Co-Metabolism Of Pentachlorophenol With Glucose Using Two-Stage Anaerobic Activated Carbon Fluidized Beds, Zen Wang Dec 1988

Co-Metabolism Of Pentachlorophenol With Glucose Using Two-Stage Anaerobic Activated Carbon Fluidized Beds, Zen Wang

Theses

Abstract - Detoxification of pentachlorophenol by using a two-stage anaerobic biological activated carbon fluidized bed has been investigated. Glucose was introduced as a cosubstrate to determine the relationship between the glucose/PCP ratio and the extent of PCP detoxification in such a system. This system has been proved to be effective in the removal of both PCP and COD. Ratio of glucose to PCP predominates the performance of the system throughout the whole course of this experiment. At a glucose/PCP ratio of 0.33, the system has a highest reduction of both PCP and COD. Addition of glucose to the highly PCP …

Decontamination Of Contaminated Clay Soils By Thermal Treatment, Chandrakanthi Weerasinghe Dec 1988

Decontamination Of Contaminated Clay Soils By Thermal Treatment, Chandrakanthi Weerasinghe

Theses

An experimental investigation on the desorption of contaminated clay soils by thermal treatment was performed. This study was carried out on two clay soils (kaolinite and bentonite) sorbed with three liquid organic compounds (phenol, chlorophenol, and chlorobenzene). The study consists of two different phases, the adsorption and desorption. The results on batch equilibrium adsorption were correlated with different isotherm models of which the Freundlich isotherm model was found to be best fit in predicting adsorption capacities of kaolinite, and that for bentonite was found to be the linear isotherm model.

A thermal desorption study followed the equilibrium adsorption study. A …

Development Of A Rock Model Testing Capability At The New Jersey Institute Of Technology And Testing Of Plane Stress Models Possessing A Central Circular Opening With A Nearby Horizontal Discontinuity, David R. Good

Theses

This thesis had three main objectives. They were to develop a rock model testing capability at N.J.I.T. by (1) developing and building a load testing frame for rock models, including all necessary appurtenances and load measuring devices, (2) developing a rock modelling material and quantifying its properties, and (3) applying the capabilities described in items 1 and 2.

A high capacity load test frame was constructed from structural steel members. Heavy screw rams were utilized to apply load and specially constructed proving rings were employed to accurately measure load. Additionally, load platens and other support equipment were constructed.

The model …

Comparison Of Rigid Pavement Thickness Design Systems, Herbert F. Southgate Aug 1988

Comparison Of Rigid Pavement Thickness Design Systems, Herbert F. Southgate

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Rigid pavement thickness design systems investigated during this study were the 1986 AASHTO, American Concrete Pavement Association (ACPA), Portland Cement Association (PCA), and Kentucky methods. The ACPA system is a computer program based upon the 1966 AASHTO design equation. It was difficult to evaluate and compare the Kentucky method to the PCA system because the input and analysis procedures differ greatly.

The Kentucky method is based upon the fatigue relationship involving the value of work at the bottom of the concrete pavement caused by the applied load and repetitions of an 18-kip single axleload. The AASHTO method was derived from …

Hazardous Waste Disposal Site Hydrogeologic Characterization, S. M. Testa Jun 1988

Hazardous Waste Disposal Site Hydrogeologic Characterization, S. M. Testa

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

A major hazardous waste disposal facility near Arlington, Oregon serving the Pacific Northwest, Canada, and Alaska maintains numerous favorable environmental characteristics for siting of a hazardous waste disposal facility. The risk of contamination as a result of potential leakage from a waste management unit via primary pathways to surface water, groundwater or by direct contact and/or ingestion is thus reasonably low. However, these same characteristics which make the site most suitable for hazardous waste disposal often conflict with: 1) the demonstration of the groundwater monitoring system's ability to adequately perform immediate leak detection monitoring as mandated under the Resource Conservation …

Investigation Of Settlements Of A Trunk Road Embankment In Hong Kong, P. L. R. Pang, Y. C. Chan Jun 1988

Investigation Of Settlements Of A Trunk Road Embankment In Hong Kong, P. L. R. Pang, Y. C. Chan

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

A 25 m high fill embankment was constructed as part of a Trunk Road scheme in Hong Kong. In June 1985, large settlements of the order of 250 mm were observed in the embankment. This was followed by a local slippage of surface material from the downstream slope face. To meet the schedule for opening the trunk road in late September, a number of emergency measures costing about HK$1 M (US$0.13 M) were implemented to stabilize the embankment. An investigation was subsequently carried out to assess the cause of the movement and the long term stability of the embankment. This …

Probabilistic Analysis Of Earthquake-Induced Pool Release, T. F. Wolff, G. L. Hempen, M. M. Dirnberger, B. H. Moore Jun 1988

Probabilistic Analysis Of Earthquake-Induced Pool Release, T. F. Wolff, G. L. Hempen, M. M. Dirnberger, B. H. Moore

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Wappapello Dam was constructed in 1938 near the New Madrid seismic region. Loose sands in the dam foundation led to concern for liquefaction and embankment sliding if a large earthquake were to occur. However it was also recognized that the operation of the dam for flood control results in relatively low reservoir levels the majority of the time, substantially reducing the risk of earthquake-induced flooding. Because of these factors, a probabilistic analysis was performed to assess the likelihood of the combination of required events leading to an earthquake-induced pool release. Results of such analyses provide better information on which to …

Collapsing Peak Up Of A Large Highway Steel Pipe-Arch, Minh Phong Luong Jun 1988

Collapsing Peak Up Of A Large Highway Steel Pipe-Arch, Minh Phong Luong

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

This case history reports the collapse of a large highway steel pipe-arch (8.12 m rise - 10.95 m span), occurring just when backfilling reached the top of the arch. No fill was placed on top as backfilling proceeded; the arch raised, thereby flattening side radius. It shows that stability in a soil-structure interaction system requires not only adequate design of the structure barrel, it also presumes a well engineered backfill. Performance of the flexible steel pipe-arch in retaining its shape and structural integrity depends greatly on placement and compaction of the envelope of earth surrounding the structure and distributing its …

Correlation Between The Actual And Predicted Settlements Of Structures At Nsukka, Nigeria, H. O. Chukweze

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The paper compares the measured and calculated settlements of two buildings and one concrete water tank founded on the red-weathered soils of Nsukka, Nigeria. Prior to actual construction of the structures the three sites were investigated, soil samples were collected and tested in the laboratory and the data collected were used to predict the total and differential settlements of the structures. Then permanent concrete slabs were established as bases at each of the three sites for observing other points. The theodolite was used at each of the sites to monitor the movements of each of the structures, starting from the …

Performance Of Some Tunnels In Squeezing Rocks Of Himalayas, T. Ramamurthy, V. M. Sharma Jun 1988

Performance Of Some Tunnels In Squeezing Rocks Of Himalayas, T. Ramamurthy, V. M. Sharma

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Data regarding the performance of three tunnelling projects in the Himalayan region has been collected. It is seen that rock loads or deformations calculated on the basis of Barton, Bieniawski or RMR approach do not match the field data. A mathematical model has been developed incorporating modifications in the approach of Brown et.al of rock-support interaction, using elastic-strain softening-plastic ground characteristics. A non-linear relationship between radial and tangential strains around the tunnel has been considered and the method of calculation of stresses and deformations altered to incorporate exact integration of the governing differential equation for a thin cylindrical annulus replacing …

Case Studies Through Material Modelling And Computation, C. S. Desai Jun 1988

Case Studies Through Material Modelling And Computation, C. S. Desai

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

This paper describes a number of case studies by using numerical procedures conducted by the author and his co-workers over a number of years. The case studies involve a wide range of static and dynamic stress-deformation, seepage and stability, and consolidation problems. The numerical procedures use simple linear and nonlinear elastic models, to advanced but simplified hierarchical plasticity based models for geologic materials and interfaces/joints. The evolution from the use of simple to advanced models is guided by the realization that it is essential to employ models that are capable of handling the complexities in geotechnical systems. In addition to …

Case Histories Of Foundations With Stone Columns, K. R. Dayte, M. R. Madhav Jun 1988

Case Histories Of Foundations With Stone Columns, K. R. Dayte, M. R. Madhav

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The paper presents case histories of performance of foundations where stone columns were provided, along with relevant data regarding structural systems, soil conditions, construction methods and field control criteria. A wide range of applications are included comprising stone columns for area treatment and stone column in small and large groups for isolated footings, pipe pedestals and bridge abutments. In some of the cases design load exceeded the estimated yield load over a part of the stone column length yet collapse did not occur because the soil stress around the stone column increased as more load was passed on to the …

Progress In The Use Of Natm For The São Paulo Subway, T. B. Celestino, O. A. Ferrari, C. T. Mitsuse, L. C. Domingues

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The first time that the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) was used for underground works in the Sao Paulo Subway was in 1981. Since that time, significant progress has been achieved in successfully optimizing the support and lowering the construction costs. This paper will describe the latest experience of two single-track parallel tunnels excavated in 1986 through tertiary stiff clay. All the experience accumulated in previous jobs led to design improvements, such as (1) no steel ribs for support along 72% of the tunnels length (2) no temporary invert, and (3) no spiles, forepoles, soil grouting or any other type …

The analytical procedure used is presented and the study concludes with a comparative study of the results obtained from the calculation programme used and monitoring system's measurements.

Dynamic Response Of An Actual Hammer Foundation, A. S. Arya, S. Saran, S. Bandyopadhyay Jun 1988

Dynamic Response Of An Actual Hammer Foundation, A. S. Arya, S. Saran, S. Bandyopadhyay

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

During the operation of Hammers and other shock producing machines, strong dynamic effects are generated which depend on the interaction between the different elements of the system. A simple two-degree of freedom system comprising of mass and spring, may offer reasonable result. Better result may be obtained by Wave Equation approach. This paper compares these two numerical schemes with the observed behavior of one Belt-drop stamping hammer.

Seismic Response Analysis Of Forebay Structure For Cw Pump House Of A Nuclear Power Project, Malay Basu Ray, Dhiman Kr. Ghosh Jun 1988

Seismic Response Analysis Of Forebay Structure For Cw Pump House Of A Nuclear Power Project, Malay Basu Ray, Dhiman Kr. Ghosh

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The paper reviews the current state-of-the-art on the seismic response analysis of complex RCC structure like forebay which is usually connected with CW Pump House frame at its rear end for fulfilling circulating water requirement in power plant - nuclear or thermal. The need to include in such analysis and design effects of 3-Dimensional mathematical model and soil-structure interaction for studying overall behaviour of the structure are highlighted. The paper also discusses the usefulness, if any, of such rigorous analysis and identifies some problem areas in finalising realistic design data and adopting suitable models to represent the structural system.

Seismosedimentation And Lives Of Reservoirs, Arun Bapat Jun 1988

Seismosedimentation And Lives Of Reservoirs, Arun Bapat

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

When moderate to major earthquakes, usually of magnitude more than or equal to 6. 0 on Richter Scale, occur in catchment area of river, additional amount of geological materials is generated, which is called as Seismosediments and the process is known as Seismosedimentation. River flow mechanism carries it down to reservoir. This amount of seismosediment is quantified by a mathematical relation. A specific case of seismosedimentation with reference to sediments in Bhakra reservoir has been discussed. It is observed that seismosedimentation could reduce the economic life of reservoir and adversely affects the utility of reservoir. Re-examination of lives of large …

Multiyear Drought Simulation With Periodic-Stochastic Hydrologic Processes, Lankeswara Hemal Wijayaratne May 1988

Multiyear Drought Simulation With Periodic-Stochastic Hydrologic Processes, Lankeswara Hemal Wijayaratne

Dissertations

Previous studies on multiyear droughts are often limited to the analysis of historic annual flow series. A major problem in these studies is the unavailability of long historic flow records, on which to perform the analysis. To overcome this difficulty, the present study has used synthetically generated mean annual flow series to suppliment the historic flows. For the purpose of generating flows, a general methodology was developed to propose a mathematical model based on the harmonic and stochastic analyses of the historic flow series. The main objective was to derive a large population of multiyear drought events from the generated …

Sorption And Desorption Of Organic Compounds By Flyash, Kashinath Banerjee May 1988

Sorption And Desorption Of Organic Compounds By Flyash, Kashinath Banerjee

Dissertations

A sorbent treatment process has been developed which uses flyash as sorbent in the treatment of highly toxic and hazardous chemicals; these include: Alcohols, Aldehydes, Ketones and Aromatics. Batch, as well as dynamic, studies were performed, in different phases, during the investigation. Single and multiple solute systems were examined separately. The samples were analyzed using a Flame Ionization Detector Gas Chromatograph.

The result of this study demonstrates that isolation/ immobilization of the organic pollutants is technologically feasible by adsorbing the contaminants onto flyash. The residual carbon content of the flyash plays a very significant role during the treatment process. The …

Sorptive And Geotechnical Characteristics Of Kaolinite, Chi-Yuan Shih May 1988

Sorptive And Geotechnical Characteristics Of Kaolinite, Chi-Yuan Shih

Theses

The sorption/desorption behavior of phenol and chlorobenzene as well as their influence on geotechnical characteristics of kaolinite were studied. The results reveal that the sorption process follows closely with the Freundlich adsorption isotherm whereas the sorption/desorption ratio depends upon the characteristics of organic compounds.

A series of geotechnical properties tests was also undertaken after achieving equilibrium at different concentrations of organic compounds. It was found that the parameters such as liquid limit, plastic limit, optimum moisture content, and dry density increase with an increasing-concentration of organic compounds.

The relationship between the geotechnical, properties and sorption behavior of soils provides the …
