Disciplinary Narratives For Change: The Emergence Of Performance Studies Within Athe And Sca, Ronald E. Shields Jan 1994

Disciplinary Narratives For Change: The Emergence Of Performance Studies Within Athe And Sca, Ronald E. Shields

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article discusses the emergence of performance studies within the Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE) and the Speech Communication Association (SCA). During recent years, the debate surrounding the emergence of performance studies within the professional organizations, SCA and ATHE, has generated both heat and light. Both debates centered on pragmatic and seminal questions of disciplinary cohesiveness and relevancy; each side in both debates also argued their respective positions from particular interpretations of disciplinary history. In SCA, the issue involved a name change within a large and respected Division: in ATHE, the entire membership was challenged to consider the …

Picture Storybooks For Speech Communications Curriculum And Extracurricular Activities: An Annotated Bibliography, Del Brink Jan 1993

Picture Storybooks For Speech Communications Curriculum And Extracurricular Activities: An Annotated Bibliography, Del Brink

Graduate Research Papers

High school speech instructors frequently use picture storybooks in their curriculum. Picture storybooks differ from illustrated storybooks and picture books because they are the only type of the three that includes a balanced union between text and illustrations. An observation made at a high school speech contest in Iowa was the impetus for the formation of a bibliography of picture storybooks suitable for speech contest work. The researcher located, read, annotated, and categorized books reviewed in The Horn Book Magazine between 1989 and 1992. Of the 497 books read, 363 formed a bibliography of picture storybooks divided among these categories: …

Interpersonal Communication, Paul A. Soukup Jan 1992

Interpersonal Communication, Paul A. Soukup

Communication

Husband and wife, parent and child, priest and penitent, supervisor and employee, the 'happy hour' regulars at the corner pub - almost all of us communicate interpersonally every day. Important decisions can depend on success or failure in carrying out this process. Ultimately, it probably is of far more practical importance than mass media communication. But what do we really know about it?

As the author of this issue points out, only three of the last forty issues of Trends have focussed on topics which can be labelled 'interpersonal communication'. Most of the other's have been devoted to various aspects …

A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Preaching Of Robert Lee Russell, Ben F. Pennington Jan 1991

A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Preaching Of Robert Lee Russell, Ben F. Pennington

Masters Theses

Robert Lee Russell's pulpit oratory is analyzed through a review of the literature, personal interviews and critical study of three specific sermons. The consistency of idea content and effectiveness of the preaching is evaluated according to the concepts of rhetorical analysis delineated in Nilsen's (1957) Interpretive Funnction of the Critic. Robert Russell's concepts of man [existence], ideas [knowledge], and society [values] is examined through analysis of his sermons. The results of the analysis are compared to the literature on preaching, statements from interviews with him, and comments by leaders of his congregation. It is concluded that Russell is an …

Competitive Fire: An Historical Descriptive Analysis Of Adherence To Traditional Journalistic Tenets In Television News Coverage Of The Mark Hofmann Salt Lake City Bombings, B. William Silcock Jan 1989

Competitive Fire: An Historical Descriptive Analysis Of Adherence To Traditional Journalistic Tenets In Television News Coverage Of The Mark Hofmann Salt Lake City Bombings, B. William Silcock

Theses and Dissertations

Television news contains factors of time constraints and deadlines that add pressures to the underlying rules of objectivity, fairness, and bias. This study seeks to determine if the elements of "responsible journalism" dissipate in television news coverage of a highly significant, developing news story. In other words, how well do the rules hold up under pressure? The momentous story selected for observation was the Mark Hofmann bombings in Salt Lake City, Utah. The focus centered on the coverage by local stations rather than the network television news operations.

Improving Articulation Between High School And College, John M. Bradley Oct 1987

Improving Articulation Between High School And College, John M. Bradley

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article describes the Tennessee State-Wide School-College Collaborative for Educational Excellence, established in 1986 to improve the preparation of high school students entering college. The initiative created six task forces in English, mathematics, science, social studies, foreign language, and the arts, composed of secondary and postsecondary educators. Guided by the College Board’s Academic Preparation for College (Green Book) and the subject-specific “Rainbow Series,” the arts task force focused on theatre, music, dance, and visual arts. Recommendations emphasized sequential, discipline-based curricula, recognition of theatre as equal to art and music, enhanced teacher training, and competency testing. Sample high school theatre courses …

The Future Of Theatre Education: The Research University, Milly S. Barranger Aug 1987

The Future Of Theatre Education: The Research University, Milly S. Barranger

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article considers the future of theatre education in research universities, emphasizing both opportunities and challenges. Positive developments include the recognition of creative work as equivalent to scholarly research, the establishment of the MFA as a terminal degree in performance and production, and the growing prominence of dramaturgy as a field integrating scholarship with practice. Undergraduate curricula are increasingly modeled on broad-based core requirements, positioning theatre within general education. At the same time, declining budgets, faculty reductions, and overextended programs threaten stability. The article identifies two likely trends: greater emphasis on quality through program evaluation and national visibility, and stronger …

On January 21, 1985, the USU Department of Communication assumed the responsibility of providing editorial content for The Cache Citizen, a weekly newspaper published in Preston, Idaho. The department plans to continue operation of the paper, to provide professional experience for undergraduate and graduate students.

Second, it analyzes the transfer, identifies problems encountered and steps taken to correct them, and makes recommendations for …

The Phd In Theatre — A Vanishing Degree?, Richard Hornby Jan 1986

The Phd In Theatre — A Vanishing Degree?, Richard Hornby

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This essay examines the decline of doctoral study in theatre and argues for the continued necessity of the PhD as the primary academic credential in the field. The author documents a significant reduction in PhD programs, student enrollments, and degree completions since the late 1970s, and attributes this trend to both broader reductions in humanities hiring and the rapid expansion of MFA programs. The essay contends that many MFA graduates enter academic positions for which they lack sufficient academic and historical preparation, particularly in areas of dramatic literature, theory, and non realistic performance styles. The author asserts that this shift …

The Ritz Bar Or Abd: In Defense Of The Mfa, Peter Garvie Jan 1986

The Ritz Bar Or Abd: In Defense Of The Mfa, Peter Garvie

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This essay argues that the Master of Fine Arts is an appropriate terminal degree for university theatre faculty and challenges the claim that the Doctor of Philosophy represents a superior credential. The author emphasizes the realities of limited employment opportunities in both academic and professional theatre and contends that neither degree guarantees entry into those markets. The essay distinguishes the MFA as an advanced practice degree grounded in performance and production, whereas the PhD certifies research competence and does not necessarily attest to teaching or creative skill. Conservatory style training within a liberal arts setting is presented as legitimate and …

An historical study of the Church News has not been done previously. Hence, the intent of this study is to observe how the Church News has served its purposes and goals over its history. The study briefly outlines how the publication has developed and will …

A Theory Of Group Decision-Making Applied To The Bay Of Pigs And Cuban Missile Crisis Decisions, Lester Stephen Slade Jan 1973

A Theory Of Group Decision-Making Applied To The Bay Of Pigs And Cuban Missile Crisis Decisions, Lester Stephen Slade

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This study of political decision-making stressing the process of decision-making in a group setting is, in part, a reaction against traditional approaches of political analysis.

The study of international relations is overburdened with historical studies of the interaction between states. The classic approach to the study of a given decision by one government affecting another might be called the “rational actor model”. This model treats the state as the entity reaching the decision. The decision itself is seen as behavior that reflects a rational purpose or intent. The central concepts of the model center around the calculated weighing of goals, …

The purpose of this study was to determine the image of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as reflected in articles appearing in general national periodicals of the United States during the decade 1961-1970. All articles listed in Readers Guide to Periodical Literature under the heading "Mormons and Mormonism" or related topics were searched. A rating system as devised by Dr. Richard O. Cowan in his work "Momonism in National Periodicals" was implemented.
