Scaling Sustainable Fashion: Consumer And Operational Insights From Human Collective, Pedro Zeballos
Scaling Sustainable Fashion: Consumer And Operational Insights From Human Collective, Pedro Zeballos
Business ETD Collections
This study investigates the factors influencing consumers’ intention to purchase sustainable fashion, with particular focus on the persistent attitude-behaviour gap between consumers’ stated commitment to sustainability and their actual purchasing behaviour. The research examines key demand-side factors, including attitudes towards sustainable fashion, willingness to pay, price sensitivity, and trust in sustainable fashion brands, alongside supply-side and operational factors that may influence consumers’ ability to make sustainable purchasing decisions. A mixed-methods approach is adopted, combining survey data from consumers with an interview with a staff member from Human Collective. The study aims to identify the main barriers and drivers affecting sustainable …
The Impact Of Brand Awareness On Customer Perceptions And Purchasing Decisions At Small Chinese Takeaway Restaurants In Ireland, Jiajia Wang
Business ETD Collections
This study examines how brand awareness influences customer perception and purchasing decisions, and explores the branding challenges faced by small Chinese takeaway businesses in Ireland. A mixed-methods approach was used, combining 57 customer questionnaires with three semi-structured interviews with takeaway business owners.
The findings show that brand awareness influences customer purchasing behavior, as customers are more likely to choose familiar takeaway brands. However, its impact on customer perception, particularly perceived value and willingness to pay, is limited. Customers place greater importance on practical factors such as price, food quality, and service.
The study also identifies key branding challenges for small …

Reliance Retail (Ajio): Digital Payment Trust, Perceived Cybersecurity, And Indian Consumers’ Intention To Shop Cross-Border Online, Mohammed Amer Ahmed
Business ETD Collections
This study examines how digital payment trust and perceived cybersecurity influence Indian consumers’ intention to shop cross-border online through Reliance Retail’s AJIO. The research used a quantitative cross-sectional survey of 59 Indian adults with online shopping experience. Data were analysed in SPSS using descriptive statistics, reliability testing, Spearman’s rank correlation and supplementary linear regression. The data analysis showed that trust in digital payments was the most influential of all factors on cross border purchase intentions. In addition to being positively associated with purchase intentions (and the only factor positively associated with purchase intentions), trust in digital payments is also the …

Employee engagement is one of the key determinants of organisational performance, especially in labour-intensive industries, such as grocery retail. This paper will focus on how leadership communication contributes to the creation of employee engagement in SuperValu Talbot Street, Dublin. The study uses the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) model and social exchange theory to examine the roles of communication practices and their use as a significant resource in employee motivation and workplace experience. The qualitative case study approach was embraced where semi-structured interviews were carried out with four managers and seven frontline employees. The results indicate that the clarity of communication, feedback …
Trust And Social Licence Challenges In Oyu Tolgoi’S Engagement With Local Communities In Mongolia, Anudari Enkhbayar
Trust And Social Licence Challenges In Oyu Tolgoi’S Engagement With Local Communities In Mongolia, Anudari Enkhbayar
Business ETD Collections
This dissertation explores trust and stakeholder engagement in the case of the Oyu Tolgoi Mine in Mongolia. It focuses on the relationship between the mine and local communities, especially in terms of trust, fairness and long-term social licence to operate. While mining can support economic growth, jobs and investment, it can also create environmental concerns, social tension and conflict when local communities feel ignored or unfairly treated.
The study asks two main questions: what factors have contributed to trust challenges between Oyu Tolgoi and local communities, and how stakeholder engagement can help strengthen long-term social licence to operate. The research …

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
Data-driven solutions and innovations have been extended to various industries, including agriculture, to increase efficiency. With the emergence of smart farming and agriculture 4.0, advanced technologies such as IoT, big data, machine learning, and cloud computing are increasingly integrated into farming. Among these, technologies such as digital models, digital twins and the metaverse are now used to control various farming activities remotely based on real-time data. However agricultural ecosystems, involving uncertain nature-based factors and complex human-nature interactions cannot always be accurately represented or predicted by digital models. Digital models aim to reduce natural environments into controllable game-like situations and undermine …
Do You Walk On By? The Effects Of Donor Fatigue On Willingness To Donate, Shawn Michael Henry
Do You Walk On By? The Effects Of Donor Fatigue On Willingness To Donate, Shawn Michael Henry
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Donation solicitation literature validates the successful usage of various solicitation tactics that lead to achieving set donation goals for their associated cause. Yet, while the financial success of “checkout charity” is well-documented, a significant gap remains regarding the impact of high-frequency solicitations on long-term consumer-brand relationship. This research addresses this gap. Over the span of three surveys, this study finds that donation request frequency overall erodes donation likelihood through donor fatigue when donation frequency changes (occasional vs. always). However, this relationship is moderated by the perceived consumer base, with a larger perceived consumer base exacerbating the “diffusion of responsibility.” Further, …

Back To The Office Or Out The Door: The Impact Of Return-To-Office Mandates On Employee Well-Being And Turnover Intention, Charlotte Renee Nelson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The widespread adoption of remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic significantly altered traditional workplace arrangements. As organizations increasingly implement RTO mandates, questions have emerged about how these changes affect employee well-being and turnover intentions. Guided by the Job Demands–Resources framework, this study examined the relationship between RTO mandates and two employee outcomes: employee well-being and turnover intention. The study also tested whether work engagement mediated these relationships and whether perceived organizational support and work stressors moderated the relationship between RTO mandates and work engagement.
A quantitative, non-experimental, cross-sectional survey design was employed. Data were collected from 229 U.S. employees working …

EVMS School of Health Professions Faculty Publications
Lifestyle intervention is critical for young adults with early-stage hypertension. A Western diet has negative effects on kidney function and blood pressure; however, time-of-day effects are understudied. We hypothesized that consumption of a Western-style meal that is misaligned with the endogenous circadian rhythm would have adverse effects on blood pressure, kidney function, and vascular function. Ten young adults with elevated blood pressure or stage 1 hypertension (means ± SD: 26 ± 8 yr, 50% female) underwent a randomized crossover, isocaloric controlled feeding intervention. Participants were allocated to receive a Western-style meal high in sodium, sugar, and saturated fat in the …

The Actor, The Character, And The Audience: The Impact Of Racial Alignment On Theater Audiences, Conwell Worthington Iii
Open Access Dissertations
Broadway represents the pinnacle of live theater in the USA, generating billions of dollars in revenue and serving as an international cultural icon. Despite Broadway’s prominence, it faces challenges stemming from its reliance on a relatively homogeneous audience base and a changing market. One determinant of both financial and critical success is casting. Casting also significantly impacts audience perceptions and acceptance. The recent success of Hamilton: An American Musical and Six: The Musical juxtaposed with the failure of 1776 have sparked discussion and interest into how to best utilize non-traditional casting as a strategy to broaden Broadway Audiences. This dissertation …

Attract Or Repel: Ceo Activism & Gen Z Pursuits, William Thomas Garrett
Open Access Dissertations
This study examines the effect of CEO sociopolitical activism on Gen Z job seekers by conceptualizing the former as an identity-implicating experience that poses either an identity opportunity or identity threat. As part of a 3 x 3 experimental study, participants reviewed comments about a proposed transgender bathroom bill made by the CEO of a fictional potential employer. The experiment introduced features of organizational policies governing internal discussions of political and social issues in the workplace and measured the ability of the policies to influence the potential applicant’s perception of an opportunity or threat. Results examined the relationship between the …

Gleason, Jenkins, and Johnson (2008) provide evidence that restatements lead to stock price declines among non-restating industry peer firms, suggesting that investors perceive contemporaneous manipulation within the industry. In contrast, Kedia, Koh, and Rajgopal (2015) find that restatements—especially less severe ones—encourage peer firms to initiate earnings manipulation. These divergent findings, together with the rising prevalence of less severe restatements and advances in monitoring technologies, motivate a re-examination of manipulation contagion. Although we are able to replicate the results of both seminal studies, we find that the results in Kedia, Koh, and Rajgopal (2015) are sensitive to design choices that affect …
Psychological Distance And Auditor Assessment Of The Severity Of An Internal Control Deficiency, Scott C. Jackson, John D. Keyser, Douglas F. Prawitt
Psychological Distance And Auditor Assessment Of The Severity Of An Internal Control Deficiency, Scott C. Jackson, John D. Keyser, Douglas F. Prawitt
Faculty Publications
Auditors often underestimate the severity of internal control deficiencies, particularly when associated misstatements are immaterial. We find that auditors are more likely to correctly classify a material weakness when no misstatement information is provided than when misstatement information is available, and that this finding may unconsciously arise from auditors’ construal level in judging control deficiency severity. Through a series of experiments, we manipulate misstatement information related to an internal control deficiency designed to represent a material weakness. We hold the size of potential misstatement constant and find that auditors and graduate auditing students are less likely to correctly assess the …

ABSTRACT
GREED, GUILT, AND GENERATIVE AI: EMOTIONAL DYNAMICS IN DIGITAL CONSUMER INTERACTIONS
Danielle Hass
Digital consumer interactions are increasingly shaped by complex emotional dynamics. As digital platforms and Generative AI (GenAI) technologies proliferate in our everyday lives, it is critical to understand the emotional undercurrents and how they impact consumer behavior. This dissertation investigates these dynamics through three essays that explore how emotions impact consumer experiences in digital spaces, with an overall goal to offer theoretical and practical insights into the interaction of human psychology and technological advancement in the consumer behavior field.
Essay One examines the paradox of pleasure …
Self-Leadership And Perceptions Of Artificial Intelligence: A Single-Case Study, Patrik Garren
Self-Leadership And Perceptions Of Artificial Intelligence: A Single-Case Study, Patrik Garren
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this single-case qualitative project is to uncover how self-leadership’s behavioral and cognitive strategies influence perceptions of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and AI adoption. While existing literature acknowledges that there is an association between self-leadership, technology’s perceived usefulness and ease of use, as well as comfort with AI preparedness and its professional impact, there is limited research on how self-leadership shapes perceptions of AI and AI adoption in real-life contexts. To fill this gap in contemporary literature, this project analyzes qualitative semi-structured interviews with 25 healthcare professionals involved in the implementation of ‘AI Model 1’ at their mid-sized United …
Trust, Literacy, And Choice: Exploring How Taxpayers Decide Between Self-Preparation And Professional Assistance, Bethany Jo Elam
Trust, Literacy, And Choice: Exploring How Taxpayers Decide Between Self-Preparation And Professional Assistance, Bethany Jo Elam
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Each year, taxpayers must decide whether to self-prepare their tax return or hire a tax professional. While the decline in paper filing has made electronic filing the standard, the ease of access to both DIY tax software and tax professionals allows taxpayers to switch between these options each year if they wish. While previous research has focused on tangible predictors such as cost and accuracy, psychological factors, such as trust, remain largely unexplored in the modern tax-filing environment. This study investigates the relationship among perceived tax literacy among taxpayers, various dimensions of trust, and the intention to use tax software. …
The Bleeding Edge Of Misogyny: How Gender-Based Harassment And Infrastructural Neglect Shape Menstrual Distress, Mackenzie J. Miller
The Bleeding Edge Of Misogyny: How Gender-Based Harassment And Infrastructural Neglect Shape Menstrual Distress, Mackenzie J. Miller
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Despite growing attention to menstrual health, organizational research has largely overlooked how workplace conditions shape menstrual experiences. Dominant perspectives frame menstruation as an individual issue that negatively affects work, neglecting how features of the work environment – such as gender-based harassment and access to menstrual-related infrastructure – contribute to menstrual distress. Addressing this gap, this dissertation adopts a bidirectional perspective, examining how social and material workplace conditions shape menstrual distress, defined as the extent to which menstrual symptoms interfere with daily functioning. Drawing on the transactional model of stress and objectification theory, I hypothesized that gender-based harassment would predict menstrual …
The Effect Of Innovative Value Proposition On Buyer Reactions: The Moderating Roles Of Price Orientation And Perceived Risk, Chad Stuttz
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Value propositions are essential to the success of personal selling in the Business-to-Business (B2B) context. While earlier studies have offered valuable insights into the roles of value propositions in driving B2B sales, they have often regarded value propositions as uniform. In this dissertation, I argue that value propositions vary in their levels of innovativeness. The dissertation introduces the concept of innovative value proposition (IVP) and proposes that IVP indicates greater future growth potential to buyers, leading to more favorable reactions such as responsiveness and willingness to engage than less innovative ones. Additionally, the dissertation explores the moderating effects of buyer …

Survival In The Stigmatized Industry (Bitcoin Atm), Brooks Mcadam
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
ii ABSTRACT Survival in the Stigmatized Industry (Bitcoin ATM) Brooks McAdam This paper examines how companies can survive in a stigmatized industry where the same message may attract customers while simultaneously generating skepticism. The study posed the following research question using the Bitcoin ATM industry as the context: Does the message presented on company websites influence the degree of exit risk in a market characterized by moral concerns, exposure to fraud, and unstable regulation? The answer is clear. Messaging is important; however, not every message is equally important. Fee-related messaging emerged as the most consistent predictor of exit risk. Messaging …
Exploring The Determinants And The Effects Of Crypto Assets, Qiu Zheng
Exploring The Determinants And The Effects Of Crypto Assets, Qiu Zheng
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation consists of three studies that primarily delve into the factors influencing and outcomes of firms’ crypto assets. The first paper examines the association between corporate crypto assets and firms’ credit ratings. Using a large sample of U.S. public firms, we find that firms holding crypto assets receive significantly better future credit ratings, particularly when their activities are related to crypto mining, which generates relatively stable cash flows. However, crypto exposure also increases disagreement among credit rating agencies, reflecting the uncertainty associated with evaluating crypto-related risks. This effect is more pronounced when firms operate in less transparent information environments …

Upper Echelons And Corporate Venture Capital: Ceo Effects On Investment Direction And Resource Deployment, Ralph Judicael Mompoint
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study examines how founder-CEO status shapes the strategic orientation of corporate venture capital (CVC) activity. Drawing on upper echelons theory, I argue that founder-CEOs differ from non-founder CEOs in where they direct CVC investments, not simply in whether they engage in CVC at all. Using a panel of S&P 500 firms spanning 2004 through 2024, I test whether founder-CEOs pursue greater CVC activity overall and whether they concentrate that activity in ventures operating within the firm's core industry. Results from random-effects negative binomial regression models show that founder-CEO status is positively associated with core-industry CVC but not with investments …
Government Financial Statements: The Influence Of Audit Opinion Type On Attitudes Toward Taxation, Stephanie Ann Vonfintel
Government Financial Statements: The Influence Of Audit Opinion Type On Attitudes Toward Taxation, Stephanie Ann Vonfintel
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The United States government has a responsibility to American citizens to be a good financial steward of their tax dollars. The inability to fulfill this responsibility is evidenced by 28 consecutive years of audit failures, whereby the Government Accountability Office has been unable to issue an opinion on the United States government’s annual financial statements. An experiment varying audit opinion type is used to evaluate whether the United States government failing (or passing) its annual financial statement audits influences attitudes toward federal taxation. Findings show support for federal taxation is strongest when citizens are told that the United States government …

Research has long recognized that institutional investors possess significant information processing advantages. Yet even these investors face limited attention constraints, implying that periods of distraction may attenuate their advantage. We examine the effects of a plausibly exogenous shock to institutional attention arising from the annual buy-side focused Equity Research and Valuation (ERV) conference for Chartered Financial Analysts on institutions’ information processing. Validation tests using conference call data indicate that fewer buy-side analysts are present on calls during ERV conferences and that questions are shorter, consistent with the presence of substitute or backup analysts. In our main analyses, we find that …

Taxpayers Willingness To Use Ai Conversational Tools, Nessrine Mesto-Assaad
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
With the rapid emergence of Artificial Intelligence Conversational Tools (AICTs), such as ChatGPT and Google Gemini, and their widespread use, the need to understand users’ acceptance of this emerging technology has increased. Prior research has investigated users’ acceptance of AICTs in hospitality, tourism, e-commerce, and retail industries. However, users’ acceptance of the use of AICTs for tax information remains relatively underexplored in the tax context. Therefore, this study investigates taxpayers’ willingness to accept and use AICTs for tax-related questions when e-filing their tax returns. Drawing on the Artificial Intelligence Device Use and Acceptance (AIDUA) model as a research framework, this …
Essays On Stock Market Expectations And Financial Decisions, Shanxiang Yang
Essays On Stock Market Expectations And Financial Decisions, Shanxiang Yang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation consists of three essays on stock market expectations and financial decisions. The first essay shows significant racial differences in expectations regarding future stock market performance. Using data from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s Survey of Consumer Expectations from 2013 to 2022, we find that, relative to White Americans, Black and Hispanic Americans have lower probabilistic expectations that the stock market will increase. This racial gap in expectations was even larger during the recession caused by the Covid-19 epidemic, suggesting that economic uncertainty exacerbates this heterogeneity in expectations. Furthermore, we show that relative to White Americans, the …
Ai-Assisted Task Completion: Consumer Sentiments By Effort Level, Jason Mickey Martin
Ai-Assisted Task Completion: Consumer Sentiments By Effort Level, Jason Mickey Martin
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study examines consumer anger in reaction to firms’ use of artificial intelligence (AI) to assist them in the completion of tasks. Specifically, we focus on instances when AI supplements rather than replaces human effort. Using cognitive appraisal theory and psychological contract constructs, this research investigates how the amount of effort consumers invest into a service review and the effort reciprocated by firms influences emotional reactions. Across two studies, using scenario-based experiments, we find that consumers report higher levels of anger when AI is used to aid in responding to high-effort reviews compared to low-effort reviews. The results suggest that …
Three Essays On Option Markets, Fangzheng Ou
Three Essays On Option Markets, Fangzheng Ou
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation includes three essays examining index option and stock option markets. The first essay investigates the pricing kernel puzzle by examining S&P 500 index option returns and empirical pricing kernels across expiration dates ranging from one month to one year. We document that at short maturities, out-of-the-money call option returns are negative and decrease with the strike price, while at long maturities, at least some are positive and increase with the strike price. Empirical pricing kernels predominantly exhibit a W-shape at short maturities, with this pattern becoming less pronounced and evolving toward a monotonically decreasing curve at longer maturities. …

A New Functional Setting For Term Structure Modeling Using The Health-Jarrow-Morton Framework, Michael Pokojovy, Ebenezer Nkum, Thomas M. Fullerton Jr.
Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications
The well-known Heath–Jarrow–Morton (HJM) framework provides a universal and efficacious instrument for modeling the stochastic evolution of an entire yield curve by explaining the interest rate dynamics in continuous time under no-arbitrage conditions. Existing implementations involve exponentially weighted function spaces as theoretical settings for the former stochastic evolution. While the choice of weight can have a drastic effect on model calibration and subsequent forecasting, it cannot be estimated from market data and does not allow for any objective interpretation. The proposed approach does not have this shortcoming as it adopts a suitably designed unweighted function space. The HJM equation is …

This research assesses the characteristics of today’s Africa–China relations using dependency theory, world systems theory, neocolonialism, and South-South cooperation, using comparisons between historical African dependence on European colonial powers and recent reliance on China in terms of trade, infrastructure, debt, and technology. This research identifies how contemporary cooperations either continue previous patterns of economic and political subordination or create a transformation of those relationships or provide a challenge to them. Using qualitative comparative historical analysis, along with specific case studies and secondary sources (academic journals, speeches, government publications, etc.), the research demonstrates that while Africa-China relations exhibit fewer structural features …
