Characteristics Of The Work Of Leading Authors Of The Accounting Review, 1926-1945, Robert James Fleming, Samuel P. Graci, Joel E. Thompson

Accounting Historians Journal

The Accounting Review has changed dramatically over the years. The purpose of this study is to document these changes, putting into perspective the articles that are currently published in The Accounting Review. In particular, this study compares the work of those authors who had the most publications in The Accounting Review (Leading Authors) during 1926-1945 with more recent contributions. The results with respect to topic of articles, research methods, citations, and article length reflect the Leading Authors' practical orientation, an attribute that is not particularly apparent in the work of current authors.

The Generalizability Of The Hidden Investment Hypothesis In Leading Japanese Corporations, Mitsuru Wakabayashi, George Graen, Mary Uhl-Bien Jan 1990

The Generalizability Of The Hidden Investment Hypothesis In Leading Japanese Corporations, Mitsuru Wakabayashi, George Graen, Mary Uhl-Bien

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

The present study tests the generalizability of the hidden investment hypothesis (Wakabayashi, Graen, Graen, & Graen, 1988) for Japanese management systems. The hidden investment hypothesis was derived from a 13-year longitudinal study of the career progress of a cohort of 85 college graduates who joined a single Japanese company in the same year, and states that the higher the quality of the vertical exchange relationship between a manager and supervisor, the greater the career progress of that manager. To test for the generalizability of the hidden investment hypothesis, 1,075 line managers at four different hierarchical levels were sampled from five …

Inconsistencies And Turnover, Lori A. Strawhun Jan 1990

Inconsistencies And Turnover, Lori A. Strawhun

Theses

In any organization, turnover is inevitable - employees come and employees go. A great deal of research has been devoted to exploring the causes of turnover as well as turnover's costs and benefits. There is much to say about turnover. It is a complicated phenomenon affected by many variables and having many effects itself.

To better- understand turnover, several formulas have been created to quantify this phenomenon in terms of percentages. These formulas are presented and one formula was used to examine a company referred to in this text as "Company X". There is little agreement on how much turnover …

Designing And Implementing Participative Management Within The Corporate Sector: A Primer, Robert R. Appel

Theses

The focus of this thesis is the study of participative management, in particular the use of quality circles in the corporate sector. After thoroughly researching the information available on quality circles t here will be developed a manual to be utilized to provide information to the managers and potential circle members of a company preparing to implement quality circles.

After a …

The Benefits And Detriments Of Beer: Health And Economic Impact, James M. Rice Jan 1990

The Benefits And Detriments Of Beer: Health And Economic Impact, James M. Rice

Theses

This thesis will focus on studies which have been conducted showing both the benefits and detriments of beer to health. Further, illegal drugs and beer will be compared, regarding economic impact and effect on users.

In recent years, the beer industry has been attacked by the media and other elements of society. It is considered a detriment to health by some. The negative media attention in recent years has given the beer industry and its products a bad image. Further, in the last 24 months, efforts have been made by supporters of the anti-alcohol movement to equate beer with illegal …

Teaching Accounting Concepts Versus Applications: An Analysis Of Student Attitudes, Marshall A. Geiger Jan 1990

Teaching Accounting Concepts Versus Applications: An Analysis Of Student Attitudes, Marshall A. Geiger

Accounting Faculty Publications

Accounting faculty have long debated the usefulness and appropriateness of their teaching endeavor. One of the central themes in this continuing discussion is that of teaching concepts versus teaching applications of current accounting principles. In order to empirically address this issue, students' attitudes toward the conceptual aspects and toward the practical application aspects of financial accounting were assessed. This research also reports on the development and validation of an instrument that measures attitudes of students toward these aspects of financial accounting. The instrument demonstrated high reliability with both intermediate and introductory students. Intermediate students were found to distinguish between attitudes …

A Descriptive Study Of Preparation For A Career In Health Club Management, Richard Emmett Hasty

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study was designed to describe the most important tasks being carried out in the operation of commercial health clubs, and also tasks for which health club managers perceive a deficiency in their preparation. A survey was designed and mailed to all (106) health clubs throughout Illinois, Iowa, and Minnesota that were members of the International Physical Fitness Association. Subjects were asked to indicate the degree of emphasis that selected tasks receive within their health clubs, and also their perception of the training they received to perform the tasks. Data collection occurred over approximately an eight week period. The overall …

Complex Organisations: Export Promotion In India, S Shiva Ramu Dec 1989

Complex Organisations: Export Promotion In India, S Shiva Ramu

IIMB Management Review

There are several organizations that are involved in export promotion in India. These organizations are inter-organizational in nature. Very few theories have been developed to explain the structure and the behaviour of such inter-organizations. Some of the theories have tried to explain the behaviour of inter-organizations through their formalised relations, intensity, reciprocity and exchange transactions. Most of them use either open system theory or social system or contingency theories (Negandhi 1980). Most of these theories explain the relationship between the organization and the environment. Attempts have also been made to classify different organizations. Existing theories of organization have neglected the …

Human Resource Management: A Review With Applications To Agriculture, Wayne H. Howard, Kenneth A. Mcewan Dec 1989

Human Resource Management: A Review With Applications To Agriculture, Wayne H. Howard, Kenneth A. Mcewan

Agribusiness

For years the major management concern of farm managers was farm production. In the 1970s and 1980s, the importance of finance and marketing emerged as two additional critical success factors in production agriculture. A fourth management area of growing importance to successful farming is managing labor (Thomas and Erven 1989). Total employment in farming has been steadily decreasing to less than 4% of Canada's labor force in 1984 from close to 20% in 1950 (Agriculture Canada 1984). However, the labor remaining in agriculture has been changing structure, with a greater proportion of hired labor. Hired labor accounted for 30% of …
