Taking Nothing For Granted In Management Education: A Systemic Perspective On The Role Of Reflective Questioning, A. Georges L. Romme, Inge C. M. Van Seggelen-Damen Apr 2015

Taking Nothing For Granted In Management Education: A Systemic Perspective On The Role Of Reflective Questioning, A. Georges L. Romme, Inge C. M. Van Seggelen-Damen

Organization Management Journal

Questioning is one of the most critical behaviors in management education and learning. In this article we explore the antecedents, processes, and outcomes of reflective questioning, as a key element of management learning and education. Reflective questioning involves raising tentative, nonrhetorical questions. By reviewing and synthesizing the literature, we develop a model of reflective questioning in the form of a causal loop diagram. This model implies that reflective questioning can be taught through particular forms of management education, but is also contingent on the psychological safety of the group setting, the individual need for cognition, and challenging tasks and experiences.

News Coverage Of U.S. Mothers Of Soldiers During The Vietnam War, Karen L. Slattery, Ana C. Garner Apr 2015

News Coverage Of U.S. Mothers Of Soldiers During The Vietnam War, Karen L. Slattery, Ana C. Garner

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

The press of World Wars I and II depicted patriotic mothers as Spartan-like in their support of the nation's war effort. During the Vietnam War, another maternal image emerged to share cultural space with the Spartan mother, that of the goddess Thetis who objected to her son's participation in the Trojan War. This alternative maternal symbol more closely resembles the archetypal image of the peacetime good mother, who cares for her children and resists sending them into harm's way. This study documents coverage of maternal opposition to the Vietnam War against the backdrop of coverage of US mothers of soldiers …

The Salience Of University Dressors In The Work For Social Justice, Esmeralda C. Chapa Feb 2015

The Salience Of University Dressors In The Work For Social Justice, Esmeralda C. Chapa

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

Social justice work is as relevant in the 21st century as it has ever been. Society abounds with inequalities in the various facets of life. In today’s society some continue to believe in the influence of universities to promote social justice work, however this work may be cast as the responsibility of those that need the change and not of those who know how to get change accomplished. The research questions for this study are: what are the institutional constraints to Dressor engagement in social justice work? How do Dressors overcome institutional constraints to social justice work? The theoretical basis …

Between Autonomy And Alienation: Creating The Self Via Sex-Reassignment Surgery, Annthony M. Duffey Jan 2015

Between Autonomy And Alienation: Creating The Self Via Sex-Reassignment Surgery, Annthony M. Duffey

sprinkle: an undergraduate journal of feminist and queer studies

Upon a consideration of self-creation and the introduction of the gender binary a potential limiter of autonomy, sexQreassignment surgery (SRS) beckons significant reconsideration by the biomedical/ethical field, ranging from the transpersons who undergo it to the preoperative processes that oversee it. Autonomy does not underlie a majority of SRS on prevailing biomedical hypotheses; SRS is granted to those candidates who report symptoms of dysfunction and denied to candidates who do not confirm such suspicions. This research proposes that, upon his or her failure or refusal to demonstrate some understanding of the potentially limiting influence of the gender binary, a candidate …

Sexual Assault: Whose Fault Is It Anyway In A Rape Culture?, Grace Pappas Jan 2015

Sexual Assault: Whose Fault Is It Anyway In A Rape Culture?, Grace Pappas

sprinkle: an undergraduate journal of feminist and queer studies

Sexual assault has recently gained attention as a prevalent issue in American culture, particularly on college campuses. While in some places much is being done to raise awareness and end this form of gendered violence, too often fingers are pointed at possible causes rather than intertwined as hands held together in the fight against this injustice. Through an examination of empirical research, it is clear that the issue of sexual assault stems from and is perpetuated by a rape culture, a culture in which we are all a part. This paper argues that if we are to fight sexual assault, …
