Brain Sex: How The Media Report And Distort Brain Research, Janet M. Bing

Testosterone gives men a particular advantage in that it is focusing and galvanizing a brain that is already, by its very structure, more focused than the female. Remember that the male brain is a tidier affair, each function in its special place . . . Biology, then, every bit as much as social conditioning, militates against a strongly feminine role in areas traditionally regarded as male preserves.

An Investigation Of Audience Receptiveness To Non-Native Teaching Assistants, Eunkyong Lee Yook Jan 1999

An Investigation Of Audience Receptiveness To Non-Native Teaching Assistants, Eunkyong Lee Yook

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article examines the reliance of U.S. campuses on international teaching assistants (ITA) for staffing undergraduate course and the strategies that may affect ratings of their speaking competence. This increasing reliance has led to student complaints about incomprehensibility of ITA. This problem has been examined by looking through the eyes of the students, administrators and taxpayers. Therefore, the responsibility had been placed on the ITA, whose burden it was to learn the language and culture more fully. The goal of having ITA learn the language and culture better was eclipsing another important issue that needs consideration, the issue of teaching …

How Basic Course Directors Evaluate Teaching Assistants: Social Constructionism In Basiccourseland, Nancy L. Buerkel-Rothfuss Jan 1999

How Basic Course Directors Evaluate Teaching Assistants: Social Constructionism In Basiccourseland, Nancy L. Buerkel-Rothfuss

Basic Communication Course Annual

This essay examines the ways basic course directors assess their teaching staff. In particular, the study describes ways course directors from a variety of disciplines use language to evaluate teaching competence and to differentiate among staff members with regard to job performance. As would be expected, most course directors in this sample used evaluation terms such as good/bad or effective/ineffective. Only a few used other types of differentiation schemes, such as those based on maturity of the teaching assistant or attitudes toward teaching.

Creating A New University Through Object Oriented Enterprise Modeling: A Study Of Communications Knowledge Management & Distributed Cognition, Armando A. Arias Jr., Beryl L. Bellman

SSGS Faculty Publications and Presentations

Enterprise based object oriented (OO) and Unified Modeling Language (UML) modeling makes it possible to build the needed visual environments to organize people, technologies and activities (Arias, 1999d). In our modeling approach, the focus is on "things and relationships between things" described in commonly used terms. The modeling software bridges the so-called "semantic gap" between the people and the computer language (Booch, Rumbaugh & Jacobson, 1999). An object can be a product, a process, a person, a team, a company, an application or the inter-relationship between other objects. Objects can be pictured on the screen as maps formed by personalized …

Integrating Web-Based Training Into Communication Scholarship Of Computer-Mediated Communication, Brian P. Johanpeter Jan 1999

Integrating Web-Based Training Into Communication Scholarship Of Computer-Mediated Communication, Brian P. Johanpeter

Masters Theses

As interest and use of the Internet through the World Wide Web increases, it becomes necessary for the Communication Discipline to reexamine its approach to studying computer-mediated communication. A meta-analysis of the discipline's research in this area provides insight into the scholarly history of this subject. Included in this analysis is an examination of the discipline's research in computer-based instruction, placed as a subcategory under computer-mediated communication. This study reveals a gaping hole in the communication scholarship of computer-mediated communication and offers suggestions as to how research of Web-based training might fill this gap. Additional discussion also reveals how research …

Transforming The Mediasphere : Sweden, A Case Study Of Conflicting Discourses In Socialist And Capitalist Broadcasting Values, Kent Ingemar Svensson Jan 1999

Transforming The Mediasphere : Sweden, A Case Study Of Conflicting Discourses In Socialist And Capitalist Broadcasting Values, Kent Ingemar Svensson

Theses : Honours

Sweden has undergone major changes in its mediasphere during the last twelve years, during which two oppositional forces have been particularly at work, capitalist and socialist. Goth those forces have influenced the direction in which the national mediasphere is transforming. The challenges of these political discourses, and responses from the parties involved regarding the role of the media in society, has been increasingly visible since the late 1950s, when the public service monopoly was first called into question. The Swedish socialist government has promoted and protected its non - commercial public service monopoly, through which they could mould national identity …

Meta-Ethnographic Development Of A Dialogue Methodology Applied To Organization Discourse, Shelley P. Gallup Jul 1998

Meta-Ethnographic Development Of A Dialogue Methodology Applied To Organization Discourse, Shelley P. Gallup

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A gap exists between theoretical stances that acknowledge the importance of dialogue as a dynamic within socially constructed structures, and "steersmanship" of those constructs--e.g., directing, intervening or transforming organizations. A "mechanism" which links theory with practice is missing, leaving practitioners with an acknowledgment of dialogue's central position, but without tools to enact this centrality in practice or research. This research constructs a conceptual model of dialogue, derived from the literature. Using this model as a base, the research seeks to generate a dialogue methodology bridging theory and practice with respect to organizational dialogue. The model, methodology, and research results are …

Communication To Reduce Embarrassment Between Individualistic And Collectivistic Cultures, Puvana Ganesan Jul 1998

Communication To Reduce Embarrassment Between Individualistic And Collectivistic Cultures, Puvana Ganesan

Institute for the Humanities Theses

lntercultural communication is an inherent aspect of life, and "as we move or are driven toward a global village and increasingly frequent cultural contact, we need more than simply greater factual knowledge of each other. We need, more specifically, to identify what might be called the 'rulebooks of meaning' that distinguish one culture from another" (Barnlund, 1975, p. 7).

This thesis sought to discover and contribute valuable content to this "rulebook of meaning" through intercultural communication between high context, collectivistic cultures and low-context, individualistic cultures in the situation of experiencing embarrassment. One goal of this study was to determine if …

Storybook Reading And The Speech Language Pathologist: A Fundamental Partnership For Speech And Language Intervention, Angela Crume Apr 1998

Storybook Reading And The Speech Language Pathologist: A Fundamental Partnership For Speech And Language Intervention, Angela Crume

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Because of the relationship between speech and language delays and reading difficulties, speech-language pathologists should be encouraged to include elements of reading in their therapy with preschoolers. By using such activities, speech-language pathologists should observe an increase in the language and speech abilities of their clients, regardless of the children's present abilities. Reading can be included in the context of therapy in various ways, but the most efficient way is to design thematic units with correlated prereading and postreading activities.

Speech Intelligibility Of 4-Year-Old Children, M. Jane Firestone Feb 1998

Speech Intelligibility Of 4-Year-Old Children, M. Jane Firestone

Dissertations and Theses

While speech-language pathologists routinely measure and report speech intelligibility when assessing young children with speech impairments, normative data have not been available for comparison purposes. When assessing children to determine if their communication abilities are at or below that of peers, one must first know what the normative standards are. Knowing the normal distribution for speech intelligibility at several ages would allow for more precise uses of the intelligibility information than is currently possible. Only a few available studies exist to allow tentative normative comparisons of speech intelligibility data.

The goals of this pilot study were to collect normative data …
