An Investigation Of The Isotopic Exchange Of Arsenic Atoms Between Arsenic(Iii) And Arsenic(V) In Aqueous Hydrochloric Acid Solutions, Lewis L. Anderson Jun 1961

An Investigation Of The Isotopic Exchange Of Arsenic Atoms Between Arsenic(Iii) And Arsenic(V) In Aqueous Hydrochloric Acid Solutions, Lewis L. Anderson

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

An isotopic exchange reaction is a chemical reaction in which atoms of a given element interchange between two or more chemical forms of the element. A homogeneous stable system is one in which all reactants are in chemical equilibrium and distributed uniformly throughout a single phase. An example of isotopic exchange is the interchange of iodine atoms between iodide ions and ethyl iodide, where the asterisk indicates radioactive atoms of iodine.

The Reaction Of N, N-Disubstituted Ketohydrazones With Lead Tetraacetate, Elisabeth Cerda Jun 1961

The Reaction Of N, N-Disubstituted Ketohydrazones With Lead Tetraacetate, Elisabeth Cerda

Masters Theses

Introduction

The reaction of lead tetraacetate with compounds of the following general structure (not able to enter here) was first reported by Iffland and Criner (12). In the case of ketoximes (A = oxygern), a nitrosoacetate was produced which was oxidized to the more stable acetoxy-nitrocompound as follows: (not able to enter here)

The generality of the reaction was established by preparation of a series of acetoxy-nitrocompounds from alicyclic and aliphatic ketoximes. The apparently similar reaction of cyclohexanonephenylhydrazone (A = N-¢) with lead tetraacetate was reported, but the reaction product was not identified.

Phase Equilibria In Fused Salt Systems: Binary Systems Of Plutonium(Iii) Chloride With The Chlorides Of Magnesium, Calcium Strontium, And Barium, Karl W. R. Johnson May 1961

Phase Equilibria In Fused Salt Systems: Binary Systems Of Plutonium(Iii) Chloride With The Chlorides Of Magnesium, Calcium Strontium, And Barium, Karl W. R. Johnson

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Fused salt systems containing oxides have received the most attention to date, because of their occurrence in minerals and ores and their application to ceramics. The next most widely studied of group of compounds are the metal halides, particularly the metal chlorides. Despite the fact that many of the metal chlorides are hygroscopic, the salts lend themselves to experimentation because a large majority undergo stable solid-liquid transformations below 1000 degrees C, are generally ionic, and are relatively non-corrosive.

Experimental Studies Of The Visible Absorption Spectrum Of Titanium (Iii) Acetylacetonate In Solutions And Rigid Glasses, Arthur L. Langhorst Jr.

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Titanium (III) acetylacetonate was synthesized and the visible absorption spectrum was measured. A prominent absorption band, ymax at approximately 6000 was found with molar absorption coefficient of ~1000. The spectrum was investigated at temperatures ranging from 25 degrees C to 77 degrees K. At 7 7 degrees K the band was resolved into five well defined peaks at 4750, 5100, 5520, 5950 and 6460. An apparatus for obtaining spectrophotometric measurements of solution and rigid glasses was designed and fabricated.

The Synthesis Of Potential Antitumor Compounds, Duane L. Aldous May 1961

The Synthesis Of Potential Antitumor Compounds, Duane L. Aldous

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

The antitumor activity found in such ring systems as the purine, pyrazolo [3,4-d] pyrimidine, and the 8-azapurine prompted the preparation of the imidazo [4,5-d] pyridazine ring system. Castle and Seese were one of the first to study this ring system. 4-Aminoimidazo[4,5-d]pyridazine possessed some anitumor activity. This antitumor activity suggested the preparation of the 4,7-disubstituted-aminoimidazo{4,5-d]pyridazines reported here. The antileukemic activity reported for 6-purinethiol led to the synthesis of several 4- and/or 7-mono-and disubstitutedthioimidazo[4,5-d]pyridazines.

Spectroscopic Studies Of The Luminescences Of Rare Earth Chelates, Ruth Elaine Whan May 1961

Spectroscopic Studies Of The Luminescences Of Rare Earth Chelates, Ruth Elaine Whan

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

A variety of lanthanide chelates were prepared for preliminary luminescence studies under excitation by ultraviolet light. From these, chelates of benzoylacetone, dibenzoylmethane, tribenzoylmethane, and 8-hydroxyquinoline were selected for more extensive investigation. Energies of the lowest excited singlet and triplet states of the chelates were determined. Average values of 24,500 cm-1 and 20,500 cm-1 respectively were obtained for the dibenzoylmethides and 24,400 cm-1 and 21,450 cm-1 for the benzoylacetonates. Only small variations of a few hundred wavenumbers in the positions of the excited states were found as the chelated ion was varied. This investigation in conjunction with …

Phosphorus Status Of Genola Soils In Utah, Warren E. Bendixen May 1961

Phosphorus Status Of Genola Soils In Utah, Warren E. Bendixen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

With increasing pressure on economical production of crops, more fertilizers are being applied to the soil each year to increase crop yields. Economical production of crops with applications of fertilizer requires an evaluation of the essential elements of the various crops so applications of fertilizer will not exceed the law of diminishing returns.

Because varying soil, moisture, and climatic conditions influence the response to added fertilizers, some workers (18, 26, 38) have contended that the only reliable way of determining the fertilization needs of a crop is to conduct a trial on the particular farm. The length of time involved …

The Mineral Content Of Various Sections Of Some Plants As Influenced By Conditions Associated With Lime-Induced Chlorosis, Hyrum Del Var Petersen May 1961

The Mineral Content Of Various Sections Of Some Plants As Influenced By Conditions Associated With Lime-Induced Chlorosis, Hyrum Del Var Petersen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The so-called "lime-induced" chlorosis has been recognized for many years as a problem where plants are grown on calcareous soils. The characteristics associated with lime-induced chlorosis are the same as those associated with iron deficiency chlorosis--interveinal yellowing of the leaves at the meristemic region combined with reduced vigor of the plant as a whole. Lime-induced chlorosis is unique in that the iron content of both chlorotic plant and the soil do not always show a deficiency in iron when chemically analyzed. This leads to the theory that iron is inactivated in both the soil and plant.

Although no single factor …

The objective of the experimental work was to prepare compounds having potential pharmacological activity and to determine the physical constants of these compounds.

Analysis Of Scintillation Pulse Shapes For Stilbene Using Neutron And Gamma-Ray Excitation, Roland Lee Bowles Apr 1961

Analysis Of Scintillation Pulse Shapes For Stilbene Using Neutron And Gamma-Ray Excitation, Roland Lee Bowles

Master's Theses

In experimental nuclear physics it is often desirable to detect neutrons in the presence of a heavy gemna-ray background. This situation presents a problem since neutron counters also respond to gamma radiation. However, recently it has been shown that the scintillation counter employing an organic crystal scintillator and pulse-shape discrimination may well furnish the solution to this problem.

Coordination Of 2, 8- Bishydroxymethyl - 2, Elements Of The First Transition Series, Charles Edward O'Rear

Master's Theses

The preparation and study of 2, 8-bishydroxymethyl-2, 8-dimethyl-3, 7-diaza-1,5,9-nonanetriol with ions of the first transition series have been investigated. Spectrophotometric studies of solutions of this compound with Cu(II) and Ni(II) ions gave evidence of the formation of complexes containing one mole of ligand per metal ion throughout a wide pH range. The Cu(II) complex, the yellow colored Fe(III) complex formed at high pH, and the light blue colored Ni(II) complex have remained stable over several months. The red colored Ni(II) complex changes slowly into a more stable greenish-yellow complex. The ligand formed weaker complexes with Co(II) and Mn(II). Data from …

The work has been limited to Gum Spirits of Turpentine and Steam Distilled Wood Turpentine since these are of chief importance and are the only types commonly retailed in small packages.

There have been three objectives:

1. To develop a method based on gas chromatography for distinguishing between Steam Distilled Wood Turpentine and Gum Spirits of Turpentine, and detection of mixtures and adulteration.

2. To identify as many components of the two turpentines …

Minor Elements Can Be Overdone, L T. Jones Jan 1961

Minor Elements Can Be Overdone, L T. Jones

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

T H E term "minor elements" which is now commonly used and well understood by farmers and gardeners, refers to the five essential plant foods—copper, zinc, manganese, molybdenum and boron.

These five essential plant foods are needed by all plants in minute quantities and it is relatively easy to use them in excess of actual requirements or even in toxic amounts.

In practice this is not usually a problem with cereals and pastures. The important exception is when zinc alone is added to a cereal crop low in copper and the extra zinc accentuates the copper deficiency, and poorer yields …

Evaluation Of The Force Constants Of Non-Polar Gases From Viscosity Data, Kei-Sin Wei Jan 1961

Evaluation Of The Force Constants Of Non-Polar Gases From Viscosity Data, Kei-Sin Wei

Masters Theses

"The analytical expressions for the transport coefficients (i.e. viscosity, thermal conductivity, and diffusivity) of an ideal gas can be derived from the kinetic theory of gases. It is also possible to make these analytical expressions adequate for real gases if the intermolecular forces of attraction and repulsion for these gases have been taken into consideration.

The intermolecular forces have been studied by many investigators. The Lennard-Jones potential is one of the most realistic semi-empirical statements which represents particularly the intermolecular forces of attraction and repulsion for non-polar gases.

The values of the Lennard-Jones potential parameters or the force constants of …

The Carbon Compounds Of The Primeval Atmosphere, James Sherman Rogers Jan 1961

The Carbon Compounds Of The Primeval Atmosphere, James Sherman Rogers

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The question of how and when life originated on t his planet has always been an intriguing one, exceeded perhaps in fascination only by that area of speculation which concerns itself with death and the afterlife . The latter problem has generally been approached along theological lines; the former problem , that of the origin of life, has been widely investigated along scientific lines as well . Indeed, the origin of life has always been one of the fundamental problems of science, and the increasingly sophisticated answers to the problem reflect the increasing potence and applicability of the methods of …

Analysis Of The A3(X3)3 Nuclear Spin System And -Electron Coupled Hyperfine Splitting Constants In Aromatic Hydrocarbons, Juana Acrivos Jan 1961

Analysis Of The A3(X3)3 Nuclear Spin System And -Electron Coupled Hyperfine Splitting Constants In Aromatic Hydrocarbons, Juana Acrivos

Faculty Publications, Chemistry

The nuclear spin functions for the A3(X3)3 system have been developed and used to analyse the NMR spectra of (CH3)3C6H3 and (CF3)3C6H3. The π-electron coupled hyperfine splitting constants, obtained from the Ramsey theory with simple Hückel M.O.'s for benzene and without the assumption of an average energy of excitation for the virtual processes which give rise to the coupling, are in agreement with the hyperfine constants observed between the methyl groups and the ring protons in the above compounds.

Identification Of The Products And Mechanism Of Decomposition Of Thiazate, Paul Edward Williams Jan 1961

Identification Of The Products And Mechanism Of Decomposition Of Thiazate, Paul Edward Williams

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This work is an additional facet of the research undertaken by Dr. Herschel Frye of the Department of Chemistry of the University of the Pacific while he was a graduate student at the University of Oregon. Frye succeeded in making an analytical reagent for zinc and other transition metals similar to dithiszone but water soluble. His approach was to to sulfonate the benzene rings thus giving water solubility because of the ionic nature of the sulfonic acid. The new reagent-tensed thiazate--was quite successful in its purpose, but the sections of the compound were somewhat different than dithizone. The purpose of …

The Determination Of Ethanol In Aqueous Solution By Gas-Liquid Partition Chromatography, Robert L. Morrison Jan 1961

The Determination Of Ethanol In Aqueous Solution By Gas-Liquid Partition Chromatography, Robert L. Morrison

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The present chemical and physical methods for the determination of ethyl alcohol are all subject to systematic errors derived from any of a number of interfacing substances usually present in solution with the ethanol. Some of the most popular methods are slow and tedious and require a good deal of skill and technique to perform. The dichromate (2), pycnometer and refractometer methods are three such methods. The interfering substances most often present in industrial and food products are fusel oils and acetaldehyde. These substances interfere in the three methods just mentioned. It is of course possible to analyze for these …
