Reports

Summary: Groundwater development frequently provides a means whereby tremendous new economic opportunities are opened up. If supplies are overdrawn (mined) the ensuing regional economy may be able to affort replacements from more costly sources. In the United States the Salt River Valley of Arizona and the valleys of California provide examples. Two cases are treated in this paper, Israel and West Pakistan. In Israel, besides furnishing more than half of the basic source of water suppply, groundwater development provides opportunity for both quantity and quality management, which makes possible use of surface supplies and reclaimed sewage as firm rather than …

Using Remote Infrared Sensors To Detect Changes In Moisture Conditions On Natural Watersheds, Ralph D. Briscoe, Frank W. Haws Jan 1967

Using Remote Infrared Sensors To Detect Changes In Moisture Conditions On Natural Watersheds, Ralph D. Briscoe, Frank W. Haws

Reports

Foreword: This report summarizes the results of laboratory measurements of the infrared reflectance of selected living plants typical of the natural watersheds in northern Utah. Data indicate that the IR reflectance decreases as the moisture content of the soil decreases and the moisture tension in the soil increases. Additional data will be collected in the field to confirm the results and to further tests the feasibility of using IR reflectance of vegetation as an indicator of soil moisture conditions on the watershed. Mr. Briscoe, Research Physicist, has been responsible for the gathering of laboratory data and has written the manuscript …

Matrix Computer Analysis Of Curvilinear Grid Systems, David Leon Fenton Jan 1967

Matrix Computer Analysis Of Curvilinear Grid Systems, David Leon Fenton

Doctoral Dissertations

"A general equilibrium-stiffness method of matrix structural analysis was adapted and applied to the solution of the member end forces and moments of each of the members in a curvilinear structural grid system. A structural system of this nature is commonly used as the supporting framework for a "steel-framed dome", in addition to being a basic structural component in many aerospace applications. An integral part of the development of the analysis was the development of a computer program to perform the many complex operations required to obtain the solution. The engineer, by supplying the appropriate structural data and load data …

Mineralized Springs In Utah And Their Effect On Manageable Water Supplies, James H. Milligan, Ray E. Marsell, Jay M. Bagley

Reports

Need and Importance of Study

Water demands in Utah are continuously increasing. It is essential that these demands be me to insure the continued enhancement of the social and economic well-being of all sectors of our society. Since water needs must be met from a relatively fixed water supply it is imperative that supplies be managed for complete utilization in such a way that all legitimate requirement scan be satisfied.

As our available water supplies are used more completely by making a given supply satisfy more than one use, water quality problems become more pronounced. The multiplicity of uses to …

A Preliminary Experimental Study Of The Turbulence Decay In The Wake Of A Hemisphere In Free-Surface Flow, Jiin-Jen Lee May 1966

A Preliminary Experimental Study Of The Turbulence Decay In The Wake Of A Hemisphere In Free-Surface Flow, Jiin-Jen Lee

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Flows observed in open channels are usually turbulent. The word "turbulent" describes a motion in which an irregular velocity fluctuation (mixing or eddying motion) is superimposed on the main stream motion. The essential characteristic of turbulent flow is that the turbulent fluctuations are random in nature.

If Reynold's rule of averaging is used, the Navier-Stokes equations for laminar flow may be transformed into the Reynold's equations, which hold true for turbulent mean motion. The solution of Reynold's equations will properly describe turbulent flow. Unfortunately, the number of unknowns exceeds the number of equations; therefore the use of mathematical method to …

Stage-Fall-Discharge Relations For Flood Flows Over Highway Embankments, Gaylord V. Skogerboe, M. Leon Hyatt, Lloyd H. Austin Mar 1966

Stage-Fall-Discharge Relations For Flood Flows Over Highway Embankments, Gaylord V. Skogerboe, M. Leon Hyatt, Lloyd H. Austin

Reports

At Utah State University, considerable effort has been devoted to the analysis of submerged flow at open channel constrictions. A method of analyzing submerged flow was first developed for a trapezoidal flume by Hyatt (1965). Later studies verified the method of analysis for a rectangular flume (Skogerboe, Walker, and Robinson, 1965) and Parshall flumes (Skogerboe, Hyatt, England, and Johnson, 1965). Because of the previous findings, it was felt this method of analyzing submerged flow could be applied to highway embankments.

A highway embankment is a form of broad-crested weir when overtopped by flood waters. Being a weir, the flood discharge …

Modifications To Gate-Flume Structures On The Weber Davis Canal, Gaylord V. Skogerboe, M. Leon Hyatt

Reports

The turnout structures under study divert flows from the Weber-Davis Canal near Clearfield, Utah. A portion of the canal in this area was realigned as a result of the construction of the Interstate Highway System. The twin turnout structures, used to divert water to the West Branch Irrigation Company and West Layton Irrigation Company, were constructed in conjunction with the realignment of the concrete -lined canal.

A three-dimensional drawing of the twin turnout structures is shown in Fig. 1. Water is diverted from the canal by passing under the discharge diverted through each of the structures is approximately 35 cfs …

Piggery Septic System, N E. Macintyre Jan 1966

Piggery Septic System, N E. Macintyre

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

ONE of the problems of intensive houses for pigs is the disposal of the dung and urine.

If proper arrangements are not made to remove this, it soon accumulates in an offensive pile at one end of the piggery, making an excellent breeding ground for flies.

A Numerical Solution For Beam-Columns On Non-Linear Foundations, Wendelin H. Mueller Iii Jan 1966

A Numerical Solution For Beam-Columns On Non-Linear Foundations, Wendelin H. Mueller Iii

Masters Theses

"A program for Matlock's recursive method, a numerical method which will analyze beams and columns with linearly varying spring supports, was modified to enable the solution of such members supported by non-linear springs. This modification was accomplished by an iterative technique. The final result of this paper is a computer program which can be used to solve beams or columns with non-linear spring supports, giving as output the deflection, slope, moment, shear, net load and curvature of the structure at uniformly spaced locations"--Abstract, page ii.

Bending Of Isosceles Right Triangular Plates, Ping-Tung Huang Jan 1966

Bending Of Isosceles Right Triangular Plates, Ping-Tung Huang

Masters Theses

"In this thesis the series expansion method is used to obtain the moments and deflections of an isosceles right triangular plate bent by arbitrary transverse loads. The method is based on using an antisymmetric load on a square plate. Two boundary conditions are solved and the numerical results obtained for these cases are tabulated"--Abstract, page ii.

Modification Of The Hydraulic Jump By Submerged Jets, Edward Leon Tharp Jan 1966

Modification Of The Hydraulic Jump By Submerged Jets, Edward Leon Tharp

Masters Theses

"Tests were performed in order to determine the effect of submerged jets injecting water into the base of the hydraulic jump. The jump was studied in terms of the following properties: specific energy of the flow leaving the hydraulic jump, length of the hydraulic jump, tailwater depth, and wave formation properties. These properties for the hydraulic jump with submerged jets were compared to the natural hydraulic jump.

Results of the tests indicate that: submerged jets at any angle tested tend to decrease the specific energy of the water leaving the jump and are more effective than the impulse-momentum principle indicates, …

Analysis Charts For Single And Multi-Span Gabled Frames, John (Chung-Su) Ma Jan 1966

Analysis Charts For Single And Multi-Span Gabled Frames, John (Chung-Su) Ma

Masters Theses

"A method for analyzing single and multi-span gabled frames using analysis charts is presented. This method requires considerably fewer computations than methods previously used (such as the moment distribution and slope-deflection methods). Analysis charts are presented for single gabled frames having fixed or pinned ends at ground level, and charts are also presented which can be used to efficiently analyze multi-gabled frames.

The data for the analysis charts were obtained using matrix techniques in conjunction with the digital computer. These techniques are described"--Abstract, page ii.

Plastic Design Of Steel Frames For Minimum Weight, I-Chen Hung Jan 1966

Plastic Design Of Steel Frames For Minimum Weight, I-Chen Hung

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this study was to develop a method for weight minimization of the plastically designed frame, braced normal to its plane of action, and composed of prismatic steel members. The method accounts for the non-linear relationship between weight and moment capacity for both beams and columns. Reduction in the pure-bending fully-plastic moment in the presence of axial loading and both beam-column instability and overall frame instability due to sidesway are taken into account. Provision is made for minimization of frames employing standard sections as well as for frames whose built-up members may be chosen from a continuous spectrum. …

The Development Of A Modified Soil Shear Vane, Vernelle Truman Smith Jan 1966

The Development Of A Modified Soil Shear Vane, Vernelle Truman Smith

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation was to determine how the soil shear graph could be modified to measure more accurately values of shear strength of fine-grained, cohesive soils. Several modifications were tried, however, the one that gave the most satisfactory results consisted of a vane and base plate mechanism.

A red clay of high plasticity obtained from a local cave was tested in both the natural or undisturbed state and in the remolded state. The only variable was the moisture content. Compaction effort was the same for all remolded specimens. Tests were conducted on undisturbed samples taken with thin walled …

The Effect Of Structure On The Consolidation Characteristics Of A Clay Soil, Dale E. Sukow Jan 1966

The Effect Of Structure On The Consolidation Characteristics Of A Clay Soil, Dale E. Sukow

Masters Theses

"This paper reports the results of an investigation conducted to establish the effect of structure on the consolidation characteristics of a clay soil. Soil structure was caused to form in the soil by the addition of electrolytes to flocculate and disperse the clay fraction of the soil.

Consolidation tests were performed on specimens of the treated soil prepared at moisture contents well above the liquid limit of the soil. The consolidation data from these tests are evaluated and comparisons are made to relate the influence of structure to the consolidation characteristics of the treated soil.

The influence of structure on …

Fluid Flow In Pipes Of Rectangular Cross Sections, Bruce Harold Bradford Jan 1966

Fluid Flow In Pipes Of Rectangular Cross Sections, Bruce Harold Bradford

Masters Theses

"Head loss due to fluid friction was measured in smooth conduits of rectangular cross section. The data covers the laminar and turbulent range. Results were compared with previous theoretical and empirical data.

The customary practice of calculating head loss in non-circular conduits by use of the friction factor obtained on an “equivalent” circular pipe was discussed. It was found that this practice is successful in square cross sections undergoing turbulent flow. In laminar flow, however, this method is not accurate"--Abstract, page ii.

A Procedure For Analysis Of Three-Segment Symmetrical Balcony Beams, Ronald A. Hansen Jan 1966

A Procedure For Analysis Of Three-Segment Symmetrical Balcony Beams, Ronald A. Hansen

Masters Theses

"A procedure for analysis of three-segment symmetrical balcony beams unsymmetrically loaded was derived whereby the normally complicated energy solution is eliminated. A moment distribution technique is used in the solution of the first and second phases of the problem. Tables are given to aid in determining the proper distribution factors. Due to the complexity of the third phase, a table of solutions is given for varying values of length, geometry, etc.. An example problem is also given demonstrating the use of interpolation within the tables"--Abstract, page ii.
