Introduction To The Dead Sea Scrolls At Qumran And The Concept Of A Library, Sidnie White Crawford, Cecilia Wassen
Introduction To The Dead Sea Scrolls At Qumran And The Concept Of A Library, Sidnie White Crawford, Cecilia Wassen
Sidnie White Crawford Publications
In the early years following the discovery the manuscripts in the eleven caves in the vicinity of Khirbet Qumran many scholars casually used the term “library” when referring to the Qumran Scrolls. F.M. Cross, for example, entitled his 1958 survey The Ancient Library of Qumran and Modern Biblical Studies, while J.T. Milik named chapter two of his Ten Years of Discovery in the Wilderness of Judaea “The Qumrân Library.”1 More recently authors have shied away from the word “library,” preferring the more neutral terms “corpus,” “collection,” or simply “scrolls.”2 However, the question of whether or not the corpus of …

Embodying God's Final Word: Understanding The Dynamics Of Prophecy In The The Ancient Near East And Early Monotheistic Tradition, Naila Z. Razzaq
Embodying God's Final Word: Understanding The Dynamics Of Prophecy In The The Ancient Near East And Early Monotheistic Tradition, Naila Z. Razzaq
University Scholar Projects
This thesis studies the various forms of oral and literary prophecy in the Ancient the Ancient Near East and Second Temple Judaism. After an introductory background section on the dynamics of prophecy in Ancient Assyria and Mesopotamia, I problematize the nineteenth century concept of the “cessation of prophecy” after Malachi, the last prophet in the Tanakh.
Too often prophecy is seen as a punctiliar process with a determined beginning and end. I complicate this simplified view by discussing the following questions while analyzing several key primary sources from the Second Temple period: In what forms does prophecy continue even after …
Orphic Powers In J.R.R. Tolkien's Legend Of Beren And Lúthien, Jane Beal Phd
Orphic Powers In J.R.R. Tolkien's Legend Of Beren And Lúthien, Jane Beal Phd
Journal of Tolkien Research
In “Orphic Powers in Tolkien’s Legend of Beren and Lúthien,” I consider three interrelated strands that influenced the development of Tolkien’s most precious story: Tolkien’s own life experience, sources from classical mythology and medieval literature, and the hope inherent to the Christian faith, especially for resurrection and eternal life, as symbolized in the Parable of the Pearl of Great Price. This study suggests that Tolkien’s relationship to his wife, Edith, inspires the legend and renders it a psychological allegory. Three Ovidian tales from classical mythology that were later re-told in medieval literature also influence it: the rape of Philomela, the …
Citation Methodologies In Eusebius’ Historia Ecclesiastica And Other Ancient Historiography, Justin Otto Barber
Citation Methodologies In Eusebius’ Historia Ecclesiastica And Other Ancient Historiography, Justin Otto Barber
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines ancient historiographic citation methodologies in light of Mikhail Bakhtin’s dichotomy between polyphony and monologization. In particular, this dissertation argues that Eusebius of Caesarea’s Historia ecclesiastica (HE) abandons the monologic citation methodology typical of previous Greek and Hellenistic historiography and introduces a polyphonic citation methodology that influences subsequent late-ancient Christian historiography to varying degrees. Whereas Pre-Eusebian Greek and Hellenistic historiographers typically use citations to support the single authorial consciousness of the historiographer, Eusebius uses citations to counterbalance his own shortcomings as a witness to past events. Eusebius allows his citations to retain their own voice, even when they …
Classical Philology Gone Wild! The Use Of Classical Texts In The Film All Quiet On The Western Front, Tysen Dauer
Classical Philology Gone Wild! The Use Of Classical Texts In The Film All Quiet On The Western Front, Tysen Dauer
Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato
Studying the texts of the Greco-Roman era has long been a tradition in the West. Works such as The Odyssey, The Iliad, and The Republic were understood to be liberating texts which enabled students to think more critically and as a result live more wisely. Many of the leading scholars in this field of “Classical Texts” (also known as Classical Philology) hailed from 19th century Germany. The 1930 German film All Quiet on the Western Front presented viewers with a classroom scene set at the start of the First World War where selected classical texts were written on the chalkboard, …
Wielding Eden: Early Modern Voices And The Appropriation Of Paradise, Adrienne Redding
Wielding Eden: Early Modern Voices And The Appropriation Of Paradise, Adrienne Redding
Dissertations
This research considers images of gardens and the unavoidable connections such images have to the Garden of Eden. It investigates images of gardens in early modern England, as seen in three different categories of textual artifact: popular prose publications, dramatic texts, and the resurrected poetic epic. It investigates the construction of gender, observing how Edenic iconography functions both to support and to undermine the dominant ideology’s work to naturalize and universalize gender attributes and societal roles. This iconography, dependent upon a variety of interpretations of the first three books of Genesis, has been referenced (and continues to be referenced) by …
"To Kick Against The Pricks:" An Examination Of The Oresteia And The Acts Of The Apostles, D. Luke Gonzalez
"To Kick Against The Pricks:" An Examination Of The Oresteia And The Acts Of The Apostles, D. Luke Gonzalez
Capstone Research Projects
The major themes found in the Oresteia and the books of Luke and Acts of the Apostles are compared. By focusing on the similarities found in the themes of Justice, Religion, and New versus Old, the reader may determine if the phrase in question is being used as a literary allusion in the book of Acts of the Apostles to the Oresteia trilogy. The author believes this to be the case and believes that to arrive at a full understanding of the literary meaning of the phrase in question, an understanding of the major themes of the Oresteia is necessary.
Know Yourself And You Will Be Known: The Gospel Of Thomas And Middle Platonism, Seth A. Clark
Know Yourself And You Will Be Known: The Gospel Of Thomas And Middle Platonism, Seth A. Clark
CGU Theses & Dissertations
The Gospel of Thomas is a collection of 114 sayings attributed to Jesus and is primarily composed of rhetorical statements that were used to preserve the teachings of itinerant Greek philosophers. These collections were used to persuade individuals to join the philosophical schools represented, much like the early followers of the Jesus movement would use his teachings to convince others to join them as well. However, the theological background for the text is still debated because it contains esoteric and enigmatic references not fully understood by most scholars. This work argues that the theological and philosophical background for the Gospel …
A Foreign Text In A Foreign Land, Dylan A. Vernon
A Foreign Text In A Foreign Land, Dylan A. Vernon
Honors Projects
The Bible has passed through different languages and cultures, and in the process the words of the text lose their original meaning and gain new meanings. This process influences the way that commentators interpret the biblical text. This study looks at the Hebrew verb פתה that appears in Hosea 2:16, the Greek verb πλανω that translates פתה in Hosea 2:16, and the Latin verb lacto that translates פתה in Hosea 2:16. This study then looks at the interpretations of Hosea 2:16 by three commentators, Rabbi Shlomo ben Issac (Rashi), Theodore of Mopsuestia, and Nicholas of Lyra. Rashi read the Hebrew …
Frank Moore Cross’S Contribution To The Study Of The Dead Sea Scrolls, Sidnie White Crawford
Frank Moore Cross’S Contribution To The Study Of The Dead Sea Scrolls, Sidnie White Crawford
Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications
This paper examines the impact of Frank Moore Cross on the study of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Since Cross was a member of the original editorial team responsible for publishing the Cave 4 materials, his influence on the field was vast. The article is limited to those areas of Scrolls study not covered in other articles; the reader is referred especially to the articles on palaeography and textual criticism for further discussion of Cross’s work on the Scrolls.
A Symposium On The Legacy Of Frank Moore Cross: Introduction, Walter E. Aufrecht, Sidnie White Crawford
A Symposium On The Legacy Of Frank Moore Cross: Introduction, Walter E. Aufrecht, Sidnie White Crawford
Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications
The papers following these remarks were presented in November 2013 at a symposium jointly sponsored by the Society of Biblical Literature and the American Schools of Oriental Research. Frank Cross was a president of both of these organizations, and so it seemed desirable to conduct a retrospective of his scholarly work under their aegis. Cross’s life and career was superbly highlighted in this journal by Peter Machinist (2013), and they need no further rehearsal here. Rather, our goal is to begin the evaluation of his work and its influence on the scholarly world.
Review Of The Dead Sea Scrolls In Context: Integrating The Dead Sea Scrolls In The Study Of Ancient Texts, Languages, And Cultures, Edited By Armin Lange, Emanuel Tov, And Matthias Weigold, In Association With Bennie H. Reynolds Iii., Sidnie White Crawford
Sidnie White Crawford Publications
These two massive volumes comprise the proceedings of a conference of the same name held at the University of Vienna in February 2008. The purpose of the conference, and the proceedings volumes, in the words of the editors, is “to integrate the Dead Sea Scrolls fully into the various disciplines that benefit from the discovery of these very important texts” (vol. 1, p. x). As a result, the papers contained in these volumes are wideranging, written by specialists in the Dead Sea Scrolls (DSS) as well as in other disciplines. The volumes will thus appeal to scholars in a variety …
To The Jew First: A Socio-Historical And Biblical-Theological Analysis Of The Pauline Teaching Of `Election' In Light Of Second Temple Jewish Patterns Of Thought, Anthony Thornhill
To The Jew First: A Socio-Historical And Biblical-Theological Analysis Of The Pauline Teaching Of `Election' In Light Of Second Temple Jewish Patterns Of Thought, Anthony Thornhill
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Paul's "doctrine" of election has remained a controversial and enigmatic topic for centuries. Few studies, however, have approached Paul's doctrine through the context of Second Temple Judaism. This study examines Paul's view of election through the lens of Second Temple Jewish texts written prior to 70 CE. In doing so, it is argued that the best framework through which to view Paul's discussion of election is through a primarily corporate model of election. While such a model is rooted in Judaism, Paul departs from his Jewish contemporaries in arguing that the locus of election is in God's Messiah, Jesus.
