Seeing Or Coming To The Child Of The Living One? More On 'Gospel Of Thomas' Saying-37 (An Assessment On Scribal Tendencies In Coptic Manuscripts From The Early Christian Communities), Marvin Meyer
Religious Studies Faculty Articles and Research
"In a note published in Harvard Theological Review in 1995, Gregory J. Riley suggests a new reading for a damaged portion of Gospel of Thomas 37...Riley questions the translation of the portion of the saying in Nag Hammadi Codex II, p. 39, at the end of line 34 (the last line), where the papyrus is damaged, and proposes that the reading "the[n yo]u [w]ill come" is preferable to "then [you] will see." The proposed reading, if adopted, would significantly change the traditional interpretation of this saying, which has been understood to refer to enlightenment that comes from ritual participation in …

Early Latin Commentaries On The Apocalypse, Francis X. Gumerlock
Early Latin Commentaries On The Apocalypse, Francis X. Gumerlock
TEAMS Commentary Series
Many commentaries on the Apocalypse were produced in the early Middle Ages. This book provides translations of two Apocalypse commentaries from the seventh and eighth centuries. On the Mysteries of the Apocalypse of John is part of a large one-volume "Reference Bible" composed about 750. Written probably by an Irish teacher residing in northern France, it answers difficulties arising from the biblical text. The Handbook on the Apocalypse of the Apostle John, attributed erroneously to Jerome and written before 767, contains brief moral and allegorical interpretations of particular words and phrases of the Apocalypse. The introduction highlights the unique …
Nicholas Of Lyra's Apocalypse Commentary, Philip D.W. Krey
Nicholas Of Lyra's Apocalypse Commentary, Philip D.W. Krey
TEAMS Commentary Series
Surveys of the history of biblical exegesis and, in particular, the history of Apocalypse commentaries rarely fail to allude to Nicholas of Lyra O.F.M. (1270-1349) as the greatest biblical exegete of the fourteenth century. Late medieval and Reformation verses were written about him. Nicholas was born in the town of Lyre, near Evreux in Normandy. Since Evreux was a center of Jewish studies, he was able to cultivate his interest in Hebrew and to become thoroughly acquainted with the Talmud, Midrash, and the works of Rashi (Solomon ben Issac, 1045-1105). Lyra's attraction to Rashi's literal method would have a profound …

Eucharistic Symbolism In The Gospel Of John, David E. Fredrickson
Eucharistic Symbolism In The Gospel Of John, David E. Fredrickson
Faculty Publications
A metaphorical reading of eating Jesus’ flesh in John 6 is insufficient. It keeps the reader from seeing the connection between Jesus’ self-giving and his divinity; it does not reckon with the communication of divinity to communicants; it does not allow for our participation in the life of God through the ascent of the incarnate Word.

Thoughts On A Movement, Gary L. Mcintosh
Journal of the American Society for Church Growth
This article is the Presidential Address given at the annual conference of the American Society for Church Growth held in Houston, Texas in November 1994. Using Dr. Vaughan’s 1993 presidential address as a springboard, Dr. Gary L. McIntosh conducted a year long survey to determine the attitudes toward the Church Growth Movement among pastors, denominational executives, and members of the ASCG. The complete updated results of that survey are printed here for the first time.
The Sitz Im Leben Of The Johannine Bread Of Life Discourse And Its Evolving Context, Paul N. Anderson
The Sitz Im Leben Of The Johannine Bread Of Life Discourse And Its Evolving Context, Paul N. Anderson
Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology
The thesis of this study is that because the Johannine Bread of Life Discourse reflects an exhortative homiletical unit, connecting the ministry of Jesus with ongoing crises affecting the Johannine community of faith, an investigation into the rhetorical thrust of its message will illumine—and be illumined by—one’s understanding of the Johannine situation and its evolving context. More specifically, as the central exhortative thrust of the discourse is “Work not for food that is death-producing, but for the food that is life-producing—eternally, which the Son of Man shall give you” (v. 27), the misunderstanding dialogues between Jesus and four groups of …
Eschatological Paradigm And Moral Theory In Contemporary Christian Ethics: Stephen Charles Mott And Thomas W. Ogletree, Larry Lee Lichtenwalter
Eschatological Paradigm And Moral Theory In Contemporary Christian Ethics: Stephen Charles Mott And Thomas W. Ogletree, Larry Lee Lichtenwalter
Dissertations
Twentieth-century re-interpreted eschatology introduces a paradigm for Christian ethics that engenders significant divergence among Christian ethicists in the way its application influences moral theory. These divergences indicate the need to clarify the issues revolving around its methodological application in order to bring credible structure for applying the eschatological paradigm in Christian ethics.
A set of analytical distinctions and procedural suggestions in this study provide an extensive framework for comparatively observing where ethicists begin, move, and end in terms of using eschatology as paradigm in their moral theory: (1) role and function of paradigms, (2) levels of paradigm operation (macro, meso, …

A Study Guide To Mark's Gospel: Discovering Mark's Message For His Day And Ours, Scott Gambrill Sinclair
Faculty Authored Books and Book Contributions
A section-by-section guide to the study of Mark's Gospel, intended primarily for lay people who want a very brief introduction to the gospel that will highlight its essential message and can be used for individual or group reflection. It coincides with year B lectionary Gospel readings.
Sinclair's work concentrates on discovering what Mark was saying to the Christian readers of his own time. He also provides a new translation of the Gospel which will help readers experience the sometimes all too familiar material in a fresh way.
