An Analysis Of Communication For Foster Parents: Interpersonal, Small Group, And Public Speaking Skills Necessary For Foster Parenting, Kaitlyn Randall
An Analysis Of Communication For Foster Parents: Interpersonal, Small Group, And Public Speaking Skills Necessary For Foster Parenting, Kaitlyn Randall
Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota Journal
Communication is a core aspect of what foster parents do every day. However, communication research focusing on foster parents is limited. Foster parents should understand interpersonal communication, small group communication, and public speaking. Understanding the basic principles of these communication disciplines will help foster parents succeed in their role. Interpersonal communication creates relationships between the foster parent and child through inclusion, control, and affection. Small group communication aspects of group roles, meeting facilitation, and conflict management are used in interactions with caseworkers. The public speaking skills of preparation and practice are used during court proceedings, orientations, and support groups. Providing …

Confirmation Report: Modelling Interlocutor Confusion In Situated Human Robot Interaction, Na Li
Confirmation Report: Modelling Interlocutor Confusion In Situated Human Robot Interaction, Na Li
Reports
Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) is an important but challenging field focused on improving the interaction between humans and robots such to make the interaction more intelligent and effective. However, building a natural conversational HRI is an interdisciplinary challenge for scholars, engineers, and designers. It is generally assumed that the pinnacle of human- robot interaction will be having fluid naturalistic conversational interaction that in important ways mimics that of how humans interact with each other. This of course is challenging at a number of levels, and in particular there are considerable difficulties when it comes to naturally monitoring and responding to the …
Evaluating Biblical And Theological Training In The Developing World Through The Lens Of Communication Infrastructure Theory, David Keep
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Research that shows the impact of training throughout the developing world is positive and limited. Informed by Communication Infrastructure Theory (CIT) and framed within the Cybernetic tradition, this study expands communication research to understand the impact of biblical and theological training among marginalized people in San Gabriel Mixtepec, Oaxaca, Mexico. Through semi-structured interviews and direct observation, this qualitative research study shows how the curriculum developed by Shepherd’s Global Classroom (SGC) and deployed through Ezra Biblical Seminary in San Gabriel works to equip believers and church leaders in their developing-world context. The storytelling network of CIT is examined and discovered to …

Learning From Death: Health Education Considerations For Medical Tourists, Caregiving Companions, And Medical Tourism Providers, Alicia Mason, Sakshi Bhati, Ran Jiang, Elizabeth Spencer
Faculty Submissions
Medical tourism is a process in which a consumer travels from one’s health jurisdiction to receive biomedical treatments or services, thus becoming a patient. This chapter explores how global media frame cases of patient death associated with the medical tourism (MT) process between 2009-2019. A qualitative content analysis of 50 patient mortality cases found that (1) a majority of media representations of medical tourism patient death are of middle-class, minority females between 25-55 years of age seeking cosmetic surgery internationally; (2) sudden death, grief, and bereavement counseling is noticeably absent from medical tourism providers (MTPs); and (3) the acknowledgement of …

Confronting An Extractive Racialised Genre System: Black Lives Matter, Royalty Recovery And Musical Reparations, Olufunmilayo B. Arewa, Matt Stahl
FIMS Publications
Introduction to the chapter:
The political-economic practices of commercial music production may be plausibly analogised to a relation of plunder and redistribution, clothed in and (legally) legitimated by recording and publishing contracts. For African Americans, this was particularly true during the pre-Civil Rights era. During that time, entrepreneurs and companies that offered recording, song writing and publishing contracts to African Americans were able to take advantage of social-structural contexts of considerable societal racial exploitation and violence targeted at African Americans. Further, for all artists prior to (and even during) the digital era, the realities of the commercial recording industry have …

Building Solidarity Between Minority Groups, Seonwoo Kim
Building Solidarity Between Minority Groups, Seonwoo Kim
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Although a considerable number of scholars agree that an intergroup coalition among minorities will be more powerful in changing biased perceptions, regulations, and policies (e.g., Burson & Godfrey, 2020; Lane et al., 2019), cross-minority solidarity is challenging due to the inherent difficulties in establishing a shared goal and reaching a consensus on methods and tactics (Gawerc, 2021; Rogers, 2004) and competing policy stances and stereotypes (Hope, 2019; Nopper, 2006). Numerous instances of social movements that failed due to the failure of coalitions to form have been documented in the literature (e.g., Almeida, 2010; Ferree & Roth, 1998; Gelb & Shogan, …

Farming For Nebraska's Future: Regenerative Agriculture In The Cornhusker State, Megan Buffington
Farming For Nebraska's Future: Regenerative Agriculture In The Cornhusker State, Megan Buffington
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
This reporting project started, as many do, with questions: Who is practicing sustainable agriculture in Nebraska? Why? What is stopping others from doing the same? And what even is sustainable agriculture?
Over the course of this project, I spoke with farmers, ranchers and academics, eventually learning that regenerative agriculture is the more widely used term, and there are a wide swath of systemic barriers preventing more producers from adopting it. But for those who do take the leap, the unconventional method leads to personal and financial well-being traditional agriculture never provided. The final project is made up of three articles …

Places For Young People To Influence Decision-Making: Developing Means For Democracy Education In Finland, Anna Suorsa
Places For Young People To Influence Decision-Making: Developing Means For Democracy Education In Finland, Anna Suorsa
Democracy & Education
This study examines young people's (ages 13–18) perceptions of their own opportunities to influence the development of their own environment through an experiment aimed at developing civic democracy in Finland in 2020–2021. The purpose of the experiment was to try out new ways of participating and influencing meaningfully for young people at school, to encourage young people to bring up grievances, and to support them in finding solutions that end up in decision-making. The experiment involved young people from different educational institutions (secondary school, upper secondary school, and vocational schools), teachers, and local decision-makers. Data was gathered with ethnographic methods …

What Outfit Shall The Protagonist Wear? New Models Of Revenue Creation In Online Fiction Platforms, John Rodzvilla
What Outfit Shall The Protagonist Wear? New Models Of Revenue Creation In Online Fiction Platforms, John Rodzvilla
Emerson Authors, Researchers, & Creators
Online fiction platforms like Wattpad, Tapas, Choices, and Episode have created new models of digital storytelling that serve billions of readers a month who access the content through apps and websites. Through a free-to-read (F2R) model these platforms offer access to thousands of online prose narratives. Instead of requiring money upfront for access, they have found a way to monetize narrative through ad-supported serialization and paywalls. Some companies have also begun to offer reader customization through microtransactions similar to those in the mobile game world. This paper examines how these platforms are using the F2R model to create a compelling …

An Exploration Of Defensive Mediatization Strategies And Motherhood Media Decision-Making, Emily B. Young
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This quantitative study focused on media-related decision-making in motherhood, with mediatization theory serving as a framework for the research. The study began with an overview of recent changes to motherhood and family media use. The purpose of this study was to explore the problem of how mothers make decisions about their children’s media use. After providing a basic overview of the changes to motherhood and family media use, as well as establishing the purpose and problem for the study, the literature on relevant topics for this study was discussed. Primarily, the literature review focused on mediatization theory. Next, the survey …
How The Input-Process-Output Model Affects The Decoding Of Internal Strategic Financial Communication By Non-Financial Branch Managers, Andrew James Schell
How The Input-Process-Output Model Affects The Decoding Of Internal Strategic Financial Communication By Non-Financial Branch Managers, Andrew James Schell
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this instrumental case study was to explore how non-financial branch managers at US mortgage companies processed the decoding of internal strategic financial communication (ISFC) when the message was encoded by the language of numbers (LON). The LON includes Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). A non-financial branch manager is an individual who manages a mortgage company branch office and may not possess LON decoding proficiency. This lack of LON decoding proficiency could result in ISFC decoding errors, potentially resulting in unintended financial consequences. Financial miscommunication is connected to the failure of over 50% of new small businesses each …
Augmented Reality Experience And Perception Theory: A Quantitative Study Using Eye Tracking To Investigate How Mobile Phone Users Perceive Multiple Layered Depths, Donna C. Templeton
Augmented Reality Experience And Perception Theory: A Quantitative Study Using Eye Tracking To Investigate How Mobile Phone Users Perceive Multiple Layered Depths, Donna C. Templeton
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This research explores how mobile augmented reality experiences are perceived and interacted with by using a quantitative eye-tracking study to record user eye movement behavior. Visual communication is vital in today’s increasingly visual society and current technology gives evidence of much promise in adding additional engagement, information, and interactivity through augmented reality. Though smartphone technology allows all smartphone users to access and experience browser-based augmented reality, there is little research on design aspects from a user experience perspective, such as the influence of layered depths in an augmented scene. The purpose of this study was to explore the variable of …

In an 1870 letter, Emily Dickinson described poetry this way: “If I read a book and it makes my whole body so cold no fire can ever warm me, I know that is poetry. If I feel physically as if the top of my head were taken off, I know that is poetry. These are the only way I know it. Is there any other way?” During the twentieth century, the Russian poet Anna Akhmatova wrote poetry that embodies Dickinson’s intense definition. My …

Harnessing The Power Of The Bts Army Fandom To #Stopasianhate And Empower The Next Generation Of Aapi Leaders, Nicole Santero
Community Engagement Expo Research Posters
ARMY, fans of the widely popular music group BTS, has become one of the largest and most influential fan communities in popular culture. Music fans have long been misunderstood and dismissed, yet fandoms like ARMY have reshaped that narrative by demonstrating remarkable capacity for global collective action, teaching us important lessons in grassroots mobilization, social movements, and activism. Drawing on the fandom's impact and key strategies such as empowerment messaging, resource deployment, and leveraging media platforms, this poster presentation from the 2023 UNLV Community Engagement Expo details examples of how ARMY's power and strategies can be applied in a real-world …
