The Complexity Of Clerkship Scheduling, Jonathan Feldman
The Complexity Of Clerkship Scheduling, Jonathan Feldman
Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses
Medical students must complete a clerkship program in their fourth year. Individual students have preferences for the clerkships to which they are assigned. However, individual hospitals also have capacities on how many students may be assigned to each clerkship. The problem of scheduling medical students to clerkships is formalized. The problem is then placed in a theoretical framework, and the most general case of Clerkship Scheduling is proven NP-hard. A detailed approximation algorithm is given, and an implementation of this algorithm is discussed and tested.
Measurement Of The Branching Fraction For D0 → K-Π+, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas
Measurement Of The Branching Fraction For D0 → K-Π+, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The branching fraction for D0 → K−π+ is measured with the statistics collected by ALEPH from 1991 to 1994. The method is based on the comparison between the rate for the reconstructed D∗+→ D0π+, D0 → K−π+ decay chain and the rate for inclusive soft pion production at low transverse momentum with respect to the nearest jet. The result is B(D0 → K−π+0 = (3.90 ± 0.09 ± 0.12)%

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
Specialization has been recognized as a powerful technique for optimizing operating systems. However, specialization has not been broadly applied beyond the research community because the current techniques, based on manual specialization, are time-consuming and error-prone. This paper describes a specialization toolkit that should help broaden the applicability of specializing operating systems by assisting in the automatic generation of specialized code, and {\em guarding} the specialized code to ensure the specialized system continues to be correct. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the toolkit by describing experiences we have had applying it in real, production environments. We report on our experiences with …
Search For The Bc Meson In Hadronic Z Decays, R. Barate, Manoj Thulasidas
Search For The Bc Meson In Hadronic Z Decays, R. Barate, Manoj Thulasidas
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
A search for the Bc meson decaying into the channels Jψπ+ and Jψℓ+νℓ (ℓ = e or μ) is performed in a sample of 3.9 million hadronic Z decays collected by the ALEPH detector. This search results in the observation of 0 and 2 candidates in each of these channels, respectively, while 0.44 and 0.81 background events are expected. The following 90% confidence level upper limits are derived:Br(Z→BcXBr(Z→qq̄Br(Bc+→Jψπ+)
Physiologically-Based Vision Modeling Applications And Gradient Descent-Based Parameter Adaptation Of Pulse Coupled Neural Networks, Randy P. Broussard
Physiologically-Based Vision Modeling Applications And Gradient Descent-Based Parameter Adaptation Of Pulse Coupled Neural Networks, Randy P. Broussard
Theses and Dissertations
In this research, pulse coupled neural networks (PCNNs) are analyzed and evaluated for use in primate vision modeling. An adaptive PCNN is developed that automatically sets near-optimal parameter values to achieve a desired output. For vision modeling, a physiologically motivated vision model is developed from current theoretical and experimental biological data. The biological vision processing principles used in this model, such as spatial frequency filtering, competitive feature selection, multiple processing paths, and state dependent modulation are analyzed and implemented to create a PCNN based feature extraction network. This network extracts luminance, orientation, pitch, wavelength, and motion, and can be cascaded …

Dissertations
This dissertation presents the development of three computer systems for multi-wavelength thermal imaging.
Two computer systems were developed for the multi-wavelength imaging pyrometers (M-WIPs) that yield non-contact temperature measurements by remotely sensing the surface of objects with unknown wavelength-dependent emissivity. These M-WIP computer systems represent the state-of-art development in remote temperature measurement system based on the multi-wavelength approach. The dissertation research includes M-WIP computer system integration, software development, performance evaluation, and also applications in monitoring and control of temperature distribution of silicon wafers in a rapid thermal process system.
The two M-WIPs are capable of data acquisition, signal processing, system …
A Graphical Environment For Change Detection In Structured Documents, Girish A. Patel
A Graphical Environment For Change Detection In Structured Documents, Girish A. Patel
Theses
Change detection in structured documents (e.g. SGML is important in data warehousing, digital libraries and Internet databases. This thesis presents a graphical environment for detecting changes in the structured documents. We represent. each document by alp ordered labeled tree based on the underlying markup language. We then compare two documents by invoking previously developed algorithms for approximate pattern matching and pattern discovery in trees. Several operators are developed to support. the comparison of the documents; graphical devices are provided to facilitate the use of the operators. We believe the proposed tool is useful for not only document management, but also …
Solomon's Sea And The Biblical Π, Andrew Simoson
Solomon's Sea And The Biblical Π, Andrew Simoson
ACMS Conference Proceedings 1997
From I Kings 7:23, the apparent diameter and circumference of a circular ring are given as 10 and 30 cubits which suggests that the Biblical value of π is 3 rather a number closer to π. However we recount seven different somewhat whimsical explanations as to why this conclusion is overly-hasty.
Mathematics And Values: Can Philosophy Guide Projects?, Michael H. Veatch
Mathematics And Values: Can Philosophy Guide Projects?, Michael H. Veatch
ACMS Conference Proceedings 1997
The philosophy of mathematics has provided insight on questions of foundations and mathematical truth; however, it has not been very fruitful in guiding the practice of mathematics. This paper attempts to find points of contact between a Christian worldview and the choice of mathematical projects and methods. Three areas are considered: (i) dubitability in current research, (ii) the intrinsic value of contemporary mathematics to contemporary society, and (iii) the affirmation of human value in the use of mathematics. Finally, a framework for valuing mathematics is proposed as an encouragement to think more deeply about how a Christian might choose a …
An Investigation Of The Behavior Of Calculus Students Working Collaboratively In An Interactive Software Environment, Angela Hare
An Investigation Of The Behavior Of Calculus Students Working Collaboratively In An Interactive Software Environment, Angela Hare
ACMS Conference Proceedings 1997
Recent work in the area of cognitive research in mathematics education focuses on detailed examinations of the learning process of students and how this process is affected by current innovations in the classroom, including collaborative learning and the use of computers and interactive software. Much of this work is supported by the learning framework of constructivism, a school of thought which is based on the work and writings of Jean Piaget. Piaget, a French psychologist in the mid-twentieth century, observed the learning behavior of children and concluded that individuals construct their own knowledge by creating mental structures which explain their …
Digital Filtering And Smoothing: A Student Simulation Project, Eric Gossett
Digital Filtering And Smoothing: A Student Simulation Project, Eric Gossett
ACMS Conference Proceedings 1997
A bug tracking problem is used to introduce students to filtering and smoothing real-time data. A predictor-corrector filter/smoother algorithm is developed and a simulation platform is provided so that students can program and test implementations of the filter/smoother. The platform includes the ability to animate the simulation.
The tracking problem: A small computer bug is traveling around the $x-y$ plane trying to avoid detection. We can eliminate the bug if we can produce a reasonably accurate approximation to its trajectory.
We have a bug detecting device which can be pointed at the plane. It can measure the $x$ and $y$ …
Using Java And Html For Linear Algebra Instruction, Jonathan R. Senning
Using Java And Html For Linear Algebra Instruction, Jonathan R. Senning
ACMS Conference Proceedings 1997
This paper addresses some of the issues involved with using the HTML, JavaScript and Java to develop and serve a sequence of laboratory modules for use in teaching linear algebra. Attention is paid to the rationale for this approach as opposed to the more traditional approach of laboratory exercises executed using MATLAB or some similar computational tool. Several methods to display mathematics with HTML are described. Some implementation detail and a brief description of the HTML and Java based Linear Algebra Visualization Assistant (LAVA) is presented.

Klz: A Prototype X Protocol Compression System, Ka-Tak Lo
Klz: A Prototype X Protocol Compression System, Ka-Tak Lo
Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses
One of the most commonly used graphics protocol is the X Protocol, enabling programs to display graphics images. When running the X Protocol over the network, a lot of structured data (messages with fields) need to be transmitted. Delays can be detected by human users when connected through a low-bandwidth network. The solution is to compress the X protocol. XRemote, a network version of the X Protocol, uses Dictionary-based compression. In XRemote, strings are recorded in the dictionary. When a string repeats, its index in the dictionary is transmitted. Higher Bandwidth X (HBX) uses statistical modeling techniques instead. A context …
Performing Bmmc Permutations Efficiently On Distributed-Memory Multiprocessors With Mpi, Thomas H. Cormen
Performing Bmmc Permutations Efficiently On Distributed-Memory Multiprocessors With Mpi, Thomas H. Cormen
Computer Science Technical Reports
This paper presents an architecture-independent method for performing BMMC permutations on multiprocessors with distributed memory. All interprocessor communication uses the MPI function MPI_Sendrecv_replace(). The number of elements and number of processors must be powers of 2, with at least one element per processor, and there is no inherent upper bound on the ratio of elements per processor. Our method transmits only data without transmitting any source or target indices, which conserves network bandwidth. When data is transmitted, the source and target processors implicitly agree on each other's identity and the indices of the elements being transmitted. A C-callable implementation of …

Study Of Muon-Pair Production At Centre-Of-Mass Energies From 20 To 136 Gev With The Aleph Detector, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The total cross section and the forward-backward asymmetry for the process e+e− → μ+μ−(nγ) are measured in the energy range 20–136 GeV by reconstructing the effective centre-of-mass energy after initial state radiation. The analysis is based on the data recorded with the ALEPH detector at LEP between 1990 and 1995, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 143.5 pb−1. Two different approaches are used: in the first one an exclusive selection of events with hard initial state radiation in the energy range 20–88 GeV is directly compared with the Standard Model predictions showing good agreement. In the second one, all …

Source-Aware Multidatabase Query Processing, Ee Peng Lim, Yinyan Cao, Roger Hsiang-Li Chiang
Source-Aware Multidatabase Query Processing, Ee Peng Lim, Yinyan Cao, Roger Hsiang-Li Chiang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We introduce a multidatabase model to represent the information that derives from different local databases. This model, known as Tuple-Source (TS) relational model, accommodates tuples from different local databases by attaching them with their source information in the global relations which are also known as TS-relations. In other words, a source attribute is implicit in every TS-relation. To manipulate the global relations, we have developed the TSSQL query language and implemented a distributed query processor to process such queries. In this paper, we report our distributed query processing architecture and algorithms. Our architecture consists of a query mediator and a …
