These Dentists Have A Story To Tell; What's Yours?, Rich Evans Nov 2025

These Dentists Have A Story To Tell; What's Yours?, Rich Evans

The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association

Every dentist has his or her own story to tell when it comes to personal and practice success. Each is different, of course, but a recurring theme is how membership in the MDA, ADA, and their local society seems to help them succeed. They find that practice life is somehow better — more rewarding — with membership. Many will tell you that being a member makes them a more satisfied, more grounded professional. In this issue we present the stories of four MDA members who discovered how MDA membership gives them many advantages in their personal and professional lives.

The …

Mda Services: 4 Reasons To Call In The Embezzlement Protection And Investigation Professionals, Reva Darling

The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association

With over 50% of dentists experiencing embezzlement, often due to over-trusting staff with financial tasks, the MDA endorses Prosperident for protection and investigation. Four reasons to seek their help include: inheriting an office manager who knows more about the practice management software than the new owner; financial reports showing income is lower than expected based on patient volume; identifying "red flags" such as an employee refusing vacation or cross-training; and needing proactive strategies to protect cash flow. The average loss is about $109,000. Prosperident offers a $1,500 "First Look" service to covertly review records and identify anomalies, providing evidence needed …

Is Donation Funding A Dilemma For Microfinance Institutions?, Hamid Uddin, Masnun Al Mahi, Shabiha Akter, Sabur Mollah, Jia Liu

Management Faculty Publications

Microfinance institutions (MFIs) play critical roles in providing financial access to low-income communities worldwide. Yet, reliance on donation funding in the operations poses fundamental challenges to their long-term sustainability. These scholars argue that this dependence creates an unclear agency relationship between donors (principal) – providing cost-free funds – and the MFI managers (agent), heightening moral hazard concerns. Also, due to the nature of the business model, MFIs’ operating leverage increases as they increasingly expand lending operations with more cost-free donation funds. Based on a global dataset of 2653 MFIs across 119 countries over 20 years, they find that greater reliance …

Making Institutional Criteria Transparent For Minority Entrepreneurs, Yolanda Christophe Nov 2025

Making Institutional Criteria Transparent For Minority Entrepreneurs, Yolanda Christophe

The Lender Center for Social Justice

Entrepreneurship has become a vital pathway for many minority communities, especially in historically disinvested neighborhoods such as Baltimore’s Black Butterfly. Yet, instead of serving as gateways, mainstream institutions, banks, government agencies, corporations, and landlords too often act as barriers. Entrepreneurs report being denied access without clear explanations, forced to rely on exhausting workarounds like piecing together small grants, leaning on personal networks, or slowly building credibility with skeptical institutions. These hurdles unfairly burden business owners who already face limited resources. The research finds that progress cannot rest on specialized minority programs alone; the broader system must change. By making institutional …

Research On Building Sustainable Competitive Advantage Of Mutual Fund Management Companies In The Era Of Pan-Asset Management, Li Ren Nov 2025

Research On Building Sustainable Competitive Advantage Of Mutual Fund Management Companies In The Era Of Pan-Asset Management, Li Ren

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

In the context of China’s “big asset management” era, public mutual fund management companies face intensifying competition and an urgent need to build sustainable core competitiveness. Existing research has not clearly identified their key resources or explained how these resources interact with strategic management capabilities to generate competitive advantage. Drawing on the resource-based view and strategic management theory, this study develops a conceptual framework of core competitiveness for public mutual fund management companies. It proposes a three-dimensional resource classification system—valuable, rare, and inimitable resources—tailored to the mutual fund industry and incorporates strategic management capability as a mediating mechanism through which …

Domestic Inter-Sectorial Network Topological Evolution And Industrial Policy: A Comprehensive Network Analysis, Mahanad Ali Al Sabahi

Dissertations

While controversial, industrial policy propose a compelling argument for the government role in stimulating economic growth. The “new industrial policy” approach proposes a shift from a “Why” to “How” should industrial policy be implemented. Building upon this, in line with the increased utilization of network theory in economic research, this research examines network analysis as an econometric diagnostic tool asking, “How network analysis could be utilized in understanding the domestic economy and designing industrial policy?”. The study utilizes country input-output tables to calculate centrality measures corresponding to different connectivity concepts, and explore the dependency between domestic industries. The research demonstrated …

Pricing Strategies In Global Channels: Considering The Effects Of Parallel Trade, Yuan-Mao Kao, Yang Yang, Shih-Fen Cheng, Cheng-Hung Wu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Pricing a global product differently across multiple regions is a common but controversial practice. Although price differentiation helps capture unique market characteristics, it also encourages parallel trade, which may affect the overall corporate performance of a global company. We study this problem with a single global business unit (GBU) and multiple local business units (LBUs). The GBU manufactures a product and sets a transfer price for supplying the product to all LBUs, and LBUs decide retail prices for their respective regional markets. Customers can purchase products in any region by comparing LBUs’ prices and other parallel-imported factors, and we construct …

Interpersonal Capacity For Trustworthiness: A Reflective Framework For Navigating Entrustment, Roberto Angelo Moreira Vale Nov 2025

Interpersonal Capacity For Trustworthiness: A Reflective Framework For Navigating Entrustment, Roberto Angelo Moreira Vale

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

This dissertation advances understanding of how trust shapes salient cross-cultural encounters, drawing on a constructivist grounded theory analysis of 220 interview accounts. Across these narratives, trust-related dynamics consistently appeared alongside 16 other contextual, interpersonal, and intrapersonal factors. Notably, these dynamics were identified in interviews with participants from all GLOBE cultural clusters, suggesting a degree of cross-cultural breadth that warrants further empirical testing. Together, these patterns indicate that it is not cultural difference alone that makes an encounter meaningful, but how individuals interpret and respond to the possibility or risk of entrusting and being entrusted. Salience emerged at moments when participants …

This paper presents calculations related to the CSRD scope criteria which are modified through the Omnibus I Simplification Package. We show how many companies would be in scope of CSRD when considering the criteria suggested by (a) the Commission’s Omnibus proposal, (b) the position adopted by the Council of the EU, and (c) the European Peoples Party (EPP) proposal in the European Parliament. For each of these three “cases” we show the impact of lowering or increasing the employee-related threshold. 1.    Our calculations demonstrate that the number of in-scope companies varies significantly when modifying the employee threshold. We conclude from …

Do Underserved And Underrepresented Minorities Pay A Higher Premium For Employer-Sponsored Coverage?, Willie Reddic, Susan Albring, Patricia Crawford

The Lender Center for Social Justice

Employer-sponsored health insurance covers millions of Americans under 65, yet not all employees share the financial burden equally. This brief explores how underserved communities particularly Black, Hispanic, and American Indian/Alaska Native employees often pay a disproportionately high share of their income toward family coverage premiums. Drawing on national data and recent research, the study highlights systemic disparities in healthcare costs and access, that shows economic, social, and policy factors intersect to create uneven burdens. The importance of clear communication, tailored support tools, and equitable plan design to help employees make informed choices, while offering practical strategies for employers and entrepreneurs …

Ceo-Board Political Alignment And Firm Performance: An Examination Of Declines From Homogeneity That Are Mitigated By Ceo Psychological Traits, James Grabowski, Christina Robichaud, David B. Wangrow Nov 2025

Ceo-Board Political Alignment And Firm Performance: An Examination Of Declines From Homogeneity That Are Mitigated By Ceo Psychological Traits, James Grabowski, Christina Robichaud, David B. Wangrow

Management Faculty Research and Publications

As people group themselves by their political ideologies, ideological alignment is likely to occur in workgroups—including boards of directors. While some research highlights positive outcomes from shared group characteristics, homogeneity can also hinder decision-making due to fewer perspectives being considered, limited sharing of non-conforming information, and narrowed problem solving. Building from prior research, we contend that substantial political alignment between a CEO and board members aligns them toward a common cognition, which fosters negative effects associated with homogeneity and subsequently reduces firm performance. We further contend that these performance reductions can be mitigated by psychological traits associated with managerial discretion. …

How Behavioral Science Can Improve The Return On Ai Investments, David De Cremer, Shane Schweitzer, Jack Mcguire, Devesh Narayanan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Many AI projects fail because leaders treat adoption as a tech purchase instead of a behavioral change problem. People resist tools that disrupt routines, overreact to visible AI errors, and prefer familiar human judgment. As a result, even good systems fail to gain purchase. Leaders can address this problem by applying “Behavioral Human-Centered AI” across the AI adoption cycle. In the design phrase, companies should co-design with diverse users, add purposeful friction where it improves scrutiny, require beta tests with subgroup results and behavioral input. During adoption, they should frame AI as an augmenter, disclose limits and safeguards, use explainability …

Asymmetric Relationship Between Competition And Innovation: Evidence From Banks In The Eurozone, Kenny Tee, Konstantinos Syriopoulos, Ghulame Rubbaniy, Amna Salim Nov 2025

Asymmetric Relationship Between Competition And Innovation: Evidence From Banks In The Eurozone, Kenny Tee, Konstantinos Syriopoulos, Ghulame Rubbaniy, Amna Salim

All Works

This study examines the asymmetric relationship between competition and innovation in Eurozone banking, using data from the original 11 Economic and Monetary Union member states. Employing the technology gap ratio for innovation and the Lerner index and Boone indicator for competition, we find an inverted-U pattern: innovation initially rises with competition but declines beyond a threshold. Granger causality tests confirm bidirectional causality on the upward slope but none on the downward, highlighting nonlinearity. These findings suggest that moderate competition fosters innovation, while excessive rivalry stifles it. Policymakers should balance competition to maximize innovation without undermining long-term technological progress.

Technology Discontinuance: A Systematic Literature Review And Research Agenda, Birgit Altrichter, Sabine Benoit Nov 2025

Technology Discontinuance: A Systematic Literature Review And Research Agenda, Birgit Altrichter, Sabine Benoit

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Technology discontinuance by users who quit digital services such as social media or lose interest in their devices after a few weeks is a common phenomenon. Yet it has received little research attention; the few studies that address it are scattered across disciplines. Research into customer churn is more prevalent, but it implies switching providers rather than halting usage altogether. By moving beyond discipline-based knowledge boundaries and conducting a systematic literature review, the current article proposes a technology discontinuance framework, which details seven technology discontinuance types (overuse, overload, proficiency, disenchantment, social, circumstantial, and solution) and their drivers. For example, guilt …

Is it advantageous to make the first offer and to do so ambitiously? Although initial studies suggested clear advantages across cultures and contexts, recent findings have challenged the robustness of this first-mover advantage. A preregistered meta-analysis of 374 effects from 90 studies (Study 1; N = 16,334) revealed three beneficial effects of making the first offer: (a) a general first-mover advantage (g = 0.42, m = 80), (b) a positive correlation between first-offer magnitude and agreement value (r = 0.62, g = 1.56, m = 53), and (c) an advantage of ambitious (vs. moderate) first offers on agreement value (g …

Managing the performance of intralogistics operations, that is logistics operations within facilities such as manufacturing plants, order fulfillment warehouses, ports and terminals, and retail stores, is critical in fulfilling customer expectations. Traditional decision-making for intralogistics operations is based on historical data, typically collected over long-range intervals with significant processing delays. However, nowadays, Internet of Things (IoT) applications are used to gather detailed real-time data to make dynamic decisions. These new data sources provide challenges and opportunities for operations management. We provide an overview of prominent IoT technologies in four domains: manufacturing, warehousing, ports and terminals, retail, and other emerging areas. …

Managing The Personalization Paradox: Lessons From Spotify’S Ai Dj, Anirban Mukherjee, Hannah H. Chang, Jonathan Wibowo

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This case study uses Spotify’s AI DJ to examine the “personalization paradox,” where product features designed to deepen user connection can instead cause alienation. An analysis of over 1,400 user comments identifies three core frictions: a perceived loss of user agency, mismanaged expectations for the human-like AI, and a scalability bottleneck that led to repetitive content. Students are placed in the role of a product manager tasked with developing a prioritized roadmap to address these issues, forcing them to grapple with the critical trade-offs between technological capability and user psychology.

Foreign Director Exit In The Midst Of Deteriorating Bilateral Political Relations, Xiaocong Tian, Yuehua Xu, Daphne W. Yiu

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Amid global geopolitical realism pushing for a race of hegemonic rivalry nowadays, an outflow of global human talents is a pressing organizational concern. Our study draws attention to the underexamined phenomenon of the exit of foreign directors from their host countries during geopolitical tensions. Theorizing from a sensemaking logic, we posit that the deterioration of bilateral political relations serves as an unexpected event that activates foreign directors’ schemas for dual identity conflict, propelling them to react behaviorally to such identity threats by exiting the board in the host country. In addition, we further posit that the sensemaking process is contingent …
