A Study Of The Ph Of Sodium Citrate In Relation To Blood Transfusion, Roman Edward Galasinski Jun 1927

A Study Of The Ph Of Sodium Citrate In Relation To Blood Transfusion, Roman Edward Galasinski

Bachelors’ Theses

Blood transfusion, within recent years, has become a subject of paramount therapeutic importance. A few years back the technique of blood transfusion was so difficult that there were only a relatively few who possessed the requisite skill to perform the operation and then not always successfully. But since the year 1907 the evolution and perfection of blood transfusion procedures has been so steady and immense that, as a therapeutic measure, it has come into general use in the treatment of various acute and chronic lesions.

The Effect Of Aldehydes On The Solutions Of Iron Wire In Hydrochloric Acid, Mary Margaret Bannen Jun 1927

The Effect Of Aldehydes On The Solutions Of Iron Wire In Hydrochloric Acid, Mary Margaret Bannen

Bachelors’ Theses

The destruction of iron by corrosion, under the influence of natural agencies, is far more rapid than the decay of wood and other materials of construction. Were it not for iron, the erection of large works of engineering would be impossible. Their very size and consequent cost represent a large sum of human energy. This is, after all, the only true foundation for wealth and it becomes a duty to preserve iron from decay.

Lewis and Benedict based their method of sugar determination upon the reaction which takes place when a glucose solution is heated with a few C.C. of picric acid to which a small amount of alkali has been added.

The Effect Of Various Waxes On The Rate Of Evaporation Of Light Naphtha, Juel Osmund Severson Jan 1927

The Effect Of Various Waxes On The Rate Of Evaporation Of Light Naphtha, Juel Osmund Severson

Bachelors’ Theses

Solids dissolved in a liquid produce a general decrease in the evaporation rate of the solvent. Experiments were performed, using light naphtha as the solvent and Paraffin, Japan, Carnauba, Candelilla, Ozokerite, Montan, and Bees waxes as solutes. These waxes were selected since they are the waxes most commonly used in the manufacture of floor waxes and work of the kind presented in this thesis finds its greatest application in connection with that industry.

The Solubility Of Solid Paraffin In The Lower Molecular Weight Hydrocarbons, Paul Weber Jan 1927

The Solubility Of Solid Paraffin In The Lower Molecular Weight Hydrocarbons, Paul Weber

Masters Theses

"In the process of oil refining, a certain fraction of distillate from the crude oil composes the so-called wax distillate fraction from which is obtained the various lubricating oils. But the presence of the waxes and solid paraffins in these oils is very undesirable as they possess no lubricating qualities. Consequently, they must be removed from this wax distillate before the oil can be marketed"--Introduction, page 1.

The Evaporation Of Pyroxylin Solvents And Non-Solvents And The Effect Of Dissolved Pyroxylin On Various Types Of Evaporation Curves, Herbert Heinrich Jun 1926

The Evaporation Of Pyroxylin Solvents And Non-Solvents And The Effect Of Dissolved Pyroxylin On Various Types Of Evaporation Curves, Herbert Heinrich

Bachelors’ Theses

In 1833 Braconnot described a body which he called Xyloidine. This material was obtained by the action of nitric acid on starch. In 1838 Pelonze produced a similar body by treating paper with nitric acid. Although these experiments were conducted several years before those of Soh8nbein, yet we give Schonbein the honor of priority because of bis extensive studies on the new compound "explosive cotton wool". The material was produced by the combined action of nitric and sulphuric acids on cellulose. A patent was granted to him in the United States December 5, 1846, but little attention was paid to …

A Study Of The Preparation And Properties Of Some Metallic Soaps, Charley George Hagan Jun 1926

A Study Of The Preparation And Properties Of Some Metallic Soaps, Charley George Hagan

Bachelors’ Theses

Soap may be defined as the sodium or potassium salt of the acids that are found in fats. The metallic soaps are those soaps or salts of the metallic bases other than sodium or potassium. The Study of the preparation, properties and uses of metallic soaps is rather an old one, most of the research along that line being done during the last quartile of the nineteenth century. Nothing of any importance has been done of late years in this field of research. Nearly all the work has been done by foreign investigators. The metallic soaps of oleic acid are …

The Separation Of Inorganic Salts From Food Products By Dialysis, Nicholas H. Tasto Jun 1925

The Separation Of Inorganic Salts From Food Products By Dialysis, Nicholas H. Tasto

Bachelors’ Theses

The phenomena of the separation of substances by 'Various membranes was first -discovered by Thomas Graham, who found that certain materials passed through membranes much more readily than others. This consequently afforded him a norm by which he distinguished a variety of substances. Those which passed through the membrane most readily he called crystalloids, because of their crystalline nature. Those which were retained colloids, because of their gelatinous or glue like consistency. The distinguishing factor is however not a legitimate one, because it has been proven by Dr. Kahlenberg that opposite reactions occur.

A Study Of Phytosterol Obtained From Cocoa Beans And Cocoa Butter, Norman Anthony Pokorny Jan 1925

A Study Of Phytosterol Obtained From Cocoa Beans And Cocoa Butter, Norman Anthony Pokorny

Bachelors’ Theses

Despite the fact that considerable work has been done on cholesterol, relatively little is known about its isomer, phytosterol. Both cholesterol and phytosterol belong to the general group of sterols. Cholesterol is described as an aromatic sterol, a mono~atomic secondary alcohol, containing an iso-propyl and a vinyl group, with a terpene-like structure. Cholesterol was first discovered by Conradi in 1775, then by Gren (1788) in biliary calculi. In 1785 Fourcroy isolated cholesterol from gall-stones, one variety of which is composed almost wholly of it, but it was confused with adipocere, until Chevreul (1814) discovered its true nature, when he declared …

The Disintegration Of Refractory Brick By Carbon Monoxide, Wilbur J. Darby Jan 1923

The Disintegration Of Refractory Brick By Carbon Monoxide, Wilbur J. Darby

Masters Theses

"In experimental work carried on at East St. Louis, Illinois in 1916 and 1917, with a furnace of commercial size for the electrothermic dry distillation of zinc ores, a difficulty that developed was the destruction of the firebrick lining in certain parts of the large condenser. The condenser was satisfactory in other ways, yielding a large proportion of the zinc as liquid metal, with no blue powder; but in order to obtain a proper length of service from the condenser it became necessary to find and overcome the cause of the disintegration of the lining ... it will be evident …

The Water Supply Of The City Of Milwaukee With Experimental Data, William K. Stumpf Apr 1922

The Water Supply Of The City Of Milwaukee With Experimental Data, William K. Stumpf

Bachelors’ Theses

All mankind, whether the wandering savage, the isolated pioneer, or the dweller in the congested city, requires a constant supply of water for his needs. This fact is attested to in all the civilizations of the past, and if we go back to biblical times, or to the days of ancient Greece and Rome, we read of the famous wells and aqueducts, from which the inhabitants derived their supplies.

Glucose From Corn Cobs, Barney Nudelman Jan 1921

Glucose From Corn Cobs, Barney Nudelman

Masters Theses

"The efforts of American chemists in recent years have been devoted largely to the utilization of our waste products...Corn cobs offer a particularly inviting field for research along this line on account of the large supply of cobs available and the variety of substances obtainable from them. One of the leaders in this branch of investigation is Dr. F. B. LaForge of the Chemistry Division of the Bureau of Agriculture, who has contributed numerous papers on the subject. In one of these, in collaboration with C. S. Hudson, he describes, among other things, the preparation of glucose, but recognizes the …
