Evolving Design Critique For A Changing Industry, Sejin Hwang, Amy Ai, Leo Bang, Yuchen Chen, Kathryn Chen, Tiffany Chang, Stephen Jiang, Chloe Jo, Eileen Lee, Nicole Lu, Ray Liu, Kevin Wei, Elaine Zhang, Ellano Zhou Feb 2025

Evolving Design Critique For A Changing Industry, Sejin Hwang, Amy Ai, Leo Bang, Yuchen Chen, Kathryn Chen, Tiffany Chang, Stephen Jiang, Chloe Jo, Eileen Lee, Nicole Lu, Ray Liu, Kevin Wei, Elaine Zhang, Ellano Zhou

Student Work

This class serves as an exploratory practice in response to existing studies evaluating critique environments in the design industry. Previous studies identified three key limitations in the critique process: (1) a lack of experience for novice designers working with non-designers when reviewing their work, (2) an ineffective final review structure, and (3) a need for a more constructive and engaging feedback-sharing environment.1 To address these challenges, the course was designed to “critique” critique activities and develop strategic solutions to transform the way design work is reviewed, analyzed, and critiqued. The course was part of a pilot fall semester program called …

Organizational Readiness As A Predictor Of Successful Trauma-Informed Change Within Child Welfare Agencies, Jennette Allen-Mccombs Feb 2025

Organizational Readiness As A Predictor Of Successful Trauma-Informed Change Within Child Welfare Agencies, Jennette Allen-Mccombs

Journal of Human Services: Training, Research, and Practice

The literature is replete with calls to reform the child welfare system (Dettlaff et al., 2020; Lindell et al., 2020; McTavish et al., 2018). Five child welfare organizations in one northeastern state in the U.S. participated in a pilot program to implement trauma-informed organizational change (TOC). This study explored the extent to which child welfare agencies demonstrated readiness to adopt change. The researcher used a directed content analysis approach to analyze previously collected staff meeting minutes, consultant notes, and other TOC-related documents collected during implementation. Findings support Armenakis et al.'s (2000) organizational readiness for change theory, which suggests that increased …

Validation Of A Novel Landmark-Guided Intra-Articular Postero-Medial Surgeon-Administered Injection Technique, Nicolas Piuzzi, Andrew Spitzer, Jason Mussell, Ignacio Pasqualini, Stan Dysart, Jeffrey Gonzales, Michael Mont, Jess H. Lonner, Md, William Mihalko

Rothman Institute Papers

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to define an intra-articular surgeon-administered technique that may be comparable to ultrasound (US)-guided adductor canal block (ACB).

METHODS: Five cadaver lower limbs were examined. An anesthesiologist administered a US-guided ACB using 20 mL of dilute indocyanine dye. An orthopedic surgeon performed a medial parapatellar arthrotomy and introduced an 18-gauge needle 1-2 cm proximal to the palpated adductor tubercle angled posteromedially. Needle position and dye spread were fluoroscopically documented.

RESULTS: This technique consistently reached the infrapatellar branch of the saphenous nerve, nerve to the vastus medialis muscle, and posterior capsule, with minimal proximal dye spread.

CONCLUSIONS: This …

It's Just A Game! Effects Of Fantasy In A Storified Test On Applicant Reactions, Marie L. Ohlms, Klaus G. Melchers, Filip Lievens Feb 2025

It's Just A Game! Effects Of Fantasy In A Storified Test On Applicant Reactions, Marie L. Ohlms, Klaus G. Melchers, Filip Lievens

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

There is increasing attention to storification of assessments (i.e., embedding a storyline into a non-storified assessment) in research and practice and to gamified and game-based assessment in general. However, there is a surprising lack of agreement and of recommendations regarding what level of fantasy of the storyline one should choose for the storification from the perspective of applicant reactions. A distinction is typically made between fantasy (e.g., fighting aliens) and realistic (e.g., workday simulations) storylines, with both choices having their advantages and disadvantages. In this study, a sample of 195 participants was shown either a storified realistic test, a storified …

Retirement And Organizations: Advocating Organizational Responsibility For Retirement In Practice And Scholarship, Valerie Caines, Gokhan Ertug, Prashant Bordia, Deidra J. Schleicher Feb 2025

Retirement And Organizations: Advocating Organizational Responsibility For Retirement In Practice And Scholarship, Valerie Caines, Gokhan Ertug, Prashant Bordia, Deidra J. Schleicher

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In this editorial we discuss organizations’ role in the process of retirement. We argue that organizations have abdicated their moral obligation to older workers, thereby negatively impacting older workers’ wellbeing and their successful transition to retirement. We also note that organizational studies scholars have not paid adequate attention to that negligence, or its alternatives. We suggest that, among other reasons, this oversight can be a result of the comparatively privileged socioeconomic positions of faculty in business schools vis-à-vis older workers in many other occupations, as well as to a discord between traditional human capital and human resource management theories and …

Star Inventors, Knowledge Complexity And Collaborative Ties: What Drives Deference In Invention Teams?, Metin Onal Vural, Simon J.D. Schillebeeckx Feb 2025

Star Inventors, Knowledge Complexity And Collaborative Ties: What Drives Deference In Invention Teams?, Metin Onal Vural, Simon J.D. Schillebeeckx

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper provides an empirical investigation of factors that drive deference in an invention team setting. Drawing on innovation literature, we hypothesise and test the distinct factors that determine the extent of deference an inventor receives in an invention team. Using patent data from U.S. semiconductor industry, we show that star inventors command deference among their peers and that this effect is moderated by stars’ embeddedness in knowledge, social and geographical context. Deference is amplified when stars have complex knowledge, but not necessarily when they have strong ties. When the stars are geographically distant from their peers, the amount of …

A New Perspective On Transfer Of Training: When Does Training At Work Transfer To Family?, Heidi M. Baumann Feb 2025

A New Perspective On Transfer Of Training: When Does Training At Work Transfer To Family?, Heidi M. Baumann

Faculty Publications – Management

This study offers a new perspective on the transfer of training by examining whether skills, knowledge, and attitudes gained during training at work may transfer outside of work to improve employees’ family roles. The current research conceptualizes transfer of training to family as a specific instance of work-family enrichment and highlights the interconnectedness of individuals’ work and family roles via training transfer. An integration of the transfer of training literature with work-family enrichment research and self-determination theory provides a theoretical foundation for the proposed positive transfer of training to family model. Hypotheses were tested in a between-person on-line vignette experiment …

The employee-organization relationship (EOR) is a key component of organizational behavior. Researchers have consistently shown that employees who perceive that they are supported by their organizations (favorable EORs) tend to have positive attitudes and behave in a manner that helps the organization to reach its goals. For many years, the reciprocity norm (e.g. felt obligation) has been a widely accepted explanation for the EOR. Yet, despite calls to explore additional pathways, little work has examined other mediating mechanisms between favorable EORs and outcomes. We draw on the affect theory of social exchange to argue for the mediating effects of gratitude, …

From The Accounting Graduate’S And The Employer’S Perspectives: Exploring The Key Roles In Making Skill Acquisition And Transfer Happen, Gary Pan, Poh Sun Seow, Clarence Goh, Duan Ning, Magdeleine Lew

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

While extant research has discussed how a teacher’s role may have to change when facilitating accounting students’ learning in today’s fast-moving accounting landscape, nevertheless, little is known about the roles played by the accounting graduate and the employer in a similar process. To plug this knowledge gap in the accounting education literature, this study aims to address the following research question: What are the key roles played by the accounting graduate and the employer in the process of skill acquisition and transfer from the university to the workplace? By applying Fitts and Posner’s (1967) three stages of learning and adopting …

Cultivating Consumption Of Biobased Product, Nima Nejadrezaei Feb 2025

Cultivating Consumption Of Biobased Product, Nima Nejadrezaei

Doctoral

Consumers play a critical role in transitioning towards bioeconomy. However, their positive attitudes and interest in biobased products often do not lead to actual usage because of the complexity of the decision-making process. Despite the bioeconomy’s importance, research on consumer behaviour regarding biobased products remains limited. This study bridged gaps by examining consumer perspectives on biobased products. It sought to identify factors influencing consumer perspectives and develop an integrative model where acceptance preceded actual use. Focusing on consumers from the Republic of Ireland, a test market with strong government commitment to the bioeconomy, private sector and research centre investments and …

Dentistry And The Law: What You Should Know About Collecting Past-Due Accounts, Daniel Schulte J.D.

The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association

Michigan law regulates debt collection practices for dental offices collecting past-due accounts. While practices can collect their own debts, they must follow specific restrictions regarding workplace communications. The law prohibits harassment, deceptive practices, and sharing debt information with employers or coworkers. Contact at workplaces must be discreet, civil, and cease if the patient expresses inconvenience. Communications are restricted between 9 p.m. and 8 a.m. without permission.

The New Professional: The Importance Of Contract Negotiations For Associate Dentists, Amrita Patel D.D.S.

The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association

Associate dentists must carefully negotiate their contracts to secure favorable terms that impact their career trajectory and job satisfaction. Key areas for negotiation include compensation structure, comprehensive benefits, work schedule flexibility, professional development opportunities, and performance expectations. Understanding and negotiating these elements, along with seeking legal counsel for contract review, helps ensure a balanced agreement that protects the dentist's interests while establishing clear expectations for both parties.

Seven Recommendations For Managing Projectification, Steve Lovett, Taiwo O.O. Abraham, Joo Y. Jung

Management Faculty Publications

Over the past half-century projects and project-based work have become more and more important to organizations. This may be inevitable due to the increasing volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity of our modern world. Many organizations routinely use project structures to develop new products, enter new markets, or upgrade IT systems, for example. A project is a set of tasks aimed at achieving a specific outcome, and a project structure is a temporary structure within which the tasks are performed. Projectification is a process of change whereby organizations increasingly adopt a project way of work. Hence, a projectified organization becomes a …

Unveiling The Nature Of Peer Development Groups: A Systematic Review, Conceptual Framework, And Research Pathways, Roman Terekhin, S. R. Aurora

Management Faculty Publications

This research provides a systematic review of the literature on peer development groups (PDGs), a promising yet underexplored tool for individual and leadership development. Despite the growing interest in PDGs from both scholars and practitioners, the field remains fragmented, with inconsistent terminologies and limited theoretical grounding. This review seeks to clarify the core components, boundary conditions, inputs, processes, and outcomes of effective PDGs in professional settings, addressing the confusion and gaps in existing research. By adopting an adjudication approach, we provide a comprehensive synthesis of the evidence regarding the defining characteristics of PDGs and their impacts on individual development. We …

The Dark Side Of Competition In Developing Economies: Evidence From Closely Held Smes, Siamak Javadi, Mark Kroll, Yu Liu

Finance Faculty Publications

This paper investigates how product market competition affects the performance of closely held small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in developing economies. In contrast to prior findings that focus on large publicly traded companies in developed economies, we find that market competition has a negative effect on firm performance. Our findings are robust to different measures of competition and firm performance and survive after addressing endogeneity issues. We provide evidence that the adverse effect of competition is channeled through increased corruption. Our findings further suggest that firms respond to competition by attempting to acquire more financial resources and government support, adopt …

Status Incongruence Effects Under Conditions Of Task Interdependence: Too Close For Comfort, María Del Carmen Triana, M. Fernanda Garcia, Orlando Richard, İlhami Yücel, Rawia Ahmed

All Works

There are five generations of employees in the workforce. Such a distribution of ages makes it more likely that employees will be in non-traditional situations where workers are not only older but have more work experience, organizational tenure, or education than their supervisors. These situations reflect status incongruence and defy traditional workplace norms. We find that status incongruence with one's supervisor is negatively associated with job satisfaction. There is an indirect effect between status incongruence and organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) which is transmitted through job satisfaction. The relationship between status incongruence and job satisfaction is more negative when task interdependence …

Uncertainty In Pricing And Risk Measurement Of Survivor Contracts, Kendrick Raymond So, Stephanie Claire Cruz, Elias Antonio Marcela, Jeric C. Briones, Len Patrick Dominic Garces

Mathematics Faculty Publications

As life expectancy increases, pension plans face growing longevity risk. Standardized longevity-linked securities such as survivor contracts allow pension plans to transfer this risk to capital markets. However, more consensus is needed on the appropriate mortality model and premium principle to price these contracts. This paper investigates the impact of the mortality model and premium principle choice on the pricing, risk measurement, and modeling of survivor contracts. We present a framework for evaluating risk measures associated with survivor contracts, specifically survivor forwards (S-forward) and survivor swaps (S-swaps). We analyze how the mortality model and premium principle assumptions affect pricing and …

Curriculum Preferences And Engagement Of Online Entrepreneurship Students: The Influence Of Age And Gender, S. Andrew Starbird, Jill M. Martin, Trish A. Kalbas-Schmidt

Information Systems and Analytics

It is important for instructors and institutions to create learning experiences that are engaging, effective, and meaningful for students. To achieve these goals, instructors must understand the preferences and interests of their students, build engaging lessons based on those interests, and mitigate content that might make students feel excluded. In-person learning allows instructors to gather information about interests and engagement through direct interaction with students. Gathering information about student interests and engagement is more difficult for asynchronous, self-paced, online training programs. In this paper, we assess the interests, engagement, and disengagement of learners accessing online content focused on entrepreneurship. We …
