Contemporary literary research is based on parameters and methods which do not appear to have evolved similar to other fields of inquiry. This study situates Chinese cinema among three interconnected concerns that all pertain to transnational cultural politics: (1) the impact of international film festivals on the productions of Chinese films and their reception in the West; (2) the inadequacy of the “Fifth Generation” as a critical term for Chinese film studies; and (3) the need to address the current methodological confinement in Western studies of Chinese cinema. I ask the question: is it possible to posit a Return that is historically informed by the disjunctive, fractured narratives of the Caribbean, one which both challenges and negotiates what Spivak has termed the neo-colonial "structures of violence?" Likewise, can the Caribbean subject articulate a space for communal identity, self-representation, and historical agency, in opposition to the disempowering dissection of the (neo-)colonizing gaze? I would argue that such a discursive project is possible, indeed necessary, in order to continue developing the insurgent narrative of resistance to colonialism that traces its roots back to the arrival of the first white colonizers …

This thesis is an examination of the autobiography of Parley P. Pratt in light of current American autobiography research, intended to assert its worthiness for greater consideration by scholars of American culture. The findings suggest that the Autobiography of Parley P. Pratt is comparable to other works now included in the canon of American autobiography such as Jonathan Edward's "Personal Narrative," Benjamin Franklin's Autobiography and Henry David Thoreau's Walden. Critical theories on the above autobiographies are applied to the Autobiography of Parley P. Pratt in order to show its applicability to the current dialogue of American autobiography. Vicente Blasco Ibáñez, considered one of the foremost Spanish naturalistic authors, wrote between 1894 and 1928. He is best known for his first group of novels, the Valencian series (1894-1902), which represent his most naturalistic period. Little critical investigation has been made regarding the aesthetical qualities of these novels. Most research considers either the biographical, historical or scientific approach or arrives at conclusions without demonstrating sufficient analysis. Discussion of the novelist’s artistry is usually superficial or vague. Long dismissed as an immature play with no intrinsic merit, Sir Clyomon and Sir Clamydes (ca. 1570-1583) quite thoroughly debates issues of contemporary political interest. This essay seeks to restore Clyomon from its undistinguished position in Renaissance studies by showing how it dramatically supports Queen Elizabeth's use of chivalry as an ideology of power and order and criticizes military adventurism. The range of topics covered in the papers presented at Flagstaff in April amply testify to the extraordinary variety of life and thought in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The papers are a tribute, too, to the vigor of contemporary scholarly interest in these two great historical-cultural epochs. (This review, it should be noted, is based upon the full paper in some instances and in others on both the paper and the pleasure of having been present at the time it was delivered, yet there are also several papers reported here of which I have seen only an abstract.)

In Mexican Literature 1947 is a key date for the novel because of the publication of Al filo del agua, by Agustín Yáñez. With it, the cycle of novels known as “Novelas de la Revolución” ends and a new cycle, “Novelas contemporáneas”, begins. In the In the present study, however, the author considers La vida inútil de Pito Pérez, by José Rubén Romero, published in 1938 as a contemporary novel. Romero’s book and that of Yáñez are examined in this work along with Juan Rulfo’s Pedro Páramo, 1955, and La muerte de Artemio Cruz, 1962, by Carlos Fuentes.

Silvina Bullrich's literary career spans over four decades and covers every genre except theatre. She is considered a national institution in Argentina where her fame rivals that of her former mentor, Jorge Luis Borges. Despite her national renown, Bullrich often has been condemned by critics who base their judgments on non-literary criteria. In the United States, recent doctoral dissertations have considered Bullrich as part of a group of either political or women writers. One of the most patently visible facets of Chicanos' efforts to assert themselves through a form of cultural nationalism has been a burgeoning corpus of creative literature which, above all, has served as a vehicle of self-knowledge. In their task of accumulating evidence for a collective self-portrait, Chicano writers have explored their past, revitalized and mythesized their cultural values, indicted Anglo culture and confronted the question of what it means to be human.
