The Carnot project was an ambitious research project in heterogeneous databases. It integrated a variety of techniques to address a wide range of problems in achieving interoperation in heterogeneous environments. Here we describe some of the major implemented applications of this project. These applications concern(a) accessing a legacy scientific database, (b) automating a workflow involving legacy systems, (c) cleaning data, and (d) retrieving semantically appropriate information from structured databases in response to text queries. These applications support scientific decision support, business process management, data integrity enhancement, and analytical decision support, respectively. They demonstrate Carnot‘s capabilities for (a) heterogeneous query processing, …

Characterizing A Portable Subset Of Behavioral Vhdl-93, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan, Robert Ewing Apr 1997

Characterizing A Portable Subset Of Behavioral Vhdl-93, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan, Robert Ewing

Kno.e.sis Publications

Goossens defined a structural operational semantics for a subset of VHDL-87 and proved that the parallelism present in VHDL is benign. We extend this work to include VHDL-93 features such as shared variables and postponed processes that change the underlying semantic model. In the presence of shared variables, nondeterministic execution of VHDL-93 processes destroys the unique meaning property. We identify and characterize a class of portable VHDL-93 descriptions for which unique meaning property can be salvaged. Our specification can serve as a correctness criteria for a VHDL-93 simulator.

Temporal Flocking And Cacophony Simulating Agent Communication In A Noisy Environment, Jessica R. Crawford Apr 1997

Temporal Flocking And Cacophony Simulating Agent Communication In A Noisy Environment, Jessica R. Crawford

Honors Theses

Realistic communication is one of the most difficult aspects of simulating group behavior because the patterns produced by group communication are complex and not easily definable. In this paper, we present a model, developed using artificial life methodology, for creating simulations of group communication. Our model employs autonomous, artificial agents to produce emergent group behavior that resembles the communication patterns of a group, specifically, a flock of birds. Each agent collects information about its environment and its neighbors and follows a set of rules designed to meet both group goals and individual agent goals. Because we seek to establish emergent …

On The Automatic Generation Of Network Protocol Simulators, Andrew Chen Apr 1997

On The Automatic Generation Of Network Protocol Simulators, Andrew Chen

Honors Theses

Computers communicate with each other over various communication networks via a language known as a protocol. The design of the protocol can have a significant impact on the efficiency (and effectiveness) of the network. Because building an actual network to test the performance (and reliability) of a new protocol is rather expensive and time consuming, there is an interest in simulating network protocols in order to determine how efficient the communication network is. We are therefore interested in automatically generating simulators that could measure the performance of the new protocols. There are two main parts to this project. The first …

Parallel Programming, Peter Dailey Apr 1997

Parallel Programming, Peter Dailey

Honors Theses

The speed of technology is always increasing, especially in the field of computing. Unfortunately, the size of the problems needing to be solved are also growing in many areas. In order to keep up with this, parallel computing has become an important research area. The term parallel computing essentially refers to using multiple processors cooperating to solve a problem. For certain problems this can speed up the solution by a factor ofN, the number of processors being used. There are algorithms, for which there is no speed increase due to certain dependencies.

A Split-Phase Interface For Parallel File Systems, Sanjay Khanna, David Kotz Mar 1997

A Split-Phase Interface For Parallel File Systems, Sanjay Khanna, David Kotz

Computer Science Technical Reports

We describe the effects of a new user-level library for the Galley Parallel File System. This library allows some pre-existing sequential programs to make use of the Galley Parallel File System with minimal modification. It permits programs to efficiently use the parallel file system because the user-level library groups accesses together. We examine the performance of our library, and we show how code needs to be modified to use the library.

Cascade Artmap: Integrating Neural Computation And Symbolic Knowledge Processing, Ah-Hwee Tan Mar 1997

Cascade Artmap: Integrating Neural Computation And Symbolic Knowledge Processing, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper introduces a hybrid system termed cascade adaptive resonance theory mapping (ARTMAP) that incorporates symbolic knowledge into neural-network learning and recognition. Cascade ARTMAP, a generalization of fuzzy ARTMAP, represents intermediate attributes and rule cascades of rule-based knowledge explicitly and performs multistep inferencing. A rule insertion algorithm translates if-then symbolic rules into cascade ARTMAP architecture. Besides that initializing networks with prior knowledge can improve predictive accuracy and learning efficiency, the inserted symbolic knowledge can be refined and enhanced by the cascade ARTMAP learning algorithm. By preserving symbolic rule form during learning, the rules extracted from cascade ARTMAP can be compared …

An Introduction To Algorithmic Information Theory: Its History And Some Examples, George Markowsky Mar 1997

An Introduction To Algorithmic Information Theory: Its History And Some Examples, George Markowsky

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The goal of this paper is to provide a simple introduction to Algorithmic Information Theory (AIT) that will highlight some of the main ideas without presenting too many details. More technical treatments of these ideas can be found in References [1], [2], [3] and [4], which are listed at the end of the paper. The main ideas of Algorithmic Information Theory will be presented using English as the underlying programming language. The presentation illustrates the fact that the same arguments can be expressed in any other reasonable language and that the main results have a robust universality across all reasonable …

A System For Query Comprehension, Hock Chuan Chan, Kwok Kee Wei, Keng Siau Mar 1997

A System For Query Comprehension, Hock Chuan Chan, Kwok Kee Wei, Keng Siau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A major difficulty of query writing is that users do not fully understand queries. A system providing feedback is proposed so as to enable users to better understand their queries. It is a multi-functional rule-based system. In addition to providing an English translation for the query, it pin-points syntax errors, and suggests possible solutions. It also finds likely semantic errors, and provides possible solutions. The system was implemented for a query language based on the entity relationship model. It is expected to lead to better user performance. Empirical testing showed significant improvement in user performance with the feedback system. The …

Object Matching Using The Dynamic Programming Algorithm, Rhoda Baggs Koss Mar 1997

Object Matching Using The Dynamic Programming Algorithm, Rhoda Baggs Koss

Theses and Dissertations

A new algorithm for matching objects between images is developed and investigated. Affine transformations, i.e. those with translation, rotation, scaling and shearing between images are considered. Steps along the way include segmentation of the 2 images (referred to as the reference and inspected images), contour tracing of each segment/object in each image, the creation of objects via a new object representation scheme known as length codes (developed in [3]), and the application of the new dynamic warping algorithm. New original concepts include the use of the dynamic warping algorithm on sequences of length codes in order to determine the k …

Teaching Ethical And Social Issues In Cs1 And Cs2, Kay G. Schulze, Frances Grodzinsky

School of Computer Science & Engineering Faculty Publications

The discussion of whether ethical and social issues of computing should be explored in undergraduate computer science education has resulted in most academic institutions and educators agreeing that they are important topics that must be included. Further support has been provided by Curricula '91 [16], the CSAC/CSAB accreditation [2] and ImpactCS [12]. Many books [7, 8, 9, 10] and papers [6, 14] have discussed what topics should be covered and what techniques can be used either in a dedicated course or in modules across the curriculum. However, explicit detailed examples that have worked successfully, particularly in lower level computer science …

Peak-To-Mean Power Control And Error Correction For Ofdm Transmission Using Golay Sequences And Reed-Muller Codes, James A. Davis, J Jedwab Feb 1997

Peak-To-Mean Power Control And Error Correction For Ofdm Transmission Using Golay Sequences And Reed-Muller Codes, James A. Davis, J Jedwab

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

A coding scheme for OFDM transmission is proposed, exploiting a previously unrecognised connection between pairs of Golay complementary sequences and second-order Reed-Muller codes. The scheme solves the notorious problem of power control in OFDM systems by maintaining a peak-to-mean envelope power ratio of at most 3dB while allowing simple encoding and decoding at high code rates for binary, quaternary or higher-phase signalling together with good error correction.

Asml: Automatic Site Markup Language 1.03, Charles B. Owen, Fillia Makedon, Glen Frank, Michael Kenyon

Computer Science Technical Reports

Creation of large and complex World Wide Web sites is hampered by the "page at a time" approach of many tools and the programming knowledge and custom software development required for automated solutions. This report describes the development of the Automatic Site Markup Language (ASML). ASML is a new markup language designed to produce large, complicated web sites which can include dynamic content. ASML extends HTML with new, high-level features while still preserving complete compatibility with common browser and server technologies. It has powerful indexing and searching facilities, and enables the automatic translation of document formats. Most importantly, ASML provides …

Studies Of Qcd In E+E- → Hadrons At Ecm = 130 And 136 Gev, D. Buskulic, M. Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Studies of QCD in e+e−→e+e−→ Hadrons at Ecm=Ecm=} 130 and 136 GeV The ALEPH Collaboration An analysis of the properties of hadronic final states produced in electron-positron annihilation at centre-of-mass energies of 130 and 136 GeV is presented. The measurements are based on a data sample of 5.7 pb−1pb−1 collected in November 1995 with the \Aleph detector at LEP. Inclusive charged particle distributions, jet rates and event-shape distributions are measured and the results are compared with the predictions of QCD-based models. From the measured distributions quantities are determined for which the dependence on the centre-of-mass energy can be predicted by …
