Pancho's Racket And The Long Road To Professional Tennis, Gregory I. Ruth Jan 2017

Pancho's Racket And The Long Road To Professional Tennis, Gregory I. Ruth

Dissertations

Historians have written little on sports in the United States compared to other topics. They have had even less to say about tennis than other popular sports in large part because the original research necessary to complete a full treatment of the history of the game appeared too daunting to undertake. By contrast, this study has made use of over a dozen arcHIVal collections around the country, many of which researchers have never used before, to tell the story of how tennis went from an amateur sport closely guarded by economic elitists and cultural purists to a professional sport thoroughly …

The athletes often suspect symptoms of concussions but then do not connect them to the injury concussion itself. Personal and external factors play a role in their decision making. This study looked at the St. John Fisher athletes and their decision making process on whether they report or not. The study included six football athletes and two non-football athletes, including a basketball and soccer athlete. The researcher found that athletes chose to play through their injuries and that the biggest factor …

Sport, Twitter Hashtags And The Public Sphere, Brendan O'Hallarn Oct 2016

Sport, Twitter Hashtags And The Public Sphere, Brendan O'Hallarn

Human Movement Studies & Special Education Theses & Dissertations

Sport and social media researchers have been challenged to go beyond simply analyzing the content of public social media posts, and to incorporate different critical frameworks to seek more meaningful findings about these relatively new online phenomena. This three-paper format dissertation attempts to frame interactions through sport-themed Twitter hashtags sociologically by incorporating a critical theory rarely deployed in the study of sport—the public sphere. In paper one, the study introduces a theoretical model which suggests sport consumption patterns and the unique architecture of Twitter can promote public sphere-like discourse in hashtags connected to sport. The model suggests amplifiers and barriers …
