For the first time an official body uttered words that did damage to the term “student athlete.” About a week ago a ruling by the National Labor Relations Board defined a football player as an employee of a university. Football players, it concluded, are not primarily students.

Nfl Fans Response To Social Media Posts, Laura Fien
Sport Management Undergraduate
Social media has become a growing phenomenon in the 21st century, as a result sport teams can now interact and engage fans in more personalized ways. However, because social media is so new there is very little research that helps determine how fans interact with teams through social media. This study was conducted using focus groups and has determined that even though relationship marketing is a good idea, NFL fans prefer information posted to Facebook and Twitter to be convenient and informative in relationship to the team’s on field performance. Furthermore, the more convenient and informative the information posted is …

The Nfl’S Highly And Lowly Identified Fans: Who Are They?, Daniel Cusato
Sport Management Undergraduate
While there is a plethora of literature on fan identification, specifically high or lowly identified fans, there is no literature on who these highly and lowly identified fans actually are. The goal of this research paper is to fill the void in that section of NFL fan literature and discover what demographics of fans are the most highly and lowly identified. In order to find out who is a highly or lowly identified fan, a survey must be administered that will effectively test the characteristics of each participant. This will make the respondents classifiable as either a highly or lowly …

In athletics every athlete prefers different behaviors from their coach. Research hasn’t been able to explain player preferences in terms of their preferred and expected coaching behaviors and if their coaches are meeting those behaviors. This study looked to see if coaches met the expected and preferred behaviors of their athletes. In order to examine this question, St. John Fisher student athletes of both genders, and individual sport and team sport athletes were be surveyed. How Fantasy Sport Participation Affects Fan Loyalty, Michael Flanigan
Sport Management Undergraduate
Fantasy sports have recently emerged as a popular form of sport consumption. Previous research has investigated the concept of fantasy sport involvement and fans loyally, however little research exists on the effects these variables have on each other. The focus of this research is to identify the effects fantasy sport participation has on fan loyalty and consumption. A survey collected primary data which went through a Pearson correlation. It was found that fantasy sport participation increased consumption of the sport product. It was also found that fantasy sport participants are more loyal to their favorite team than their fantasy teams.

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Student Advertising Projects
For the Spring of 2014 UNL CoJMC ADPR capstone course, Advertising and Public Relations Campaigns, the Lincoln Saltdogs approached our Campaigns class in developing a strategic campaign for Lincoln’s only professional baseball team. Brett Beer, the Director of Marketing for the Saltdogs, along with his associates, provided us with one objective in developing a full campaign strategy. Mr. Beer wanted us to “get butts in seats.” Our team, Bullpen, conducted both secondary and primary research, developed a core media mix and strategies, and incorporated strategic creative tactics that would get more “butts in seats” in portraying Saltdog baseball games as …

The Experience Of Former Women Officials And The Impact On The Sporting Community, Jacob K. Tingle, Stacy Warner, Melanie L. Sartore-Baldwin
School of Business Faculty Research
In an effort to explore the shortage of female sport officials, the authors examined the experience of eight former female basketball officials from five geographically diverse states in the U.S. who voluntarily left the role. Specifically, the authors asked former female basketball officials to describe their workplace experiences. Utilizing a phenomenological approach and workplace incivility framework, the results indicated that the felt social inequity for female officials detracted from the participants experiencing a sense of community in the workplace, which ultimately led to their discontinuation in the role. Results indicate four key factors that created this uncivil work environment. An …

New Media And The Nfl Fan: Determining The Impact Of New Media On Team Identification In Displaced Nfl Fans, Dorothy R. Collins
Human Movement Studies & Special Education Theses & Dissertations
Sports team identification, when viewed through the lens of social identity theory (Tajfel, 1978), can be seen as a powerful means of maintaining one's sense of self and feelings of belonging as part of a group. In some cases, team identification has been found to be based on one's feelings of connection with the geographic location of that team (Uhlman & Trail, 2012). Furthermore, prior research has shown that bonds of team identification forged in one's youth are particularly strong (James, 2001). The surge of new media options that have appeared in the last decade are changing the way in …

The number of female athletic trainers is growing fast but there is a small amount present in male professional sports. This research looked at why there is a lack of female athletic trainers in male professional sports using the topics of harassment, discrimination and work-life balance as three reasons why this might be. The methodology for this research consisted of sending out surveys to female athletic trainers at the professional and collegiate level. Qualitative data was collected to find …

Sitting in the middle of March Madness it is easy to forget that this annual orgy of basketball and money is a relatively new phenomenon. It was the transformation of television with the arrival of cable and all-sports networks that turned the NCAA basketball championship into a national obsession. Whereas in 1960 it was impossible to see the NCAA finals on television outside the major markets, it is now possible to see every game in the six weeks of games involving 68 teams in every market. And if you can’t see it on television you can see it on any …

The organization was evaluated based on an instrument created by the researcher to examine the Vancouver Organizing Committee’s financial risk management plan. With the Winter Olympics finally under way, is it possible that the American journalists, if we can use that term in these circumstances, will be able to write about something other than the failure of Russia to be the United States? Having traveled to Russia multiple times since the collapse of the Soviet Union, I have witnessed the remarkable transformation of this society. Caught in a time warp created by the failure of the Soviet Union, the standard of living of the average Russian trailed behind that of most of Western Europe and the United States. The Soviet Union was …

Super Bowl, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
Here we are once again at the most important weekend in American sport. The Super Bowl is Sunday and that means that Americans across the land will create scenes reminiscent of Thorstein Veblen’s classic, The Theory of the Leisure Class. Veblen’s original vocabulary describing the rich of the late 19th century is as appropriate now as it was then. Such phrases as “conspicuous consumption,” “conspicuous waste” and “conspicuous leisure,” seem to have been coined for the Super Bowl.

ESPN, the Worldwide Breeder of ludicrous sports programming, reached a new low this week. The Network that brought you the biggest non-event on the annual sports calendar, the NFL draft, and then took it down another notch by televising the announcement of the NFL schedule, outdid itself once again by having a countdown to the unveiling of Mel Kiper’s mock draft. Did anyone care? Is Mel anything more than a parody of himself? Has ESPN totally lost its way? (The correct answers are no, no, and maybe.)

The Impact Of New, Renewal And Termination Sponsorship Announcements On Share Price Returns, T. S. Kruger, Michael M. Goldman, M. Ward
Sport Management
What impact do sport sponsorship announcements have on the share price returns of the sponsoring firms? The purpose of this research is to examine the impact of new, renewal and termination sponsorship announcements on share price returns. The research employed the widely acceptable event study methodology to analyse 118 announcements made by 19 firms over a period of more than 11 years. The mixed findings across all three announcement types point to the lack of consideration given to the sponsorship investment by investors. The findings suggest that, although some firms may position their sponsorships as a contributor towards competitive advantage, …
