Soap Talk: The Appeal Of Soap Opera To Contemporary Female Audiences, Catherine M. Drain Jan 1996

Soap Talk: The Appeal Of Soap Opera To Contemporary Female Audiences, Catherine M. Drain

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

The purpose of this paper is to explain why women find contemporary television soap operas so enjoyable to consume. The primary methodology that is utilized to accomplish this purpose is a structural analysis of the eleven characteristics of soap opera proposed by communication cultural analyst Mary Ellen Brown (1994). To support this analysis, examples are taken from a currently airing television soap opera, "All My Children," which can be seen daily at noon on ABC. Implications for further study of the soap opera genre are then discussed. First, however, a brief history of soap opera and several of its contemporary …

Communicative Form And Theological Style, Paul A. Soukup Jan 1996

Communicative Form And Theological Style, Paul A. Soukup

Communication

This essay explores the ways in which the form of communication affects the content of communication-how the choice of word determines the thought-with special emphasis on theology. Its purpose is pragmatic: How can we, today, concretely reflect on communicative form in such a way as to improve the teaching and the practice of theology? The essay moves in three steps: First come some general comments on communicative form, bolstered by an historical review of the clearest form-content influences; next follow some remarks on contemporary communicative style and form; finally, some brainstorming about theological disciplines and communication concludes the essay.

Scientific Management In Higher Education: Concerns And Using Collaborative School Management To Improve Communication, Chas Koermer, John Petelle Jan 1996

Scientific Management In Higher Education: Concerns And Using Collaborative School Management To Improve Communication, Chas Koermer, John Petelle

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article discusses problems associated with using scientific management in the improvement of communication in higher education in the U.S. Within the spectrum of higher education, it is reasonable to assume that a degree of hierarchical control permeates. That is, every member reports to some higher authority and receives direction from the authority. The faculty member is involved in roles of both management and governance requiring participation in both endeavors. This approach to management is also countenanced in the academic arena exemplified by verbal directives. The paper bureaucracy is another burdensome aspect of scientific management that exists in higher education.

A Comparison Of Leadership Practices Used By Male And Female Communication Department Chairpersons, Trudy L. Hanson Jan 1996

A Comparison Of Leadership Practices Used By Male And Female Communication Department Chairpersons, Trudy L. Hanson

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article compares the leadership practices used by male and female communication department chairpersons in the U.S. The position of academic department chair has the potential to be one which most influences faculty, and yet it remains the most underrated position in a college or university. The problem to be explored in leadership in higher education is the participation of women. Research in the communication behavior of men and women managers has revealed that neither men nor women seemed to favor characteristics defined as feminine. Women in higher education seem to face a much more difficult path to tenure than …

The Differential Impact Of A Basic Public Speaking Course On Perceived Communication Competencies In Class, Work, And Social Contexts, Michael W. Kramer, J. S. Hinton Jan 1996

The Differential Impact Of A Basic Public Speaking Course On Perceived Communication Competencies In Class, Work, And Social Contexts, Michael W. Kramer, J. S. Hinton

Basic Communication Course Annual

Communication departments generally choose between a public speaking and a hybrid course of their basic course. Previous research has shown that students' perceptions of their communication competencies increase after completing a hybrid course (Ford & Wolvin, 1992, 1993). After noting similarities between public speaking and hybrid courses, this study examines students' perceptions of their competencies after completing a public a speaking course.

Results indicated that students' perceptions of their competencies changed significantly in class, work, and social contacts in such areas as public speaking, interpersonal and group communication, interviewing, listening, and self-confidence. The largest gains were in perceptions of their …

Reading Dolly : The Reading Practices Of Adolescent Girls, Suzanne Fleming Jan 1996

Reading Dolly : The Reading Practices Of Adolescent Girls, Suzanne Fleming

Theses : Honours

In recent years the representation and participation of women in the media has received a great deal of attention. So too, has the area of language and gender. Research and discussions around these two fields intersect to provide a context for this research project. Unlike any study located to date, this study provides a theoretical exploration of practices girls employ when reading Dolly, an Australian teen magazine aimed at adolescent females. The project involves 11 year-eight girls from two metropolitan schools and aims to answer questions regarding the reading practices they employ when reading Dolly, the meanings they make with …

Mentoring Relationships Amongst Women In Public Relations, Kristen Kahles Jan 1996

Mentoring Relationships Amongst Women In Public Relations, Kristen Kahles

Masters Theses

Mentoring is an old tool used to advance the education and/or careers of individuals that dates back to ancient Greece; it has recently reemerged in organizational and business settings. I examine mentoring relationships among women in the public relations profession. In this study my purpose is to determine how women are affected in a same sex mentoring relationship in the public relations field. One hundred surveys were distributed to female practitioners in the New York and Chicago areas. Thirty-five were returned, yielding a 35% response rate. In addition, six in depth interviews were conducted with six female public relations professionals …

Influence Of Physical Fitness On Susceptibility To Noise-Induced Temporary Threshold Shift In Females, Stacy Claire Bukatz Jan 1996

Influence Of Physical Fitness On Susceptibility To Noise-Induced Temporary Threshold Shift In Females, Stacy Claire Bukatz

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study investigated the influence of physical fitness on susceptibility to noise-induced temporary hearing loss in 33 females of various fitness levels, and the relationship between temporary threshold shift (TTS) and distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) measurements. Behavioral audiometric thresholds and DPOAE measurements were obtained at 2000, 3000, 4000, and 6000 Hz prior to and immediately after 10 minutes of exposure to 108-dB SPL narrow-band noise centered at 2000 Hz. The greatest TTS and largest reduction in DPOAE amplitude occurred at·3000 Hz. However, no significant correlation was observed between TTS and DPOAE at any frequency or between any of the …

Dimensions Of Social Support: Cardiac Patients And Their Spouses, Nichole Louise Egbert Jan 1996

Dimensions Of Social Support: Cardiac Patients And Their Spouses, Nichole Louise Egbert

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Social support has been shown to benefit the recovery of cardiac patients on many levels. However, this general conclusion has not yet been conclusively defined regarding variables such as the role of gender in the provision and receipt of support and the specific effects of the marriage relationship on the healing process. Furthermore, researchers are still working on the best construct to describe and operationalize the various types and modes of social support for the cardiac patient. This study investigated how men as compared to women, and patients as compared to spouses reported the frequency and value of 4 different …

An Investigation Into Attitudes Surrounding Facilitated Communication, Jessica N. Peregoy

Theses & Honors Papers

This qualitative study investigated facilitators' opinions regarding facilitated communication (FC). Six individuals who have experience and/or training in the use of this method were interviewed. Issues discussed included FC's effectiveness for individuals other than those with autism, training prior to using the method, need for modifications in the method, and validity of the communication arising from the use of FC. Recurring themes were constructed from comments made during the course of the interviews. Each theme was supported by comments made by at least half of the facilitators. These themes were dissatisfaction with formal training, application to other populations, acknowledgement of …
