Is More Always Better? An Experimental Examination Of The Effects Of Feedback Frequency, Narcissistic Oversensitivity, And Growth Mindset On Performance Accuracy, Joseph A. Johnson, Khim Kelly, Wioleta Olczak

Accounting Faculty Research and Publications

The provision of more frequent feedback to employees is increasing, although prior research has found mixed results as to the effect of increased feedback frequency on employee performance. Narcissism research identifies narcissistic oversensitivity as a key narcissistic subdimension that may result in particularly strong responses to performance feedback. We predict and find in an experiment that increased performance feedback frequency has a more negative impact on the performance accuracy of individuals with higher levels of narcissistic oversensitivity and that this negative interactive effect of feedback frequency and narcissistic oversensitivity is mitigated by the priming of a growth mindset. These results …

The Effect Of Narcissism And Contract Frame On Employee Performance In The Presence Of An Ex Ante Target, Theresa Libby, Wioleta Olczak Apr 2025

The Effect Of Narcissism And Contract Frame On Employee Performance In The Presence Of An Ex Ante Target, Theresa Libby, Wioleta Olczak

Accounting Faculty Research and Publications

Incentive contracts containing ex ante targets are prevalent in organizations. Although prior research indicates that contract frame has no significant impact on employee performance when an ex ante target is assigned, we provide a more nuanced view by examining the role of narcissism in this relationship. Results indicate when an ex ante target is assigned, less narcissistic employees perform better than more narcissistic employees regardless of contract frame. In addition, target difficulty plays a role. When narcissism is lower, employees working under a less difficult target perform better than those working under a more difficult target, but there is no …

Do “Say-On-Pay” Votes Affect M&A Decisions?, Shantanu Dutta, Micah S. Officer, Ruixiang Wang, Pengcheng Zhu

School of Business

This paper demonstrates that firms receiving above-industry-average support in their “say-on-pay” (SoP) votes engage in more M&A transactions in the subsequent year. Our empirical findings suggest that high levels of SoP voting support may boost managerial confidence, thereby stimulating increased pursuit of acquisitions. Moreover, we observe that managers garnering higher SoP vote support are more likely to secure shareholders' backing in M&A votes, receive higher compensation in successful deals, and face a reduced likelihood of forced turnover following unsuccessful deals. Additionally, we find that both short-term and long-term M&A performance significantly improves in deals announced by managers receiving higher SoP …

After just a few years of working without boundaries, I began to feel the lingering symptoms of stress. Pushing through the stress of running a creative business on my own eventually led to a state of debilitating burnout that caused me to stop all operations and allow my business to run on auto-pilot. Results of this study show a potential beginning of modern-day professional exhaustion which dates to the 17th century when …

Cognitive Processing’S Role In Preventing Consumer Scams, Lana Waschka, Marcus Cunha Jr. Apr 2025

Cognitive Processing’S Role In Preventing Consumer Scams, Lana Waschka, Marcus Cunha Jr.

AMTP Proceedings 2025

Building on the findings of prior Unconscious Thought Theory (UTT) research, which showed how utilizing unconscious processing allowed participants to better identify lies (Reinhard, et al., 2011), the current work proposes a potential solution for consumers to identify and avoid complex scams and frauds: the use of distraction/ unconscious thought while processing information about scams. Through the course of three studies, we find evidence in support of the hypothesis and identify a moderated (relationship status) mediation (materialism) and that the main relationship is moderated by low self-esteem.

This work contributes to the literature by extending the application of unconscious thinking …

Demystifying Proactive Customer Helpers: Where Do We Find Them?, Estelle Van Tonder, Sam Fullerton

AMTP Proceedings 2025

Amid the growing interest in proactive customer helpers, extant research offers surprisingly little guidance on where to find them. Of interest to this study are proactive helpers taking personal initiative in assisting other customers to avoid harmful brands. Guided by the attitude-behavior phenomenon, selected attitudes and behaviors were examined among 347 customers in the United States using survey research. Latent profile analysis aided in obtaining further clarification regarding the profile characteristics of customers who proactively assist other customers with their brand avoidance behaviors in an anti-consumption context. These profile characteristics are useful, as they provide strategic direction on where to …

Consumer Cynicism And Situated Learning: When Is It Best For Consumers To Learn About Service Failures?, Mousumi Bose Godbole

AMTP Proceedings 2025

While prior research has discussed the importance of situated learning and consumer’s contextual cynicism when exposed to service failures, this is the first research that combines the two. Especially, cynical consumers need to learn about service remedies at the time or around the time-of-service failure. Providing information earlier in anticipation of a service failure may not help them in developing trust and empathy of the company and perceive that the company would responsibly resolve the issue. However, it may be okay to inform consumers who are not highly cynical ahead of time to help them prepare for any anticipated service …
