An Investigation Of Solvent Extraction Techniques In The Determination Of Formation Constants Of Complex Species In Aqueous Silver Chloride Solution, David Martin Bodily Jul 1960

An Investigation Of Solvent Extraction Techniques In The Determination Of Formation Constants Of Complex Species In Aqueous Silver Chloride Solution, David Martin Bodily

Theses and Dissertations

Solvent extraction techniques have been used to determine formation constants for molecular silver chloride and dichloro silver (I) ion in unsaturated aqueous solutions. Nitrobenzene was used to extract the molecular silver chloride from the aqueous silver chloride solution. The total concentration of silver in each phase was determined by radioassay techniques and related by an expression involving the equilibrium constants. The reciprocal of the distribution ratio times the activity of the chloride ion was plotted versus the activity of the chloride ion and portions of the curve were analyzed by the method of least squares to obtain values for the …

A Study Of The Curcumin Method For Boron Determination, James Edward Hardcastle Jul 1960

A Study Of The Curcumin Method For Boron Determination, James Edward Hardcastle

Master's Theses

The purpose of the research project, of which this thesis is a partial report, was two fold: first, to develop a method for determining small quantities of boron, and second, to develop a rapid field test for the determination of atmospheric boron. A literature survey revealed that the curcumin method is the most sensitive colorimetric method presently available for boron determination. Also, the curcumin paper test should be readily adapted to the determination of atmospheric boron.

The Dilute Solution Chemistry Of Antimony, Kent H. Jones Jun 1960

The Dilute Solution Chemistry Of Antimony, Kent H. Jones

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Investigation of the chemistry of the elements by conventional methods is generally limited to concentrations on the order of 10-5 M or higher. The discovery of radio-activity opened new fields in chemistry among which is the obtaining of information concerning chemical behavior of elements at very low concentrations. For many years after the initial discovery of radioactivity in 1896 by Becquerel, the study of low-concentration chemistry was limited to about ten naturally occurring radioactive elements. A renewed interest in this field was generated after 1934 when it was discovered by Curie and Joliot that radioactive elements could be artificially …

Preparation And Infrared Spectrum Of Dimethyl Pinate In An Attempt To Determine The Configuration Of Pinic Acid, Margaret Schormuller Jun 1960

Preparation And Infrared Spectrum Of Dimethyl Pinate In An Attempt To Determine The Configuration Of Pinic Acid, Margaret Schormuller

Bachelors’ Theses

The esters if pinic acid are in increasing demand for low temperature lubricants, and certain esters are also useful as plasticizers. In spite of the vast amount of work that has been done with pinic acid and its esters, its geometrical configuration has not yet been satisfactorily established. Stereoisomers may result from both geometrical and optical isomerism. If the cis configuration is assumed to be the dd-enantiomorph, a total of four enantiomorphs are possible.

A Study Of The Variables Affecting The Addition Of Nitrosyl Chloride To Alpha Methyl Styrene, Mary Jane Buchek May 1960

A Study Of The Variables Affecting The Addition Of Nitrosyl Chloride To Alpha Methyl Styrene, Mary Jane Buchek

Bachelors’ Theses

While working with two compounds, one of which was an olefin, and the other which was Nitrosyl Chloride, Dr. N. Hoffman noticed that although a normal reaction appeared to be taking place, two relatively unusual products were obtained.

As the problem was suggested to me at this point, a literature search was started, first of all, to find out the specific mechanism governing the addition of Nitrosyl Chloride to olefins; secondly, to find out if anyone who had done any type of work at all with Nitrosyl Chloride had obtained the same unusual results as were obtained here; and finally, …

An Investigation Of The Formation Constant Of Molecular Silver Chloride Using Ion Exchange Techniques.|Nii.|Pan Investigation Of The Rate Of Precipitation Of Silver Sulfide By Thioacetamide, James W. Pyper May 1960

An Investigation Of The Formation Constant Of Molecular Silver Chloride Using Ion Exchange Techniques.|Nii.|Pan Investigation Of The Rate Of Precipitation Of Silver Sulfide By Thioacetamide, James W. Pyper

Theses and Dissertations

The first part of this work reports on the investigation of the formation constant of molecular silver chloride using ion exchange techniques. In order to determine the formation constant, it was necessary to develop a method of rinsing the sorbed molecular silver chloride from the resin. It was found that desorption with nitrobenzene would remove the sorbed molecular species. However, the formation constant was not calculated since the nitrobenzene used contained hydrogen ion and chloride ion which removed silver ion as well as the molecular species. In the study of the formation of silver sulfide by the reaction between the …

Interaction Of Riboflavin With Molybdenum, Jacques Tocatlian May 1960

Interaction Of Riboflavin With Molybdenum, Jacques Tocatlian

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Molybdenum may function as a catalyst in promoting and controlling some of the complex chemical reactions that go on in living systems. The lack of understanding which exists about these reactions is due to their obvious complexity and to the extremely minute quantities of molybdenum involved. Traces of molybdenum have been shown to have spectacular results on the growth of plants when added to certain soils. This metal is also required for the growth of azobacter, the nitrogen-fixing bacteria (1).

Molybdenum has been shown to be present in four enzymes: nitrate reductase (2), hydrogenase (3), xanthine oxidase (4) and aldehyde …

Important theoretical and experimental developments in the field of electrocrystallization on single crystals are briefly reviewed and new data presented. The deposition of nickel from a Watts-type bath onto electrolytically polished mono crystals of copper is the system chosen for study. Various aspects of the structural changes in the deposit with increasing thickness are considered. The electron microscope is the main tool employed and the deposit is studied by detaching it from the basis metal as well as by the use of surface replicas. Short backgrounds in crystallography and electron microscopy are included.

Preparation Of Elemental Boron And Measurement Of Its Emittance At Incandescent Temperatures, Claude P. Talley Jan 1960

Preparation Of Elemental Boron And Measurement Of Its Emittance At Incandescent Temperatures, Claude P. Talley

Master's Theses

The normal spectral emittance at 0. 65 microns of elemental boron specimens was measured at incandescent temperatures by the hollow-tube method, This was made possible by depositing boron onto thin-walled hollow tubes of graphite and molybdenum. An approximate value of the total hemispherical emittance for boron was also obtained. The deposition of boron was accomplished by chemical vapor plating with boron tribromide and hydrogen. The boron produced was characterized in several ways.

The Dielectric Strength Of Some Anti-Corrosive Paints, John Harvey Gustafson Jan 1960

The Dielectric Strength Of Some Anti-Corrosive Paints, John Harvey Gustafson

Masters Theses

"Metals undergo chemical reaction with nonmetallic elements of their surroundings to produce compounds which are either oxides or salts. These corrosion products, as they are called, may accelerate, impede, or have no influence on the course of further corrosion. It is unfortunate that iron, the metal of greatest use to man, receives very little protection from its corrosion products. There are no easy or inexpensive means of prevention of this corrosion and at best the reactions can only be controlled. One method of control is the use of anti-corrosive paints. Their protection is produced by placing an inert, continuous, and …

Tetracycline-7-Boronic Acid, William Denham Rhoads Jan 1960

Tetracycline-7-Boronic Acid, William Denham Rhoads

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this study is the preparation of a tetracycline-boron-10 derivative which is stable under biological conditions. The boron-10 should then provide a concentration of material capable of accepting thermal neutrons, thus producing localized high-energy alpha radiation. The fact that the tetracyclines are not retained by normal tissue should remove the danger of destruction of this tissue.

Oxygen Permeability Of Free Paint Films, Janice I. Kellerman Jan 1960

Oxygen Permeability Of Free Paint Films, Janice I. Kellerman

Masters Theses

"As early as the mid 1800’s investigations were performed on the gas passage through rubber, but it is only comparatively recently that plastic polymeric materials have come into prominence. One interesting aspect of much experimentation begun was that of permeability, and it was soon evident that, in general, polymeric materials have extremely low permeability of gases. This is, in essence, the basis for use of plastics as packaging materials, balloons, and in many other designs and fabrications where it is desirous and/or necessary to exclude air.

There are several variables which must be taken into consideration in the evaluation of …

The Cytochrome Composition Of Bacillus Subtilis And Bacillus Megaterium, John Harvey Mangum Aug 1959

The Cytochrome Composition Of Bacillus Subtilis And Bacillus Megaterium, John Harvey Mangum

Theses and Dissertations

A spectroscopic and enzymatic investigation of the cytochromes of B. megaterium and B. subtilis was conducted. Attempts were made to isolate and characterize the individual cytochromes as well as to determine the locale of such activities as cytochrome c oxidase, DPNH oxidase, succinic dehydrogenase, cytochrome c reductase and diaphorse. Only two methods proved effective in liberating the cytochromes; disruption of the cells with sonic osillations and grinding tlhe cells with alumina. These procedures caused a fragmentation of the cell membrane. It was found that the entire cytochrome complement of these two bacteria was bound intimately to particles which most likely …

Liquid Scintillators. Some Aryl Substituted Phenanthrenes And Dihydrophenanthrenes, And Related P-Terphenyls And P-Quaterphenyls, Stephen Paul Birkeland

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

With the advent of good commercially available photomultiplier tubes, scintillation counters have become increasingly popular for laboratory use. Although there are a number of materials such as ionic crystals, covalent crystals, plastics, and liquid organic solutions, which are used in scintillation counters, liquid organic solutions offer distinct advantages. Because the organic solutes used in liquid scintillation systems have decay times of the order of 10-8 second, systems with resolving times of the order of 5x10-10 second may be obtained. This represents an improvement by a factor of 104 over gas counters and 102 over scintillation systems …
