Paul's Poetic License: Philippians 2:6-11 As A Hellenistic Hymn, Anna Groebe
Paul's Poetic License: Philippians 2:6-11 As A Hellenistic Hymn, Anna Groebe
Honors Program: Student Scholarship & Creative Works
In this paper, I use the scholarship surrounding Philippians 2:6-11 to identify it as a pre-Pauline hymn influenced by Greek culture. I use Dr. Arnold Levin’s essay “Paul’s Victory Song” as a springboard, investigating his arguments as well as other more well-known scholarship covering the passage. Dr. Levin argues that Philippians 2:6-11 is a Greek ode in the Aeolic style written in imitation of Pindar, with a clearly established meter. Although I disagree with Dr. Levin's methods and conclusion, I do not completely reject all of his argument. Philippians 2:6-11 does not have a clear meter as one might find …
The Tripartite Tributaries Of Ush, Alicia Cognevich
The Tripartite Tributaries Of Ush, Alicia Cognevich
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Inspired by Vladimir Nabokov’s metafiction novel Pale Fire and with Joseph Campbell’s research in comparative mythology and religion in mind, I explore the act of mythmaking and the composition of metafictional text in this work of fiction. The myth aspect combines elements of Classical, biblical, medieval, Romantic, and original materials to form a product that should strike readers as both familiar and alien, demonstrating Campbell’s notion of the monomyth as well as the ongoing tradition of mythmaking that continues to captivate both readers and writers. The metafictional portion of the text emphasizes a reader’s relationship to a work of fiction, …
The Epistulae Of Marcus Aurelius And Fronto: A Study And Commentary, Christopher W. Larabee
The Epistulae Of Marcus Aurelius And Fronto: A Study And Commentary, Christopher W. Larabee
Classical Mediterranean and Middle East Honors Projects
Long marginalized by Classical scholarship, the Letters (Epistulae) of Marcus Aurelius and Fronto serve as a powerful tool for use in the intermediate Latin classroom. This project proposes that through application of modern second language acquisition research, these letters can be brought to life to allow Latin teachers to take advantage of the ways their students learn language most naturally: through dialogue and conversation. By selecting letters based on principles established by second language acquisition research, the Epistulae can be presented in the format of an intermediate commentary and conversation, allowing students to learn Latin through their dialogical, …
Review Of The Dead Sea Scrolls And The Hasmonean State, By Hanan Eshel, Sidnie White Crawford
Review Of The Dead Sea Scrolls And The Hasmonean State, By Hanan Eshel, Sidnie White Crawford
Sidnie White Crawford Publications
The purpose of this volume by the late Hanan Eshel is to “summarize the contributions of the scrolls to the understanding of the political history of the Hasmonean state” (p. 1). Eshel, an archaeologist, linguist, and historian who edited several manuscripts from the Judaean Desert finds and excavated in the region of Qumran, was committed to mining the Qumran scrolls for historical information, a position that has come into a certain amount of disfavor in recent scholarship. However, in this balanced and careful volume, Eshel demonstrates that the Qumran scrolls do contain nuggets of valuable information that add to our …
Lutheran Christian Hebraism In The Time Of Solomon Glassius (1593-1656), Stephen G. Burnett
Lutheran Christian Hebraism In The Time Of Solomon Glassius (1593-1656), Stephen G. Burnett
Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications
Lutheran Hebrew scholarship in the era of Orthodoxy has suffered the same kind of scholarly neglect as theology from this period. A few Hebraists such as Wilhelm Schickard or Wolfgang Ratke have been the subjects of monographs or collections of articles, while others receive mention in university histories or books related to Jewish-Christian relations in early modern Germany. Only within the past decade have scholars addressed this facet of Reformation-era Christian Hebraism. Johann Anselm Steiger examined the use that Johann Gerhard and Solomon Glassius made of post-biblical Jewish literature, while Kenneth G. Appold has stressed the pivotal role that Hebrew …
Body As Battleground: Feminine Prophecy And Identity In The Ancient Mediterranean, Daniel M. Picus
Body As Battleground: Feminine Prophecy And Identity In The Ancient Mediterranean, Daniel M. Picus
Classical Mediterranean and Middle East Honors Projects
Women who spoke with the voice of divinity existed in the literature and mythologies of many cultures across the ancient Mediterranean. This paper examines six of these prophetesses from ancient Greek and Jewish traditions. It shows that prophecy is an experience deeply rooted in conceptions of the human body and “femininity.” By studying prophetesses in this light, I conclude that their bodies become battlegrounds for individual identities which may otherwise be subsumed by the god for whom they prophesy.

About The Gospel Of John: Considering P66: A Literary History, Or A Categorical Hermeneutic, Christopher Ryan Haney
Theses and Dissertations
New Testament text critics are fueled by a search for origins. But in the absence of an autograph, questions of origins are complicated at best. The fruit of that search for origins has resulted in the creation of hypothetical, eclectic texts—texts which have left us translating and interpreting the Bible in a form that no community in human history has before. Far from being failed projects, however, these eclectic versions aptly represent the problem of the One and the many, a problem not easily solved: When faced with hermeneutic duties, can we effectively speak of New Testament texts without speaking …

Bathsheba's actions in 2 Sam. 11.2-4 identify crucial aspects of her character. Past commentators interpret these words in connection with menstrual purification, stressing the certain paternity of David's adulterine child. This article demonstrates that the participles rōheset and mitqaddesšet and the noun mittum'ātāh do not denote menstrual cleansing. Bathsheba's washing is an innocent bath. She is the only individual human to self-sanctify, placing her in the company of the Israelite deity. The syntax of the verse necessitates that her action of self-sanctifying occurs simultaneously as David lies with her. The three focal terms highlight the important legitimacy of Bathsheba before …
Later Christian Hebraists, Stephen G. Burnett
Later Christian Hebraists, Stephen G. Burnett
Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications
Christian Hebrew scholarship as an academic discipline was born during the sixteenth century. The founding of chairs of Hebrew language at European universities, the emergence of Hebrew presses to supply the needs of Christian customers, the willingness of some Jewish experts to instruct Christian pupils, and above all the humanist motivation for a return to the sources of the Christian faith together made Hebrew education possible for greater numbers of Christian scholars than ever before. The majority of these scholars had only a smattering of Hebrew, and those such as Conrad Pellican, and Paul Fagius who could read and understand …

Projecting The Passion: The Invention Of The 'Judeo-Christian Tradition' In The Roman/Biblical Genre Of Postwar American Film, Don Michael Burrows
Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal
This paper traces the changes in the American view of the relationship between Jews and Christians from the First World War to the present as reflected in motion pictures from the earliest of the biblical epics to Mel Gibson's The Passion of Christ. It demonstrates that the "Judea-Christian tradition " as it has developed since the Second World War is a political theme that functioned first as anti-fascist propaganda and then as anticommunist propaganda that portrayed Jews and Christians as good and free in contrast to Nazis and communists; and it shows what an effective medium the movies were in …

Was The Chronicler A Spin Doctor?: David In The Books Of Chronicles, Mark A. Throntveit

Yes, the Chronicler was a spin doctor—but a necessary one. He used the David story to address the needs of his postexilic community who questioned the value of God’s old promises to David in this new time of Persian domination, without a king, worshiping in a temple that was the mere shadow of Solomon’s glorious edifice.

Not According To Rule: Women, The Dead Sea Scrolls And Qumran, Sidnie White Crawford
Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications
Until very recently, the juxtaposition of the words “women,” “Dead Sea Scrolls” and “Qumran” in the same title would have seemed like an oxymoron. From the beginning of Dead Sea Scrolls research, the people who lived at Qumran and stored the manuscripts in the eleven surrounding caves were identified with the ancient Jewish sect of the Essenes. This identification was based on the descriptions of the Essenes provided by the ancient writers Josephus, Philo and Pliny the Elder. Philo and Pliny are unequivocal in their description of the Essenes as an all-male, celibate group. Josephus also focuses his description of …

Christian Hebrew Printing In The Sixteenth Century: Printers, Humanism And The Impact Of The Reformation, Stephen G. Burnett
Christian Hebrew Printing In The Sixteenth Century: Printers, Humanism And The Impact Of The Reformation, Stephen G. Burnett
Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications
Christian printers of Hebrew books have long been recognized as a crucial factor in the spread of Christian Hebraism in early modern Europe. Their works have traditionally been listed together with Jewish books in bibliographies such as Moritz Steinschneider's catalogue of books on Hebrew language instruction, and the Bodleian library's collection Hebrew imprints since both contain Hebrew type, but grouping them together also blurs their distinctive features. Yet the business of Hebrew printing for Christians differed in character from Jewish printing in a variety of ways. In this essay I will analyze the geographic distribution of non-Jewish Hebrew printing firms …

Review Of The Dead Sea Scrolls And The Christian Faith, Ed. James H. Charlesworth And Walter P. Weaver, Sidnie White Crawford
Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications
"Do the Dead Sea Scrolls hinder or undermine Christian faith?" James Charlesworth asks in the preface of this volume. The four essays that follow all answer with a resounding "No!" The annual Faith and Scholarship Colloquy at Florida Southern College serves to bring together leading scholars to address the most challenging topics in contemporary biblical studies in a way that speaks to a Christian lay audience. This volume, the fifth in a series, admirably meets that goal.

The popularity of the Dead Sea Scrolls and the controversy surrounding their publication have led to the appearance of a spate of books on the Qumran scrolls in recent years. With so many books on the shelves, it is difficult for the reader to differentiate the good from the bad, the wheat from the chaff. Among the books recently published concerning the scrolls, John Collins's book The Scepter and the Star represents a nugget of pure gold.
