Operational Variations In State-Owned Hotels And International Branded Hotels In China: A Qualitative Analysis Of Practitioners' Perspectives And Implications, Wen Wei
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study examines experienced hoteliers' perspectives on essential operational practices for delivering consistent, high-quality customer experiences, focusing on operational differences between Chinese State-Owned Hotels (SOHs) and International Branded Hotels (IBHs) in China. Through semi-structured interviews with 24 experienced hoteliers from SOHs and IBHs, the research identifies operational practices in IBHs that are perceived as more effective than those in SOHs. Additionally, the study explores operational practices that SOHs and IBHs could adopt and adapt to succeed in China’s post-pandemic hotel market. The analysis is framed by the Resource-Based View (RBV), Dynamic Capabilities (DCs), Market Orientation (MO), and the role of …

The Late President Dr. Kenneth Kaunda’S Influence On Wildlife Conservation And Tourism In South Luangwa National Park Of Zambia, Chikondi Banda-Thole, Thomas Kweku Taylor, Thor Larsen
Zambia Social Science Journal
Wildlife in Zambia’s Luangwa Valley has fascinated tourists from the pre-colonial era to date. Writings on the prolific beauty of the region describe the abundance of species and beautiful scenery of the valley. The late President Dr. Kenneth Kaunda declared South Luangwa a National Park in 1971. He further facilitated the Luangwa Integrated Rural Development Project (LIRDP) funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD) to support the management of the Park and engage local communities in conservation efforts and livelihood development. The South Luangwa National Park and adjacent Game Management Areas were Dr. Kaunda’s preferred destination for work …

Understanding The Relationship Between Festival Making Practices And Place : An Investigation Into The Making Of Two Community Arts Festivals In Ireland, Danielle Lynch
Doctoral
Although the importance of arts festivals for places is acknowledged in the literature, there is surprisingly limited understanding of festival making as creative practice, and the manner and extent to which place influences this practice. In recent decades, the global proliferation of art festivals has not been met with a commensurate increase in scholarly or critical examinations regarding their form, function, or content (Merrington, 2016). Indeed, existing studies largely focus on the events themselves and their aftermath rather than the processes underpinning their formation and making (Mair & Smith, 2022). This qualitative study addresses this gap and investigates the dialogical …
Harmony In Collaboration: Curating Sustainability In Post-Pandemic Arts, Natalie M. Stepaniak
Harmony In Collaboration: Curating Sustainability In Post-Pandemic Arts, Natalie M. Stepaniak
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In an interconnected world, collaboration in the arts is rising, challenging the traditional notion of the solitary artist. Interdisciplinary collaboration is crucial for advancing performing and visual arts, especially amidst declining audience attendance. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbating challenges for the arts sector, recent data suggests a gradual recovery, with collaborative efforts fostering resilience.
This dissertation investigates the transformative potential of interdisciplinary collaboration from the perspective of musicians and their organizations. Through three case studies—collaborations between the Rapides Symphony Orchestra and Play On Theater Company, The Next Festival for Emerging Artists, and violist-composer Leilehua Lanzilotti and her collaborative relationship with …

The Blessed Assembly: Irreplaceable Physical Co-Presence In Worship And Healthy Hybridity Reimagined After The Pandemic In The Digital Age, Yvette, Ying Wai Lau
Doctor of Pastoral Music Projects and Theses
Because of the unprecedented and unexpected force of the pandemic since 2020, most churches around the world have experienced some online worship during the lockdown of their cities or the mandated closure of the church buildings. For many people, online worship seems to be an equivalent, if not better, alternative for gathering together—a physical co-presence in worship—even after the pandemic has ended. As necessary and vital as online worship experiences have been for Christians during the pandemic, the witness of the church from Pentecost throughout Christian history indicates that gathered worship in physical spaces is irreplaceable for faith formation and …
Instructor's Manual: Where's My Compass?, Steven Sparling
Instructor's Manual: Where's My Compass?, Steven Sparling
Journal of Arts Entrepreneurship Education
The performing arts is a perennially over-subscribed market with more performers than available jobs. The COVID-19 pandemic brought a previously constrained market to a standstill. For many students graduating from musical theatre and acting programs the lack of employment opportunities in performance was discouraging. The attached case studies examine the experience of three graduates and how they used skills adjacent to their performing skills to launch small business ventures. This Instructor’s Manual uses SWOT Analysis and the Ansoff Matrix as tools to assist students in analyzing the case studies (and as planning tools for their own entrepreneurial ventures). It also …
Where's My Compass? Navigating Uncertainty With Business Planning Tools For Performing Arts Graduates - A Teaching Case Study, Steven Sparling
Where's My Compass? Navigating Uncertainty With Business Planning Tools For Performing Arts Graduates - A Teaching Case Study, Steven Sparling
Journal of Arts Entrepreneurship Education
This teaching case study looks at the phenomenon of musical theatre students graduating in spring 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic shut down both their graduation showcase opportunities and the majority of the audition and work opportunities that would normally be available to graduate performers. In both cases presented, the actors set up small businesses-- in bookkeeping and video production, respectively-- that allowed them to generate income to keep themselves afloat while preserving their primary identity as artists despite challenging market conditions. The accompanying Instructor's Manual uses SWOT Analysis and the Ansoff Matrix as tools to assist students in analyzing the …

Assessing Smart Nation Singapore As An International Model For Ai Responsibility, Philip L. Frana
International Journal on Responsibility
While AI and other smart technologies greatly contribute to material aspects of well-being, there are concerns that they threaten quality of life in Singapore. Smart technologies and digital governance have freed up labor for activities where human empathy and understanding are unique and indispensable, but also threaten to undermine human dignity and accountability. This paper undertakes a comprehensive assessment of Singapore as an international model for AI responsibility from the perspective of the history and philosophy of technological governance. It examines the evolution of regulatory frameworks, ethical considerations, and key legal documents and social initiatives shaping the nation’s approach to …
The Entrepreneur’S Burden: Investigating The Interplay Between Impostorism And Entrepreneurial Identity, Megan Laura Weber
The Entrepreneur’S Burden: Investigating The Interplay Between Impostorism And Entrepreneurial Identity, Megan Laura Weber
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Entrepreneurship is often portrayed as a glamorous pursuit of success but conceals a darker side, exacerbated by impostorism, characterized by challenges, identity conflicts, and diminished well-being. This "dark side" of entrepreneurship is seldom explored due to our collective fascination with the central figure of the entrepreneur. Impostorism is a prevalent phenomenon among individuals who perceive that their role is beyond their capabilities and fear being exposed as a "fake." Impostorism can have negative consequences, including self-sabotage, missed opportunities, and difficulty in seeking help or support, which can impact the ability of entrepreneurs to take entrepreneurial action and experience well-being.

Comedy Tonight? Maximizing Theatre Audiences Using A Game Theory Model, Emma Lavaune Johnson
Comedy Tonight? Maximizing Theatre Audiences Using A Game Theory Model, Emma Lavaune Johnson
Quantitative Social Science Undergraduate Senior Theses
Existing theatre industry literature is comprised of several arguments regarding the amount of literature on the theatre industry. Several scholars argue that the theatre industry is not extensively studied in economics due to misconceptions about the profitability of theatre, the misalignment between artists’ actions and economic “rationality,” and the contributions of the arts industries to the broader U.S. economy. Beyond this academic debate, economic research on the theatre industry explores the nuances of theatre demand and the influence of audience preferences and demographics on theatre ticket demand.
This paper presents a game-theoretic model to study the strategic season selection decisions …
Call And Response : Experiments In Storytelling, Deanne Fernandes
Call And Response : Experiments In Storytelling, Deanne Fernandes
Masters Theses
Being part of RISD's inaugural Masters of Illustration cohort has been an immense honor. This journey has been nothing short of transformative and healing, as it has allowed me to unearth layers of self-discovery through my creative practice.
In my thesis, I introduce a fresh research methodology rooted in the principles of call and response, with adaptability, creativity, and storytelling as its foundational pillars. Through the lenses of visual storytelling, experimental animation, graphic journalism, and fictional world-building, I demonstrate how these techniques can effectively bridge the gap between theory and practice. This dynamic approach fosters meaningful connections among diverse perspectives …
Fluid Futures: The Revitalization Of Yangzhou Through Its Historical Waterways, Feiyang Wu
Fluid Futures: The Revitalization Of Yangzhou Through Its Historical Waterways, Feiyang Wu
Masters Theses
In China, cities such as Yangzhou, which in pre-modern times played central roles in the political, cultural, and economic functioning of the country based on their geographic location, proximity to water-based trade routes, and connections to the imperial court, are today facing uncertain futures due to waterways no longer being critical to trade, and government-driven development being focused on first-tier cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Guangzhou. With this, the working-age population migrates from smaller cities toward these urban giants, leaving behind aging relatives, a less robust and diversified economic base, and few attributes other than cultural tourism that …
Between Memory And History: Irish Pubs As Sites Of Memory And Invention, Perry Share, Moonyoung Hong
Between Memory And History: Irish Pubs As Sites Of Memory And Invention, Perry Share, Moonyoung Hong
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
The pub has been at the centre of Irish culture and identity for at least two centuries, has become a pillar of the Irish tourism “product,” and an export commodity as thousands of themed “Irish pubs” have been established across the world in the last number of decades, supplementing existing establishments that have served the global Irish community. This paper draws on key themes from the diverse material in our upcoming academic volume on the Irish pub, to be published by Cork University Press, later in 2024. The book brings together contributions from scholars of history, sociology, design, literature, culinary …

Validating A 3d-Printed Endovascular Simulator For Use In Training Surgical Residents, Paarth Jain, Jeremy Zack, Lauren Schlegel, Eva Varotsis, Robert S. Pugliese, Michael Nooromid, Babak Abai
Department of Surgery Faculty Papers
Objective: Three-dimensional (3D)-printed endovascular models can be an accessible alternative to expensive, state-of-the-art endovascular simulators but currently lack the rigorous validation needed to be dependable educational tools. This study describes the manufacture of a 3D-printed endovascular model of an aorta and determines the construct validity and preliminary content and face validity of the model. Methods: A 3D-printed aorta was created using segmented data from a patient computerized tomography scan and a FormLabs 3B 3D printer with FormLabs Clear resin. Participants were asked to perform two tasks from a femoral access point: catheterize the contralateral common iliac artery and the superior …
Beneath The Mask: The Performance Of Blackness And Economies Of Caricature In American Fiction, Terri Bowles
Beneath The Mask: The Performance Of Blackness And Economies Of Caricature In American Fiction, Terri Bowles
Markets, Globalization & Development Review
In American Fiction (2023), written for the screen and directed by Cord Jefferson, satire, drama and comedy frame a knife-sharp examination of America’s cultural reproductions of stereotype and caricature. The film, based on Percival Everett’s novel Erasure, explores the fraught professional position of Thelonious “Monk” Ellison (Jeffrey Wright), a professor-author pressed to write a bestseller amid family upheaval and financial strain. Monk’s resulting novel, a gritty send-up of urban tropism drafted in a fit of fury and frustration, exploits America’s fixation on commodifying and flattening Blackness—and becomes an instant hit. This review explores the film’s interrogations of race, class and …
Can Marketing Transcend Entrenched Gender Biases?, Thinh Nguyen
Can Marketing Transcend Entrenched Gender Biases?, Thinh Nguyen
Markets, Globalization & Development Review
Through a feminist lens, Maclaran and Chatzidakis (2022) challenge conventional assumptions about gender, emphasizing its performative nature shaped by social practices rather than inherent traits. This commentary extends analyses of key themes such as gender performativity, the male gaze, and subject-object binaries within marketing. It critiques how marketing strategies reinforce existing power imbalances and systemic biases rooted in historical narratives. The writing also reflects on media interpretations of gender issues through films like 'Turning Red' and 'Barbie'. By contextualizing gendered marketing within broader societal frameworks, this writing contributes to ongoing dialogues in media studies, sociology, and gender studies, highlighting the …
