Use Of Departmental Review As Part Of The Assessment Process, James H. Mcbath Apr 1990

Use Of Departmental Review As Part Of The Assessment Process, James H. Mcbath

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article examines departmental review as a central instrument in outcomes assessment for higher education communication programs. Situating the practice within escalating legislative accreditation and board level accountability, it traces common anxieties that reviews may prompt program closure or reconfiguration. Through case analysis, this article identifies pitfalls arising from unclear objectives, partial data, and uneven participation, and then articulates two guiding principles: evaluation must rest on transparent standards and on evidence grounded in disciplinary knowledge. Nontraditional Approaches To Assessment, Ellen A. Hay

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article examines innovative assessment strategies in higher education designed to satisfy accreditation mandates for demonstrable oral communication proficiency while fostering learning outcomes. It then analyzes the assessment center model, adapted from industrial practice, where students engage in simulated organizational scenarios, submit written and oral artifacts, receive multi rater evaluations, and reflect through self assessment. By comparing these approaches, this article emphasizes the reciprocal relationship between assessment and pedagogy, underscores the …
