Expérimentation De Genres Médiatiques Par Les Pure Players En Afrique, Sokhna Fatou Seck-Sarr Jun 2022

Expérimentation De Genres Médiatiques Par Les Pure Players En Afrique, Sokhna Fatou Seck-Sarr

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

The article is part of the work on media changes induced by digital technologies. He postulates that the offbeat editorial approaches of African pure players are part of an objective of legitimization and that the methods of digital writing integrate economic logics. The analysis of generic journalistic genres (flash, surveys, interviews), offbeat genres (satire, rapped newspaper) and digital genres (fact-checking , data journalism) shows that the fact of alternating formats results from an objective of legitimation, of a competitive game but also of capturing the audience. Ultimately, it makes it possible to grasp the editorial, identity and economic logics that …

Peur, Médias Et Gouvernement En Afrique, Alexie Tcheuyap Jun 2022

Peur, Médias Et Gouvernement En Afrique, Alexie Tcheuyap

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

This article examines the theoretical and practical interconnectedness that crosses fear, media and governing practices. It uses examples from African countries, especially Cameroon, to investigate the ways in which the media are instrumentalized to draw on fear of the Other in general and of opposition leaders in particular in order to support authoritarian regimes. Not only does it focus on the structural changes that lead to a more subtle media control in spite of an apparent liberalization, but it also further describes the discursive devices used to generate and perpetuate fear.

The recent political history of Cameroon has been marked by an important civil disobedience movement (operation town) which almost brought down the State. Although this period of crisis has often been analysed, it must be mentioned that such analysis has not sufficiently highlighted the fact that “the operation ghost town” was strongly reported and most times promoted by the print media notably: Challenge Hebdo, Le Messager and La Nouvelle Expression. The present article seeks to analyse the relationship between the media and the political actors during the 1990s, to review the professional code of practice of journalism in …

Presse Écrite Burkinabè, Innovations Numériques Et Journalisme Double, Lassané Yaméogo

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

This article uses semi-directive interviews of a dozen media actors in Burkina Faso to examine the transformations of print journalism in the digital age. It reveals that digital technology does not fundamentally change the structure of the field. It rather keeps it in a sort of “in-between” journalism where traditional media routines combine with an appropriation of innovative practices both in the production of information and in its dissemination. That takes place in spite of relative contained economic crisis that makes this hybrid model possible.

Usages De L’Application Mobile Whatsapp Et Mutations Radiophoniques En Afrique, Henri Assogba Jun 2022

Usages De L’Application Mobile Whatsapp Et Mutations Radiophoniques En Afrique, Henri Assogba

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

Several radio stations on the African continent have been using or experimenting in recent years with the WhatsApp mobile application to gather and disseminate information. Knowing that voice exchange functionalities without the costs associated with conventional telephony are among those preferred by WhatsApp users in Africa, this study analyzes these uses of WhatsApp in relation to changes in the production and dissemination of radio content. The study is an illustration of the hybridization of the media system and shows that “traditional” mobile telephony is still popular with listeners in their on-air interventions.

Combattre Les Fausses Nouvelles En Tunisie : Retour Sur L’Expérience De Tunisia Check News, Nouha Belaid

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

Fact-checking has become an increasingly important practice, especially with the birth of the internet and social media. In Tunisia, the context of the 2019 presidential and legislative elections saw the birth of the Tunisia Check News platform managed by the Independent High Authority for Audiovisual Communication, with the collaboration of the public media. In this article, we present the context of the emergence of this platform within the community of Tunisian journalists. After analyzing the content of the website and the Facebook page, we interviewed the coordinator of this platform, on July 16, 2019 to find out more about the …

The birth and expansion of technology often bring about the death of ancient practices. This article asks whether the dynamics of information and communication technologies, which lead to the upheaval of different lifestyles, constitute an opportunity or a threat to Cameroon’s journalistic profession. It articulates the main declinations that explain the integration or not of ICTs in the business models of Cameroonian media.

Who Is Missing? Characterizing The Participation Of Different Demographic Groups In A Korean Nationwide Daily Conversation Corpus, Haewoon Kwak, Jisun An, Kunwoo Park Jun 2022

Who Is Missing? Characterizing The Participation Of Different Demographic Groups In A Korean Nationwide Daily Conversation Corpus, Haewoon Kwak, Jisun An, Kunwoo Park

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A conversation corpus is essential to build interactive AI applications. However, the demographic information of the participants in such corpora is largely underexplored mainly due to the lack of individual data in many corpora. In this work, we analyze a Korean nationwide daily conversation corpus constructed by the National Institute of Korean Language (NIKL) to characterize the participation of different demographic (age and sex) groups in the corpus.

Why, New York City? Gauging The Quality Of Life Through The Thoughts Of Tweeters, Sheryl Williams Jun 2022

Why, New York City? Gauging The Quality Of Life Through The Thoughts Of Tweeters, Sheryl Williams

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

As a resource for social data, Twitter’s platform has been used to measure the quality of life through sentiment analysis. This capstone project explores another methodological technique—querying Twitter data around specific keyword terms to determine dominant topics, word patterns, and sentiment leanings in a geographical area. Focusing on New York City and Los Angeles for comparative analysis, the keyword term “why” will be used to build a Python analysis around topic modeling and sentiment analysis. Using this approach, the analysis reveals social and cultural differences, the overall sentiment of tweets, and subjects of interest to tweeters.

Look At All Those Big Knobs! Online Audio Technology Discourse And Sexy Gear Fetishes, Eliot Bates, Samantha Bennett Jun 2022

Look At All Those Big Knobs! Online Audio Technology Discourse And Sexy Gear Fetishes, Eliot Bates, Samantha Bennett

Publications and Research

Despite a predominantly digital, 21st century music production landscape, analogue hardware professional audio technologies persist. In the discoursal throes of the leading online audio technology message forum Gearslutz, such technologies are routinely objectified, sexualized, fetishized and socialized into gear. Situated in a contemporary critical, interdisciplinary framework of fetish, masculinity and sexuality studies, this research interrogates how audio technologies manufactured and intended for music production contexts become sexy. Applying a mixed-mode methodology, including an intensive discourse, image and material-semiotic analysis of an ‘epic’ sexy gear thread, we collated extensive data about technological fetishization. Sexy gear discourse articulates themes of voyeurism, acquisition, …

Entities: A Field Of Imaginary Games, Thrasyvoulos Ioannis Kalaitzidis

LSU Master's Theses

With this body of work, I am looking for visual symbols that help communicate unuttered meanings through storytelling and stimulate an affectual response to the viewer. This exploration is presented in two different forms: a surreal sculptural installation and a board game. The installation consists of large-scale sculptures made from light and soft materials (polyurethane foam, plastic waste, paper) that are available to move inside the gallery, while the board game is presented as a set of 3D prints with instructions on how the participants can play it. The materials used in the installation suggest a way to transform waste …

The Current Place Of Corporate Identity Due To Changing Demographics And Corporate Communication Structures, Jordan Exline May 2022

The Current Place Of Corporate Identity Due To Changing Demographics And Corporate Communication Structures, Jordan Exline

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Our business environment is in a period of significant change. We have a new generation beginning to enter the workforce that requires different levels of communication and the phase-out and incorporation of remote/hybrid work resulting from the pandemic. Corporate identity could be at stake as a result, and how will that affect employees at a company? This study analyzes how corporate identity applies to the business of the future, what makes an impact on its connectivity, and the links between identity and work environment and communication. The goal is to understand what can be adjusted to increase the relevance of …

Because Potato, Candice Evers May 2022

Because Potato, Candice Evers

MFA in Illustration & Visual Culture

This thesis project explores the phenomenological qualities of the internet; asking, since the internet is difficult to grasp, what other modes of investigation might we have available? Using an investigative framework set forth by Jack Halberstam, this thesis declines to come to knowledge solely through understanding the formal, the structural, the highly visible and mainstream. The literature that I have gathered provides a range of modes for interrogating the simultaneously central and inconsequential subject of my thesis itself: the potato. Juxtaposing the physical, political and material conditions of the potato the internet’s least academic mode of knowing: the meme. Analyzing …

A Thematic Analysis Of How A Rhetor And A Demagogue Framed Their Presidencies, Megan Cooney, Shaundi Newbolt May 2022

A Thematic Analysis Of How A Rhetor And A Demagogue Framed Their Presidencies, Megan Cooney, Shaundi Newbolt

DU Undergraduate Research Journal Archive

This essay uses thematic analysis through the lens of framing theory to dissect how former U.S. President Barack Obama and former U.S. President Donald Trump created contrasting but successful frameworks of America to win their campaigns. The paper operates on the grounds that Obama is a rhetor and Trump is a demagogue. Frames consummate a multitude of themes that are created with rhetorical tools – namely figurative language. The storylines that are created by politicians can play an instrumental role in developing the constituent’s basis of reality. This study aims to unpack how a rhetor and a demagogue can use …

Moderation Effects Of Language Skills, Residential Tenure, And Education On Immigrants’ Learning From News, Yulia S. Medvedeva, Glenn M. Leshner May 2022

Moderation Effects Of Language Skills, Residential Tenure, And Education On Immigrants’ Learning From News, Yulia S. Medvedeva, Glenn M. Leshner

All Works

Authors of the knowledge gap hypothesis predicted television’s potential to narrow the gaps in some circumstances. This online experiment aimed to bound the conditions that facilitate the leveling role of audiovisual news for a foreign-born audience ( N = 137) residing in the United States. Results showed that audiovisual news narrowed the gaps by improving learning for those who scored low on language or U.S. education and by attenuating improvements in learning for those with high language or education scores. Conversely, text news widened the gaps by sizable gains in learning for those with better language or more education.

On The Use And Abuse Of Violence For Life: Affect, Witnessing, And Protest, Harrison Maurice Lucas May 2022

On The Use And Abuse Of Violence For Life: Affect, Witnessing, And Protest, Harrison Maurice Lucas

Theses - ALL

Following the murder of George Floyd in May of 2020 by police officer Derek Chauvin, a protest began in the city of Minneapolis that resulted in the burning down of the third precinct police building, the looting of a local Target, and the destruction of over one hundred buildings in the area. But despite this violence, the Minneapolis uprising sparked a wave of protests that spread to over sixty countries on every continent of the globe. Why was Floyd's murder so politically mobilizing? And why did this protest inspire so many others? To answer these questions, I treat the video …

The 1980 Refugee Act And A New Type Of National Apology, Shewit Mikael May 2022

The 1980 Refugee Act And A New Type Of National Apology, Shewit Mikael

Theses - ALL

In immigrant and refugee discourse studies, the overwhelming focus is on how the nation state excludes certain groups through bureaucratic and legislative practices. This thesis seeks to investigate how power manifests through inclusionary immigration practices such as the 1980 Refugee Act. These intentional acts of allowing entry are, at times, driven by perceptions that the nation has created crises and, in this way, allowing entry might be seen as a form of remediation or reparation. In my investigation of the 1975 and 1980 Refugee Acts, these acts appear to respond to the refugee crisis created by US involvement in Vietnam, …

A Content Analysis Of Queer Slang On Tik Tok, Kuri Benitez

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Social media platforms’ concentration of diversity and interactions has accelerated the rate of cultural change on the Internet. With the rise of Tik Tok, a video-sharing social media platform, language used by marginalized groups is being incorporated into the platform’s slang due to the rapid rotation of trends. This study aims to provide data to a new field related to Tik Tok culture and the effects of trends on marginalized groups.

Using qualitative content analysis, this article studies an LGBTQ+-inspired Tik Tok trend to determine if the portmanteau of “-ussy”’s meaning has changed from its original use and if trends …
