technique is designed …

An All-To-All Multicast Routing Protocol In A Wireless Ad-Hoc Network To Improve Channel Utilization, Zhong Hua Zhou May 2001

An All-To-All Multicast Routing Protocol In A Wireless Ad-Hoc Network To Improve Channel Utilization, Zhong Hua Zhou

Theses and Dissertations

Wireless Ad-hoc network has become more and more popular. Several different multicasting schemes for this type of network have been developed. But most of them are targeting a situation where the total number of senders is much less than the total number of receivers. This thesis analyzes different wireless communication patterns in ad hoc network, the trend for wireless communication and presents a new multicast scheme. It targets an ad-hoc network where all mobile hosts act as both senders and receivers. The proposed scheme in this thesis will reduce overheads by combining data packets that are destined for the same …

Image Reconstruction Using Data-Dependent Triangulation, Thomas W. Sederberg, Xiaohua Yu, Bryan S. Morse May 2001

Image Reconstruction Using Data-Dependent Triangulation, Thomas W. Sederberg, Xiaohua Yu, Bryan S. Morse

Faculty Publications

Image reconstruction based on data-dependent triangulation with new cost functions and optimization can create higher quality images than traditional bilinear or bicubic spline reconstruction. The article presents a novel method for image reconstruction using a piecewise linear intensity surface whose elements don't generally align with the coordinate axes. This method is based on the technique of data-dependent triangulation (DDT) that N. Dyn et al. (1990) introduced and has proven capable of producing more pleasing reconstructions than axis-aligned methods.

The Next Wave In Erp Implementation, Keng Siau, Y. Tian May 2001

The Next Wave In Erp Implementation, Keng Siau, Y. Tian

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Although the benefits of ERP are obvious, the risks and costs associated with it are very high. Some problems in implementing ERP system are documented, but the real challenge comes from the Internet and E-business. ERP is an enterprise wide system whose purpose is to achieve internal efficiency, while E-business cuts across different enterprises and extends the individual value chain into an Internet based, dynamic process aimed at maximizing external efficiency. To survive the E-business challenge, the arguably single, and also the best, solution for ERP systems is to integrate with E-business applications, which we call ERP II. By properly …

Idmp-Based Fast Handoffs And Paging In Ip-Based Cellular Networks, Archan Misra, Subir Das, Ashutosh Dutta, Sajal K. Das May 2001

Idmp-Based Fast Handoffs And Paging In Ip-Based Cellular Networks, Archan Misra, Subir Das, Ashutosh Dutta, Sajal K. Das

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We consider the use of our previously proposed Intra-Domain Mobility Management Protocol (IDMP) in fourth-generation mobile networks. On evaluating the heterogeneous access technologies, cellular layouts, and application characteristics of 4G environments, we realize a need to reduce both handoff latency and the frequency of mobility-related signaling. We first present IDMP's fast intradomain handoff mechanism that uses a duration-limited proactive packet multicasting solution. We quantify the expected buffering requirements of our proposed multicasting scheme for typical 4G network characteristics and compare it with alternative IP-based fast handoff solutions. We also present a paging scheme under IDMP that replicates the current cellular …

Effective Bandwidth For Traffic Engineering, Mark J. Clement, Rob Kunz, Seth Nielson, Quinn O. Snell May 2001

Effective Bandwidth For Traffic Engineering, Mark J. Clement, Rob Kunz, Seth Nielson, Quinn O. Snell

Faculty Publications

In today’s Internet, demand is increasing for guarantees of speed and efficiency. Current routers are very limited in the type and quantity of observed data they can provide, making it difficult for providers to maximize utilization without the risk of degraded throughput. This research uses statistical data currents provided by router vendors to estimate the impact of changes in network configuration on the probability of link overflow. This allows service providers to calculate in advance, the effect of grooming on a network, eliminating the conservative trial-and-error approach normally used. These predictions are made using Large Deviation Theory, which focuses on …

Interpolating Implicit Surfaces From Scattered Surface Data Using Compactly Supported Radial Basis Functions, Bryan S. Morse, David T. Chen, Penny Rheingans, Kalpathi Subramanian, Terry S. Yoo May 2001

Interpolating Implicit Surfaces From Scattered Surface Data Using Compactly Supported Radial Basis Functions, Bryan S. Morse, David T. Chen, Penny Rheingans, Kalpathi Subramanian, Terry S. Yoo

Faculty Publications

We describe algebraic methods for creating implicit surfaces using linear combinations of radial basis interpolants to form complex models from scattered surface points. Shapes with arbitrary topology are easily represented without the usual interpolation or aliasing errors arising from discrete sampling. These methods were first applied to implicit surfaces by Savchenko, et al. and later developed independently by Turk and O'Brien as a means of performing shape interpolation. Earlier approaches were limited as a modeling mechanism because of the order of the computational complexity involved. We explore and extend these implicit interpolating methods to make them suitable for systems of …

Predictive Self-Organizing Networks For Text Categorization, Ah-Hwee Tan Apr 2001

Predictive Self-Organizing Networks For Text Categorization, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper introduces a class of predictive self-organizing neural networks known as Adaptive Resonance Associative Map (ARAM) for classification of free-text documents. Whereas most sta- tistical approaches to text categorization derive classification knowledge based on training examples alone, ARAM performs supervised learn- ing and integrates user-defined classification knowledge in the form of IF-THEN rules. Through our experiments on the Reuters-21578 news database, we showed that ARAM performed reasonably well in mining categorization knowledge from sparse and high dimensional document feature space. In addition, ARAM predictive accuracy and learning efficiency can be improved by incorporating a set of rules derived from …

Tcp Hack: Tcp Header Checksum Option To Improve Performance Over Lossy Links, Rajesh Krishna Balan, Boon Peng Lee, Renjish Kumar, Jacob Lillykutty, Winston Seah, A. L. Ananda

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Wireless networks have become increasingly common and an increasing number of devices are communicating with each other over lossy links. Unfortunately, TCP performs poorly over lossy links as it is unable to differentiate the loss due to packet corruption from that due to congestion. We present an extension to TCP which enables TCP to distinguish packet corruption from congestion in lossy environments resulting in improved performance. We refer to this extension as the HeAder ChecKsum option (HACK). We implemented our algorithm in the Linux kernel and performed various tests to determine its effectiveness. Our results have shown that HACK performs …

Topic Detection, Tracking, And Trend Analysis Using Self-Organizing Neural Networks, Kanagasabai Rajaraman, Ah-Hwee Tan Apr 2001

Topic Detection, Tracking, And Trend Analysis Using Self-Organizing Neural Networks, Kanagasabai Rajaraman, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We address the problem of Topic Detection and Tracking (TDT) and subsequently detecting trends from a stream of text documents. Formulating TDT as a clustering problem in a class of self-organizing neural networks, we propose an incremental clustering algorithm. On this setup we show how trends can be identified. Through experimental studies, we observe that our method enables discovering interesting trends that are deducible only from reading all relevant documents.

Hidden Markov Models For Visual Speech Synthesis In Limited Data, Harold A. Arb Mar 2001

Hidden Markov Models For Visual Speech Synthesis In Limited Data, Harold A. Arb

Theses and Dissertations

This work presents a new approach for estimating control points (facial locations that control movement) to allow the artificial generation of video with apparent mouth movement (visual speech) time-synced with recorded audio. First, Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) are estimated for each visual speech category (viseme) present in stored video data, where a category is defined as the mouth movement corresponding to a given sound and where the visemes are further categorized as trisemes (a viseme in the context of previous and following visemes). Next, a decision tree is used to cluster and relate states in the HMMs that are similar …

Transforming Analysis Models Into Design Models For The Multiagent Engineering Systems (Mase) Methodology, Clint H. Sparkman Mar 2001

Transforming Analysis Models Into Design Models For The Multiagent Engineering Systems (Mase) Methodology, Clint H. Sparkman

Theses and Dissertations

Agent technology has received much attention in the last few years because of the advantages that multiagent systems have in complex, distributed environments. For multiagent systems are to be effective, they must be reliable, robust, and secure. AFIT's Agent Research Group has developed a complete lifecycle methodology, called Multiagent Systems Engineering (MaSE), for analyzing, designing, and developing heterogeneous multiagent systems. However, developing multiagent systems is a complicated process, and there is no guarantee that the resulting system meets the initial requirements and will operate reliably with the desired behavior. The purpose of this research was to develop a semi-automated formal …
