Evaluating The Performance Of Bayesian Removal Models For Estimating Population Density And Detecting Trends With Variable Detection Probability, David R. Stewart Apr 2025

Evaluating The Performance Of Bayesian Removal Models For Estimating Population Density And Detecting Trends With Variable Detection Probability, David R. Stewart

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

Removal models have long been used to estimate population abundance by progressively capturing and removing individuals from a closed population. These models provide a valuable tool for ecological monitoring, but their accuracy depends heavily on assumptions about detection probability, which may decline over successive sampling passes. Traditional removal models assume constant detection probabilities, an assumption that is often violated in real-world applications. This thesis aims to advance hierarchical Bayesian models by accounting for variable detection probabilities, improving the reliability of abundance estimates and trend detection. By integrating simulation-based analyses with empirical data from Lahontan Cutthroat Trout (Oncorhynchus clarkia henshawi …

Navigating Circuit Splits: Analyzing Career Offender Enhancements In The Federal Sentencing Guidelines Through Canons Of Construction, Riley M. Goff

Undergraduate Theses

This paper analyzes the Career Offender Enhancement within the Federal Sentencing Guidelines. This enhancement can provide unequal sentences for similarly situated defendants in different federal circuits. This paper seeks to investigate the current circuit split and utilize the canons of construction to provide a better understanding of how this split could be resolved and the philosophical reasoning. To answer this question, I conducted a case study on four different cases within four different circuits to understand the courts' reasoning behind their application or lack of application of the Career Offender Enhancement. The results show two main issues surrounding the enhancement: …

Discovery Of Suitable Habitat For Freshwater Mussel Species In The Appomattox River Through The Use Of Environmental Dna., Nicholas Duellman Apr 2025

Discovery Of Suitable Habitat For Freshwater Mussel Species In The Appomattox River Through The Use Of Environmental Dna., Nicholas Duellman

Longwood Senior Thesis Proposal

Freshwater mussels are a keystone species providing crucial ecosystem services and river composition resiliency. Anecdotal evidence suggests the presence of freshwater mussels within the Appomattox river, the specifics of population sizes and suitable habitat remains an open question. Environmental DNA (eDNA) usage in conservation ecology has exploded in use within the past two decades, being far less invasive and cost-demanding than traditional methods. An eDNA metabarcoding pipeline of the 16s mitochondrial ribosomal subunit was built in R v. 4.4.2, using dada2 v. 3.2.1 package to trim MinION single read ASV outputs for freshwater mussel species identification in the interest of …

The Grand Narratives: The Rise And Fall Of Universal Philosophical Systems, Gavin S. Litchford Apr 2025

The Grand Narratives: The Rise And Fall Of Universal Philosophical Systems, Gavin S. Litchford

Senior Honors Theses

This thesis reviews the development of narrative and systematic methods of argumentative legitimation in the Western tradition of philosophy from its conception until the present day. Utilizing both primary sources from central figures in key movements within this development process and supplementary secondary sources, this analysis notes which systems were used as appeals to higher authority and the trends in the adoption and transformation of new models. It is demonstrated that the Enlightenment era punctuated a progression begun in the premodern era from simple, cultural narratives to individualized, subjective, and self-perpetuating Grand Narrative systems, and that it generated the preconditions …

Predicting PkA Of Flexible Polybasic Tetra-Aza Macrocycles, Tatum K. Harvey, Kristof Pota, Magy Mekhail, David M. Freire, Donatus A. Agbaglo, Benjamin G. Janesko, Kayla N. Green

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

We present physics-based pKa predictions for a library of tetra-aza macrocycles. These flexible, polybasic molecules exhibit highly charged states and substantial prototropic tautomerism, presenting a challenge for pKa prediction. Our computational protocol combines CREST/xTB conformational sampling, density functional theory (DFT) refinement in continuum solvent, and a linear empirical correction (LEC). This approach predicts known tetra-aza macrocycle pKa to within a root-mean-square deviation 1.2 log units. This approach also provides reasonable predictions for the most stable protomers at different pH. We use this protocol to predict pKa values for four novel, synthetically achievable, …

Evaluating Wrist Placement And Signal Processing Techniques For Real-World Hrv Monitoring Using Ppg, Andrew Murphy Apr 2025

Evaluating Wrist Placement And Signal Processing Techniques For Real-World Hrv Monitoring Using Ppg, Andrew Murphy

College of Computing and Digital Media Dissertations

This thesis investigates trade-offs between signal quality and data coverage in photoplethysmographic (PPG) heart rate variability (HRV) monitoring using wrist-worn devices. The goal was to evaluate whether wrist placement and signal processing techniques can improve measurement reliability in real-world conditions. Data was collected from healthy participants wearing smartwatches on both wrists during rest and a structured math task introducing natural wrist movement. Three distinct processing methodologies were compared, including a proposed Rolling-Standardized Derivative (RSD) approach. Results showed that while HRV signals from both wrists were highly correlated at rest, motion caused a measurable drop in signal quality and inter-wrist agreement, …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

We developed a practical framework to construct digital twins for predicting and optimizing triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC). This study employed 105 TNBC patients from the ARTEMIS trial (NCT02276443, registered on 10/21/2014) who received Adriamycin/Cytoxan (A/C)-Taxol (T). Digital twins were established by calibrating a biology-based mathematical model to patient-specific MRI data, which accurately predicted pathological complete response (pCR) with an AUC of 0.82. We then used each patient's twin to theoretically optimize outcome by identifying their optimal A/C-T schedule from 128 options. The patient-specifically optimized treatment yielded a significant improvement in pCR rate of 20.95-24.76%. Retrospective …

Climate change may transform peatlands from net carbon (C) sinks to C sources, which could result in a positive feedback to global warming. Warmer temperatures might lower water tables, increase the abundance of shrubs, slow Sphagnum and sedge growth and further accelerate the decomposition of dissolved organic matter (DOM) with a concomitant release of C from the surface. Studies in which vascular plant functional groups (PFGs) in peatlands have been manipulated to mimic the potential effects of a warming climate on DOM are scarce. In the subject study, seasonal effects of PFGs on the molecular composition of DOM of peat …

How It Will End: Physical And Philosophical Implications Of The Fate Of Our Universe, Alex Bittle '26 Apr 2025

How It Will End: Physical And Philosophical Implications Of The Fate Of Our Universe, Alex Bittle '26

Honor Scholar Theses

What does physics have to say about the end of our universe? And what does it mean for us, if anything? Answering these questions requires an understanding of the so-called "lambda-cold dark matter" (ΛCDM) model of cosmology, which models the universe as containing an expanding pressure, Λ or dark energy, in a battle with the gravitational attraction provided by dark and regular matter. First, the physics (including observations and theory) of the ΛCDM, including the Big Bang and CMB, the inflationary period, and equations that govern the way the size of the universe changes with respect to time for different …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The precision of floating-point numbers is a critical task in high-performance computing. Many scientific applications rely on floating-point arithmetic, but excessive precision can lead to unnecessary computational overhead. Reducing precision may introduce unacceptable errors. Addressing this trade-off is essential for optimizing performance while ensuring numerical accuracy. In this paper, we present a genetic algorithm-based approach for tuning the precision of floating-point computations. Our method leverages algorithmic differentiation and first-order Taylor series approximation to assess the impact of precision variations efficiently. We employ stochastic partitioning algorithms with multiple precision combinations that meet the error requirements. Moreover, we present a genetic heuristic …

Maxwell’S Equations Optimizer (Meo): A New Physics Based Metaheuristic Optimization Algorithm For Solving Optimization Problems, Samia Mandour, Abduallah Gamal, Ahmed Sleem, Mohamed Belal, Nebojsa Bacanin

Sustainable Machine Intelligence Journal

In this paper, a new metaheuristic algorithm inspired by the principles of physics called Maxwell's Equations Optimizer (MEO) is presented. Maxwell's are considered one of the most well-known equations in the field of physics. These equations are a set of four equations that describe the behavior of electric and magnetic fields, their interactions and the influence of objects. Simulating how equations behave is the core concept of MEO. These equations behave according to two main behaviors. They are as follows: divergence behavior, and curl behavior. Divergence measures the tendency of the charge to collect or disperse at a point (exploration …

32 - Nested Two Level Decomposition For Quantum Computing, Andrew Maciejunes, John Stenger, Dan Gunlycke, Nikos Chrisochoides

Undergraduate Research Symposium

Abstract—We present a two-level decomposition strategy for solving the Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP) using the Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA). A Problem-Level Decomposition (PLD) partitions a 9-node (72-qubit) VRP into smaller Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) instances. Each TSP is then further simplified via Circuit-Level Decomposition (CLD), enabling execution on near-term quantum devices. Our approach achieves up to 90% reductions in circuit depth and qubit count. These results demonstrate the feasibility of solving VRPs previously too complex for quantum simulators and provide early evidence of potential quantum utility.
